Nice style, junk quality
Had this $169 toaster for just over 2 years, not used every day of the week but is now dead. Literally died in a flash, tripped the house safety switch and again when checking whether it still worked. Was a good unit while it worked, but clearly from our experience and other reviews there is a fundamental flaw with the quality of electrical components used and therefore a safety issue.
If we had bought a $9 Kmart or BigW toaster then just over 2 years occasional use would be fair, at almost 20 times the price it's unacceptable, particularly with no service parts available from the maker. In a house where we also have a Breville kettle, sandwich press, blender etc sadly we will not buy Breville again.

A friend has had a 2 slice version of this toaster for about 2 years & said how happy she was with it. Each time we visited her, we were impressed by the smooth operation of the motorised lift/lower mechanism & the premium look, feel & even/consistency of browning of the toaster.
When our old Sunbeam toaster started to play up recently, we needed no more excuses to buy the 4 slice version of the Breville Smart Toaster. We have only had the toaster for a few weeks, so cannot comment on long term reliability. I can say that the build quality ap...pears to be good, especially the cast metal body & quality feel of the buttons & sliders. Toasting is a bit slower than our old toaster, but we haven't had a single burnt slice, I guess due to better control of the heating elements? We use thick cut toast & the very large, wide slots & slice centering guides make for very consistent, even browning. Frozen bread doesn't require any changes in browning settings, just a press of the 'Frozen' button, works perfectly! Haven't had to use the 'Lift & Look' feature much, as the browning is so consistent. So far we haven't had any sticking or jamming, though we are careful to remove any crumbs from the crumb trays & we shake any other crumbs out of the toaster by shaking it upside down, after every few days of use. Only time will tell if the toaster continues to perform to expectations, but so far so good. Pleased with the purchase.
Great looking toaster but ......
Purchased this in Jan 2019 and we have been pleased with it. Unfortunately, the element on one side of my toaster have stopped working altogether. We only use the toaster mainly on weekends, maybe that's why mine has lasted 15 months. Looking at the other reviews, the toaster doesn't appear to last beyond 18 months so the one year warranty is pretty useless. Disappointing that Breville hasn't come on line to address customers' issues. Sad that so many appliances don't last long these days nor can be fixed - what hope is there to reduce waste?
Nice toaster but broken twice
Sadly our toasters keep breaking! Our first one stopped popping up and we're now on our second and one side has stopped working. Really disappointing because it's a nice toaster, looks great and toasts well but too many faults especially for the price. Luckily we got an extended warranty!

Best toaster we have had in 40 years, versatile and easy to use
We bought this toast in December 2018 as I wanted a toaster that could do tings like crumpets and fruit toast properly. We weren't disappointed. The toaster is easy to use, and as really useful settings for things like frozen bread, crumpets and fruit toast. We use it every day. Each half of the 4 slide toaster can be set separately so we can do things like have crumpets on one half and fruit bread in the other and get perfect results.
very intermittent toaster !!
Have had mine about 2 years - one side drops out regularly - best keep them very keen - no crumbs inside or they jam up - toast ok - but I would not buy another one
Purchased in June 2017.
It's Toastin !
Three years on and this toaster is quite the best I have owned , perhaps not as lovable as my 40 year old Sunbeam Automatic popup but it's close .
Consistent performance and reliability makes for an unfussed morning departure .
Basic maintenance is vital , the crumb tray is a little small and needs cleaning often . Tipping the unit upside down is also required , especially when toasting crumbly breads and Hot Cross Buns .
I was asked to repair a Smeg toaster by a friend , the very flash and impressive case hid the cheapest of internals imag...

