Washing Machines Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of washing machine would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.
So far so good, three months in and it's been great
My previous front loader - the Fisher and Paykel WH8560 didn't last four years - twice during this time it put black, greasy marks on clothes and sheets and also shredded some clothes. The service people were terrific and fortunately I had taken out the extra warranty with Product Care at Harvey Norman, but bottom line was it didn't do what it was supposed to do. It also had a very annoying habit of thinking for itself and a wash which had any quilting, padding etc (like pillow protectors, mattress protectors etc) could take half a day for one ...load - to the point where I'd pull it out sopping wet and take it to my dad's washing machine to spin dry. So I didn't want to get another Fisher and Paykel, but I couldn't afford a Miele. After much research we settled on the BoschWAW284420AU because it was made in Germany - a lot of the other Bosch models are made in China, because it had the option to add a garment, because it was on sale at Harvey Norman (we purchased it for around $1,400), because you can programme ahead to wash and because it had a good name. After nearly three months I can say I am happy with it. Bizarrely the drum isn't as big as the F&P even though it's supposed to be 9kg and the other was 8.5kg. This is annoying for when I wash the towels, but I've worked out a way around it. I put as many towels in as I can and then start the load. After it's been going a few minutes and wet everything I press to add a garment, and add the extra towel(s). What I don't like about it is that the F&P had a delayed start of five or fifteen minutes, then in hourly increments, but the Bosch starts at an hour. I used to like to delay for fifteen minutes, so I could have a shower and then it would start without me having to come out and do it. Or when I had added a stain removal spray. But I do like that it heats its own hot water so that it doesn't interrupt the water when you are showering. Also it is extremely sturdy. Reviews I have read say that it is quiet, however I actually thought the F&P was quieter. Not that it's overly noisy, but you can hear it when it's on. It seems to spin dry well and the towels come out softer than the F&P. It has two short washes - 15 minutes and 30 minutes.
