Cant get an answer
The company cannot establish if you are covered without proceeding with a full claim with claim managers only available in the week. This caused significant distress following a family death trying to understand the best course of action at a difficult time. I would never insure with them again and will be changing health insurer also as a result

I will never use BUPA!
I usually use BUPA when I travel overseas but last year when I tried to make a claim due to the fact my flight was delayed by 15hrs which meant I lost 1-day accommodation & my car transfer was missed to due my flight. BUPA said I could not make that claim because it was a a technical issue with the airline. Is this not the reason why we buy travel insurance????

Misleading policy
My flight was delayed in Vietnam overnight for 18 + hours. I had to urgently get to Sydney and took another flight, thinking (based on the policy) I was covered for delayed travel. Some pages of the policy stated: “canceled or rescheduled travel” unlimited for singles. The fine print unfortunately meant that if the carrier has delayed due to engineering reasons, I wasn’t covered at all for the alternate flight I purchased. Also I had to chase up the CGU end of the operation to get any clarification, they weren’t overly proactive about getting in touch.

Disappointed to find out that BUPA Travel Insurance (CGU) was not able to cover my pre exisitng condition although I have not had problems doing so in the past either through BUPA or alternate travel insurers.

Hidden exclusions in travel insurance. I'm going back to RAA.
I took out domestic travel insurance. Our flight was cancelled at the last minute so we had to buy expensive last minute tickets to get there, but I had read the insurance PDS and had seen that on page 6 of the PDS, the Australian Plan covered us for cancelled or rescheduled planes and the amount was 'unlimited'. And also, a bit contradictorily, on page 17 it clearly stated "We will cover the reasonable costs of additional accommodation and travel expenses that result from you being delayed or interrupted." Immediately after this, it stated; "U...Read more
nder the Australian Plan we will pay up to $10,000 for Singles and $20,000 for Doubles." So I felt confident we could recover this additional expense just $170. I was wrong. Under the above information, after the PDS says "yes we will cover expenses from delayed or rescheduled flights", and "we'll pay up to $10,000 of expenses", was a list "oh but we won't cover it unless....your plane was hijacked, or crashed, or severe weather, or your travel companion died, or if you broke your 3rd toe in a helicopter accident on a Wednesday in May". Just searching the 68 page document for 'cancelled flights' was not enough. No. You need to read every single paragraph and even if the paragraph appears to end after saying how much they will cover and how huge the payout can be, they will then go on to explain exclusions. Many exclusions. And they are sometimes hidden under separate headings. It's not under Cancelled or Rescheduled Travel. It's not under Delayed or Interrupted Travel. It's under another heading "Additional Expenses" after the claim to cover all, up to 10,000 per single. Hidden. Very unclear. Devious even. Claim denied.3 comments

Very Poor
Currently going through a dispute process. It was to my surprise that the travel policy is not BUPA but unwritten by CGU. Dealing with the representatives was stressful, and it felt like the first instance was to reject a claim irrespective of the details and the circumstances. I only went with BUPA because I have Health Insurance with them. I shall be reviewing that policy now based on them washing their hands of the claim.

Incredibly poor experience with BUPA
Having had private cover with BUPA for over 15 years we took out travel insurance while on an extended break overseas to visit family. I had an unforseen health issue while overseas and when I returned attempted to lodge a claim. It was incredibly difficult to do so as when we went to BUPA they could not deal with it at the local office, as they said it was a wholesale policy. After spending 2 or 3 hours on phone calls explaining the issue they requested we go back to the doctor and specialist we had used overseas to verify the claim even thoug...Read more
h we provided receipts and a report from the specialist which gave complete details of the issue. We found their claims processor incredibly unhelpful and unfriendly. Going back to doctors and specialists overseas takes time and costs additional money even though we provided full details and a detailed report form the specialist when making the claim. I will never use BUPA again either for travel insurance or ongoing health insurance in Australia.1 comment

Total rip off!
It is only good as an accident policy, I was told this by one their customer consultants themselves! I was also told that even if the policy holder is not aware they have a certain condition, ALMOST ALL claims will be considered as pre existing...EVEN IF THE POLICY HOLDER IS UNAWARE OF THIS INFORMATION.
Beware of getting a visitor plus extras cover. It is absolutely useless.

Worst travel insurance
This is the worst travel insurance ever, do not use it as they do not help you when overseas... I was stuck in Tanzania pooing blood and they did nothing. I couldn’t contact their phone number, so I sent the info back to family in Australia and they submitted it on my behalf, we had to seek medical advice and get ourselves back to Australia. I am submitting my claim and they better pay up....I will be making a formal complaint to them. Wendy

Travel insurance that doesn't cover valuables while traveling
Bupa's travel insurance is worthless when it comes to claims. Their policy clearly mentions that electronic items are covered by their non-medical insurance: "14.1: If the policyholder has chosen the Non-Medical Option, the Company shall compensate the insured for the following items belonging to the insured on his/her travel outside his/her country of permanent residence: baggage,
electronic equipment, cash, tickets, credit cards, drivers license, securities and passports."
Yet when I tried to claim for my damaged camera, they have refused to compensate me.