Not So Creme de la Creme of Toasters
Well, I am amending my review.
As I said I would if this thing failed.
I have also downgraded the rating from 5 to 3 star
Well its been a month or two and the first failure was the Fruit bread setting.
The blue button no longer lights up so this is going back to the retailer .
The comments below are my initial impressions and I removed a couple of paragraphs...Toasters really do get a bagging on reviews, mostly from breakdowns and malfunctions or uneven toasting . I had replaced my Sunbeam Cafe series with another Sunbeam which I returned and you can see my review on that one. This toaster is not immuned to those one star reviews , however as most were on wear and tear and failure I have not had this long enough to comment. I will however comment on what this is supposed to do and that is to toast. The toaster itself is diecast with brushed aluminium fully auto button press . An impressive looking beast but does it toast? Well , yes it does and it does it more evenly than any toaster I have ever owned . Put your toast in and make your selection and away you go. Big fat Artisan breads can also be used in this toaster and it also has a fruit bread setting and a crumpet setting which allows you to just leave your heat setting where you left it and the toaster does the rest . A double press of the crumpet button brings up the blue light for fruit bread . Average time is one minute to over 2 minutes depending on what you are toasting. Many people can't figure out why there is a 5 setting on this . The reason is this setting is for dense Artisan breads not your airy fairy commercial supermarket style offerings which will get burnt to a crisp. All toasting in my tests were even to within about 90% on my reckoning and I just left my setting on 1.8 plenty high enough for me. . Refer to my photos where I show both sides and also a fruit bread result with and without the blue button press. You can see that those presets do make a difference it's just not a gimmick.
Toasts well while it works
Whoever the Industrial Designer of this toaster was got the builtin obsolescence bang on. First one stopped toasting on one side after 23months. Replacement one had the same issue after 9months. It's not a cheap toaster so should be made with much better internal components and materials.
Great quality 4 slice toaster
I purchased the Breville Smart Toaster just over 12 months ago due to my son having had his for a few years with problem free toasting.
Unfortunately without warning my toaster stopped working. I contacted Harvey Norman where the item was purchased from and it was replaced without hesitation, staff commented they usually have no problems with this toaster. Unfortunately my lovely Charcoal colour is discontinued and was offered any other type however settled on timeless Chrome. I could have chosen another brand but this toaster has toasted ...

A+ for cool factor but not practical
Pretty cool and doesn't throw your toast up halfway to space but there are problems with it. Some items get stuck on the way up and it's very difficult to clear. Far too expensive.
If you have this toaster - watch for fires.
The toaster was great for a little while, I've had this for around 9 months. Tonight it caught fire, not within any crumbs but the insulation at the top where no crumbs even go.
I was very lucky to be watching it cook while I had a pan on the stove next to it, noticed for about 20seconds one side of the toasters element wasn't lit and a little spark at the top which I thought was maybe the element trying to light - kept watching and it appeared to light and then went out- then started a tiny fizzle of fire. I quickly popped the toaster and th...e flame extinguished on its own, but has left a little hole. I've unplugged and will be taking it back to JB Hifi this week. Pretty disappointed considering the cost and that I purchased the matching kettle. My previous breville toaster lasted me 10 years. I will be finding another toaster and brand after reading another reviewer's comment that it's happened to hers on multiple occasions.
Quality toaster, but is it worth the price?
Good quality toaster but not convinced that it's worth spending so much to get all the bells and whistles. A simpler and cheaper toaster will toast just the same as long as you are prepared to learn the settings, which you have to do with this one anyway. I have used this many times over the three weeks I have had it and tested it with bread, bagels, crumpets/raisin loaf and English muffins.
For me, the most valuable option has been the crumpet/fruit bread button which toasts less on one side than the other. Works well with bagels and Engl...
Finally a toaster than toasts crumpets
Best toaster I have ever used. Toasts crumpets too perfection. Love the look and see option , plus the 'bit more ' feature is handy. Looks good in kitchen with chrome.Highly recommend this toaster.

Been using this toaster multiple times a day for nearly three months. We love it and have had no issues. Love being able to do four slices at once and have different toast settings for each person. Toasts evenly. The crumpet button is cool. I also like the lift and look/toast more buttons. Very handy and you don't risk burning the toast. It makes a cute noise when the toast is done. The toast doesn't pop up but lowers and rises slowly. It's easy to clean and looks good.
Great but unreliable
I have had my toaster for 3 years and LOVE it. It has toasted the best I have ever had. Of course for the price so it should. I love the motorised part, brrrr down, brrrr up, beep. Can toast crumpets, raisin toast all perfectly at the press of a button. Until it GIVES UP. FzzzTTT and Flash and it's gone. Don't bother about trying to get it fixed, Breville don't have any parts for the Authorised service peeps who I went to see. If you buy it get the extra warranty but it probably wont last that long. Keep making Breville replace your toaster bec...ause of their lousy, rubbish, terrible, aweful, (they wont let me swear) service, warranty and unreliability. For 169$ it did everything brilliantly, it even expired in a flash of brilliance . Tripped the house circuit breaker too. Sweet and sour product. PS The store I bought it from rejected my reviews so I guess they don't want to rock the boat.

