Breville Dual Boiler with Smart Grinder BES920 / BCG820 has been replaced by Breville Dynamic Duo BEP920.
Bad coffee 3 months into use.
Bought expresso maker from BingLee in April. Coffee was good at first. After 2 months, each cup of expresso gradually become twice as big, and thin. I tried different brands of coffee beans, grinds size, volume. Non seems to work.
I rang Breville 10 times over 3 days, listening to 'Your call is important to us...' for up to 10 minutes each, before I surrendered and left my phone number. Nobody seem to be care enough to call back for an discussion.

machine stopped working just outside of warranty
Very disappointed. This machine was great, when it worked, up until a few months out of warranty. Now I have a $1200+ machine that is unusable, and i have to pay to get it fixed. Paying this much for a machine to last a couple of years is absurd, the quality should be much better than that but there are so many people posting stories of similar issues with this machine, Breville clearly have some quality issues to address. Will be getting the repair quoted and going to ACCC if i have to, to ensure that Breville cover the repair costs of their faulty product. Have also had quality issues with other Breville appliances, this is the last straw and i will NOT be buying Breville again.

Easy to use, difficult to master....
Hmmm ok, where do I start.
First up, i'm no trained coffee expert.
I bought this as an amateur due to its manual nature, and good reviews online, generally. Its a learning device I can use every day and its not in the few thousands and up price range as I've found espresso machines can be. I wanted to learn to make good coffee, but not have to pay stupid amounts. Actually really good coffee, not just accepted morning caffeine.
The main obstacles I see in using this product will be inexperienced people who don't use the right coffee, and don'...t have a clear idea of what they're trying to achieve. Its a manual device, with some automation / standard settings for shot temp, pre-infuse time and shot length. All are customisable through the digital display on the front and its associated buttons. There is a manual shot button along with a single and double shot, all customisable as stated.

Highly capable and reasonably idiot-proof
Bought this machine to replace a Sunbeam which shuffled off its heating coil... See what I did there?
This machine, for a mainstream consumer brand, produces amazing coffee if you know how to whisper to it sweetly. The manual, accessories and promotional materials that come with the machine all focus on consistency as being the key to producing great espresso; with which I do not disagree. It uses a commercial sized (58mm) group head & portafilter, as well as dual boilers which enable simultaneous espresso extraction & milk texturing. Increment...

5 years later mostly Good but some Downsides
Purchased August 2014 when we previously owned small biz cafe with a commercial triple group head machine. Being full time baristas we wanted "real" coffee at home (not pod!) & Breville was arguably the best balance between cost & semi auto prosumer functionality. After 5 years ownership it's mostly positive experience - slower than commercial machine but does good job of extraction & decent microfoam (if you have right technique), easy enough to clean & descale, holds temperature, aesthetically pleasing, ideally paired with Smartgrinder (origi...nally had Delonghi grinder but not fine enough even after hacking). Downsides the consumable carbon water filters are expensive & hard to find as very few stores carry them. Group head seal wore quickly requiring multiple replacements until Breville instructed us to have modified assembly replaced at our cost out of warranty. Would have been nice to get design right initially or offer some manufacturer support for infield fix but suppose that's the risk of being an early adopter. Still going today so only one blemish (albeit ~$400 mod!) on a long term caffeine love affair.
Purchased in August 2014 at JB Hi-Fi for $1,400.00.
Love the versatility of this machine. It makes great coffee and is easily adjust to make coffee to everyone's taste. I love the fact that I can make coffee and texturise milk at the same time.

Breville Coffee machines - My experience
This is a review of both 920 and 820 machines.
Over many years we have purchased and used a variety of different coffee machines (none that included a built in grinder).
After our last machine failed we researched and purchased both these Breville ma
Dail your coffee grind
I bought an 820 and used it only for a week and the grinder failed. Breville replaced it without a problem and the second one has been grinding away for a month or two and I really like it. It has its own timer so you don't have to stand with your finger on the button while it grinds. I like the different settings for the grade of grind. I do find some ground coffee under the container when I use it but not a major problem. I haven't used the single or double grind feature. As I often have a second cup during the day I always use the container

Clumpy grinds - awful grinder
Bought the dynamic duo and spent about a week trying to get a decent grind out of this grinder. The clumping and channeling the grinder caused was appalling. So much so I took the grinder back (particularly as it was making strange noises). I got another which wasn’t much better which I sold on eBay in disgust! My 9 year old sunbeam grinder out performed this every time. Now happy with a proper grinder (macap).

Love this coffee machine
Great machine... I’m pretty fussy with my coffee and after watching a couple of online videos and tweaking my settings this is producing coffee just as good as my favourite coffee shop. And I got it at a great price before it was replaced by the latest model, so great value too.

