Great barista quality for around $1k
I’ve owned two of these. The first I had 4 years - purchased as a factory second. It had a slight leak, which could have been fixed but give I paid around $500 for it I decided best to get a new one.
I’ve also had the smart grinder that goes with it for about 4 years
Unless you have no coffee making skills there is no need to spend twice the cost of this on an Oracle.
It is very easy to use - and provided you grind the beans to a sensible grade (smart grinder makes this easy) and use at least 13gms of coffee you get a great shot each time.... Obviously you should use good freshly roasted beans To keep it tasting fresh I recommend descaling regularly (either using genuine tablets or citric acid), but also changing the group head filters around once a year. It will set you back about $20

Bad coffee 3 months into use.
Bought expresso maker from BingLee in April. Coffee was good at first. After 2 months, each cup of expresso gradually become twice as big, and thin. I tried different brands of coffee beans, grinds size, volume. Non seems to work.
I rang Breville 10 times over 3 days, listening to 'Your call is important to us...' for up to 10 minutes each, before I surrendered and left my phone number. Nobody seem to be care enough to call back for an discussion.

Great machine, even after 4 years.
I've used this machine plus the associated grinder on a daily basis for a full 4 years. The counter indicates 4800 shots pulled (to see this hold 1 cup and 2 cup buttons for a few seconds, then power on, when you see 00:00, press menu, then multiply the number by 10). There have been no defects or leaks whatsoever. The only small niggle is the "descale me" message that remains even after you've done the descaling. This is a well known firmware issue. I didn't bother getting a firmware update, it's easy to work around (get into the maintenance m...enu as above, when you see 00:00 scroll until you see r3s5t and press the 1 cup button). Regarding the descaling process itself: I find this to be clearly described in the manual and had no problems following it. This machine enables me to produce barista quality coffees, and it has been consistent during these 4 years. I can fully recommend it to anyone looking for a non commercial machine that allows for a commercial level of settings to experiment with.

machine stopped working just outside of warranty
Very disappointed. This machine was great, when it worked, up until a few months out of warranty. Now I have a $1200+ machine that is unusable, and i have to pay to get it fixed. Paying this much for a machine to last a couple of years is absurd, the quality should be much better than that but there are so many people posting stories of similar issues with this machine, Breville clearly have some quality issues to address. Will be getting the repair quoted and going to ACCC if i have to, to ensure that Breville cover the repair costs of their faulty product. Have also had quality issues with other Breville appliances, this is the last straw and i will NOT be buying Breville again.

I brought this machine as a clearance model(bes920) for $999, they’re now bep920, the difference is they’ve gone from 1700watt up to 2100 watt, no biggie because I brought solely on the reviews for the older model.. I’ve had it a week And so far absolutely love every bit of this machine, heats up quick, makes great consistent coffee and the frother is better than I expected (that was important for me).. Can’t fault it and will give a update in due time.

I've had this for a couple of years now I think, never misses a beat, primarily used to grind to make cold brew. I probably use it once every month or two and it faithfully works every time.
So, why review now? Well, I was looking up this to recommend for a friend and thought I best also contribute as a long time owner as I use this site a lot myself when looking to buy appliances.

Awesome machine, perfect cup
I bought the BES920 and Smart Grinder 3 years ago and it hasn’t missed a beat. It took a bit of playing with the grinder to get the best combination of time and grind for a great cup. It is probably due for a service as a couple of washers appear to have been worn, however after a few thousand cups of coffee, it is a total bargain. Having a dual boiler is great, I had a single boiler Delonghi model before this, and frankly it was crap. I can not recommend this high enough, it’s a bargain.

Great machine, excellent backup
I have had this machine for two years. It has given reliable service and has delivered consistently good shots. I have cyclists in the family - they drink triple shot macchiatoes. I prefer latte. All of us love the coffee. Customer service responded extremely well to my recent request to have the firmware reset after descaling.