Great toaster when it works
I had to exchange this toaster twice before I was satisfied, but even then the third toaster has had a hiccough. The first toaster didn't arrive in the best condition, so I changed it over for a replacement, but after a week the second toaster failed when the mechanism which clamps the bread, when lowering and raising the toast, stopped working. So I had it replaced a second time. The third toaster was working fine for about 2 weeks, when it went on the blink (literally) all the lights would blink simultaneously, and the toaster wouldn't work a...t all (as has been reported on many review sites for this model toaster). I tried power resetting it a few times, and also tried several button combinations, but nothing worked. So I listened carefully to the toaster as it was going through its start-up cycle, and realized it was probably the motorized lift mechanism that was stuck in a loop due to one of the sensors not being triggered, so I applied some gentle percussive maintenance which fixed the problem, and the toaster has been fine ever since (knock on wood). Having said this, the staff at Myer, both online and in store have been extremely helpful. OK. the third unit lasted about 5 months then the element stopped working. The motor and all the other buttons appeared to work, but the element would not heat up, so it failed to do the one thing a toaster must do..... toast. This time I returned it for a refund and have purchased a cheap toaster from Kmart for the interim. If the could fix their QC issues and the reliability I would purchase this toaster again as it did a great job while it worked. Is it too much to expect, a toaster which actually toasts well. By the way, the cheap Kmart toaster leaves the top quarter of each slice pretty much un-toasted which is a common problem I have struck, even with brand named toasters I have owned in the past.
Best toaster we've ever had - when it works.
We bought the BTA830 nearly two years ago, and from the first piece of toast it was clearly the best toaster we have had. We have simple requirements, just consistent and even toasting on both sides of the bread. The Breville does this perfectly.
After nearly two years, though, the toaster started playing up - with issues common to other purchasers as detailed on this and other review sites (1) the lights started to come on by themselves even though we were nowhere near the toaster and (2) the "lift and look" function failed.
So a quick ema...il to Breville and a trip to Bing Lee has got us a new (free) toaster under the two-year warranty - exactly the same model as the previous one. I've given this only a 4 star rating because I really think that a toaster should last more than a couple of years before failing, especially as this is a relatively premium-priced product. Having said that though, it has worked fantastically in all the time we have had it. ------- Update December 2018 - I've downgraded again to a 3 star rating because within a year the replacement model that we got from Bing Lee now only works on one of the two slots. Quality control on this appliance is clearly not all it should be. When it works, it's good. Unfortunately, I don't think that's good enough. ------
Purchased for A$150.00.
Questions & Answers
When you insert the crumpets into toaster and press the crumpet button twice the light blue turns to dark blue, what does this do, i tried it and it didn’t cook the front of my crumpet ??
The 'Crumpet' setting on the toaster directs more heat to the center heating elements, to brown the top of the crumpet & avoid burning the bottom. This is activated by pressing the crumpet button once, crumpet mode indicated by a white light. Pressing the button twice (indicated by a dark blue light around the switch) returns the setting to normal toasting, without the extra heat to the center heating elements. That is why your crumpet top was not browned.
Hope this helps.
Brand new toaster first time used and the lever won’t stay down.
Is it the smart toaster ie the bread is lowered electronically & not spring operated? If its brand new, ask for an exchange or a refund. Dont bother repairing it either way. The Smart toaster doesnt have a lever, hence the question. With mine the toast button got stuck in the 'On' position which eventually damaged the unit. If you can obtain a full refund, do so & purchase the KitchenAid 4 slice toaster. More expensive but far better product.
All lights flashing and toast will not lift