A great coffee machine three years later
I bought this coffee machine back in March 2016 and to tell you the truth, it hasn't missed a beat. The unit is easy to clean though descaling has been a little tricky on a few occasions but in the end it all worked out.
The coffee still extracts to a consistent standard. I only perform double shots with this unit with fresh (under 2 week roast) coffee. The group head after three years still doesn't leak, amazing. I have had two Sunbeam 6900 series, the 6900 had issues though the 6910 was a lot better. The tech between the two is very wide tho...ugh. You will consistently get great shots and the steamer does a good job utilising a separate boiler for frothing milk. The boiler unit of this machine is a lot quieter than the thermal blocks of the Sunbeam. The only slight leak I can just barely hear is the steam wand and this is usually during cool down though a quick open and close stops the leak. Near three years on, I can see this coffee machine lasting another three years.

Good machine. Great value. Owner message re descaling included in this review.
The 920 is a good machine. Good coffee.
When you go to descale it, when you search for info, make sure you’re aware of what generation software your machine has. I didn’t know there were different generations, and ours is a 3rd generation machine. The descaling process is different for each generation and the initial instructions I got from the web didn’t identify they were for a specific generation. I suspect the product manual that you get on a search is for a first generation machine. Descaling is tricky and it seems to cause many peop...le angst. Final word on descaling - to get rid of the “descale me” indicator - hold down 1 cup button, then press power to get to advance menu and landing on “rset”. Then press menu to get to “hrd3”. Press menu. Machine will then heat up and descale indicator will be gone.
Great grinder but be careful
Great grinder, extremely easy to clean. However, it does take time to master the skill of knowing the exact coarse or fine levels for the coffee. Every coffee is different so do not get angry when your coffee is running too fast. The coffee machine used is also Breville and it is also brilliant. Makes me feel like I have a cafe at home.
This coffee grinder is so easy to use. Easy to read display. Good instruction book, with table setting out grind settings for different brewing methods, i.e. Espresso, percolator, plunger, etc. Can grind direct to coffee filter basket or supplied container. Jagged it on special at Myers and couldn't be happier.
I've had this grounder now for a year and I love it. It grinds both very finely and very coarse - so it's great for whichever coffee you prefer really. It doesn't make a lot of noise and it grinds the coffee quick. Highly recommended - I couldn't live without it now.
Saved myself some $$$
One of my best purchases! Rather than spending money to buy coffee on the to work, I just make some before I go. I love this coffee machine. Just make sure you get good quality beans and make sure to play around with settings (plenty on youtube) to get the best result.
The digital settings are easy to use, I normally use it for pourover and aeropress but produces fine enough coffee for espresso and cleaning is real easy. It even has ability to tighten the burrs if they loosen to produce finer grind. Good entry level grinder without hurting the pocket.
Makes great coffee
Purchased 2014 has been trouble free and makes great coffee , reliable model and does have inbuilt reminders to clean and replace filters. Have the Cranberry Coloured model and it delivers a product comparable to a commercial coffee machine , steam generator boiler is not as quick but good enough for home use and when making multiple cups for a group , it doesnt give up or slow down , quite consistent in delivery , as the internals are obviously well designed and built to last .

Took time to get it right
I had to try so many brands of coffee to get the one I liked best so that was a very expensive start. I am still trying to get the best dark chocolate powder. At first I was making coffee in mugs and it was watery but since I started making it in a cup I have the perfect strength as I also use the two cup filter basket. I love that I can make the coffee and froth the milk at the same time. I couldn't do that with my previous machine and had trouble with temperatures now I get the perfect cup. I do use lactose free skim milk usually but the regu...lar milk works just as well. The froth on the top is lovely and firm and I must have almost paid for the machine already after usually having 3 cups a day. It tells me when to clean and when to change the filter and both are just so easy to do.
Questions & Answers
I have a BSS920 about 3 years old and am having a problem with descaling. Have descaled previously with no problems.
Following the manual instructions I empty the boilers and next step is to begin Descale, press 1 cup button to begin to descale and figures 20 (for seconds) show in screen) and press 1cup button. However nothing appears in the screen and nothing happens.
Anyone have a solution?
Breville should have a solution
I complete a descale on my BES920 and the Descale Message remains on. Has been occuring for last 18 months or so. I descale every 2 to 3 months but no change
Hey Paul, apologies if you've tried this but maybe reset your hardness setting. With machine off, hold down 1 cup button and turn on. reset should appear on display, hit menu to select and then set your hardness.
Machine only heating to 72° then hovers around that temperature, have checked that the setting is still at 93° , tried unplugging for 60 minutes (as says somewhere in manual) .
Obviously can’t make a coffee at this temperature.
Any ideas please?