Had been using a cheap grinder for coffee for 2 weeks. Always get inconsistent in grind size and poor extraction. So decided to get one of this grinder after research. So after using this grinder, my extraction is way more crema on top and tastes a lot better! Best buy

A Real Statement in Home Coffee Grinders
After purchasing a home coffee machine, it quickly became apparent that if I was serious about getting the best out of my new machine, I would need to be able to grind coffee beans. After my usual research, I chose the Breville BCG820BSS Coffee Grinder.
Breville have done their homework. The machine caters for all coffee types, espresso, filter, plunger (French press) and cold press. And in this capacity, the machine will take small to large group handles, a filter basket (from your filtered coffee machine), or an impressively designed airtigh...t jar that is included in the package. The group handles have an option of two cradles, magnetically held, depending on the size handle being used. There is a removeable bottom tray also held by a magnet. The hopper takes more beans than is required but would hold near to half a kilo. (I only dispense what I need for the day and keep the bulk sealed in its bag to maintain freshness.) The locking feature of the hopper ensures safety - the machine will not operate without it being locked in place. This protects access to the grinding burrs. When unlocked, the hopper may be removed without spilling any beans from the bottom. There is an air-tight lid which probably affords some contribution to maintaining bean freshness, and the lid also has a pull-ring to help remove the lid - a nice thought. The machine will allow activation by the group handle pressing a button at the back of the dispensing area. In dispensing ground coffee, I initially weighed the group handle before and after. A barista taught me that consistent weight is one step towards getting perfect coffee. Compared to many other grinders, the Breville is reasonably quiet. But don’t expect whisper quietness. Remember, we are grinding coffee beans.
WOW ... love this machine.
Just returned the second Sunbeam EM7100 within a week as neither of them produced enough steam power to produce micro foam, they only heated the milk, terribly underpowered, to get half decent espresso required a lot of fiddling with the settings. The Good Guys had this beauty marked down to $485.00. Straight out of the box it made a near perfect Latte macchiato without even trying, beautiful rich micro foam in under 20 secs, perfect temperature, rich espresso fabulous machine for a home domestic appliance. Highly recommend this machine if your not a coffee snob and just love a good coffee.

This machine replaced my Oracle Touch and it was the best purchase I have made. It is consistent in the grinding and the draw of the coffee is perfect. You need to make sure that you put in good coffee - the rule is rubbish in rubbish out and that is true. Fresh beans grind perfectly and the after using a professional machine this machine is perfect.

Well after two years down the track and using the Breville BCG820BSS every day I thought it was about time to put pen to paper and write down my thoughts about this product. The unit was well packed and complete with all fittings, easy to assemble the last couple of parts that are separated for packing purposes & in a short period of time I was able to attempt my first grind. I can't tell you how much I love this machine!
This machine is a game changer. Well, for me it has been. For several years, I owned a pod machine. I had always side-eyed the Dual Boiler, but the initial cost stopped me from purchasing. In hindsight, it might have been a better deal, given the price of pods.
Fast forward to May this year, my pod machine was playing up and hubby insisted we look at another machine. I almost bought another pod machine, but one afternoon we were walking through Harvey Norman, and I side-eyed the Dual Boiler. Again. And this time I couldn’t resist. The Duo dua...l boiler came with the Smart Grinder, and two kgs of free coffee. All for $1089. I did consider the Breville Barista, but had read several reviews where the grinder failed and overall, people appeared happier with the Duo. I’m so glad I bought this machine! No more pods (I felt terrible as they ended up in landfill) and since May, I have had fun playing with different coffee beans. I can’t have dairy and use soy milk. The soy milk turns out perfect every time. I love that I can have ‘hot’ milk – you are in control of the temperature. I can’t remember the amount of times I ordered coffee at a café and the milk was lukewarm. Not anymore! It look a little bit to figure out the grind size and timing, but now I have it sorted, I have perfect coffee every time. Here’s what I love most about this machine: - Quick heat up. In 90 seconds my machine is ready to go! - I can make two cups of expresso coffee at once. Perfect for when the family drop by - The water tank is huge! I can go a couple of days without needing to fill it back up. There’s a filter in the tank, which means you can use tap water with confidence. - I can programme all my favourite coffee types with the touch of a button.

Questions & Answers
I have a BSS920 about 3 years old and am having a problem with descaling. Have descaled previously with no problems.
Following the manual instructions I empty the boilers and next step is to begin Descale, press 1 cup button to begin to descale and figures 20 (for seconds) show in screen) and press 1cup button. However nothing appears in the screen and nothing happens.
Anyone have a solution?

I complete a descale on my BES920 and the Descale Message remains on. Has been occuring for last 18 months or so. I descale every 2 to 3 months but no change
Hey Paul, apologies if you've tried this but maybe reset your hardness setting. With machine off, hold down 1 cup button and turn on. reset should appear on display, hit menu to select and then set your hardness.
Machine only heating to 72° then hovers around that temperature, have checked that the setting is still at 93° , tried unplugging for 60 minutes (as says somewhere in manual) .
Obviously can’t make a coffee at this temperature.
Any ideas please?