I am an Expat Aussie, living in the USA. As I was returning to Australia for a temporary visit of 5 months I inquired whether you had a policy available for this purpose. A few responses and then left hanging. Was only trying to spend my money in Australia instead of the USA company I usually use.

Frustrated.
Existing Medical Conditions: I thought that i could and would be able to get Travel insurance from my health insurer Bupa however I was declined. So what does a person do these days. Have had a heart attack, 1stent inserted and have since been on medication to prevent this happening again this was 14 years ago. The expectation was that being a health insurer i would be able to obtain travel insurance. It is a Scammer
I bought a travel insurance for traveling overseas Jan 2017. The insurance policy was covering different things including Overseas Dental with $200 excess, I had an emergency situation with too much pain and had to fix it just to avoid pain to come back Australia, I claimed and they said we only pay for accidents or in some situation like someone punch in your face !!! why someone should punch in my face and I need to insure myself for punch? Í travelled almost 40 countries for wildlife photography which most of them are dangerous and never someone punched me. What do you mean?

Our overseas dental cover is designed to cover when a person suffers an unexpected incident which requires dental assistance - an example for this would be if you accidentally fall and damage your tooth. Bupa Travel Insurance - CGU
People please do not waste your time and money taking out travel insurance with Bupa c/o CGU. Our flights got cancelled less than 24hrs before departure (Tiger Air) due to the airline not meeting certain regulations... None the less, we had to then purchase other flights and fork out for extra accomodation as this had been booked and paid for to - as we ended up leaving two days later than planned.

Don't buy
Booked travel insurance for domestic travel. Agent went to jail for fraud after we had paid our deposit. We thought great we have insurance. BUT NO they wriggled and wormed their way out of paying for our lost deposit. Underwritten by CGU Insurance. Biggest waste of money save your money. Not very helpful at all. Would not go through them again. Took 6 months of fighting with them and taking it to the Odbudsman for them to wriggle out on a very hidden clause in the PDF.

If it's not a scam, I don't know what it is.
I paid around the $300 mark for travel insurance with Bupa. My partner (who is also covered) got sick on our holiday so we had to pay for the doctor's fees and medication fees. When I call to make a claim, turns out the excess is more than what the fees are combined. So what on earth am I paying travel insurance for? If it's not a scam, I don't know what is.

The default excess for our travel insurance is $200, and customers can choose to reduce or increase this excess to meet their needs (e.g. reduce to $100 or increase to $300 etc). Whether completing an application online or when purchasing a policy through our contact centre, changes to the excess will also change the premium amount of the policy. Absolutely disgusted that my mobile phone was not covered for being lost on public transport (taxi) but if I had of lied and said that someone stole it out of my bag on the beach it would of been covered ... What a disgrace for insurance companies not to cover this for families ...

Extremely Disappointed
Our flight was delayed leaving Siem Reap but leaving plenty of time for our connecting flight from Singapore. As we would miss this connecting flight we rang Bupa Travel Insurance for their assistance not once not twice but actually numerous occasions asking for their advice on what we should do. Not at any time of these many phone calls did any of the consultants mention that we would not be able to claim for the new airline tickets, accomodation, meals, transfers that we had to purchase. ng with our children so wanted to make sure if anything did go wrong we would be covered well. Once we arrived back into Australia we found that we could not claim for any of the expensed we incurred due to this delay which was due to the airline of "Operational Issues". The policy was not at all clear on what we could claim and what we could not. We were $4000.00 out of pocket and had to pay for new airline tickets where as we could have paid for changes to the current tickets we had but after speaking to Bupa Consultants they advised to wait to get to Singapore and get our flights soughted which by then we could not ammend our current tickets and we had to re purchase all new tickets. Extremely frustrating as we had called them numourous times over the course of our delay for advice as we didn't know what to do in this circumstance. All these calls are recorded so the Claims people know exactly what was advised and said to us. We could have been only $1800 out of pocket then and not $4000. Extremely disappointed as we were lead to believe that we would have a claim. I am sure all Insurances are the same but as Bupa was recommended we used it as we also have private medical insurance with them. Never again though1 comment

Terrible let-down and appalling outcome!
I will never use Bupa Travel Insurance again. Their emergency number didn't work from Morocco and they left me stranded and unhappy in a country far from home. Read the fine print and don't expect loyalty to amount to any understanding. I will never use Bupa again!

Do Not Use Bupa
When we travel we do not have return air tickets and are treated so badly.
We were in Bali and were stuck in Bali because of the volcano which had not erupted for many years I think and I had broken a tooth and we took the first plane out of Bali which was north as no planes were going to Australia. We ended in Bangkok. Thai air
I had to have 3 implants pulled out at a hospital. One broken and the other 2 infected.
As I have the highest Bupa insurance ex HBA customer it would have been cheaper to come home but I was in pain

I own a motorcycle over there.
Yes I have an Australian motorcycle licence and a Thai motorcycle licence and wear a helmet.

I need a policy that will cover private care because the public hospitals are bad
Even Thai people say they might die in public hospital system.
Just need peace of mind that if something happens I can get good emergency treatment at a private hospital

Hi Phil, It might be better to talk to BUPA themselves as our particular policy said that we weren't covered for quad bikes or motorcycles in Bali. They were great when we asked questions so hopefully you can give them your scenario and they will give you a direct answer.
