cheap and nasty $3 relocation trip - watch out for all the other fees they charge that add up
We relocated a van from Sydney to Melbourne a first for us...never again. The van was old and badly maintained also dirty and smelly. Staff at their office in Cairns have been unconcerned about my original review. In fact the person I spoke to on the phone greeted me by saying "whats up?" In the end this company has charged me $70 as a booking fee and their agent company Imoova, charged me another $25 for their booking fee. For a $1 per day hiring fee the total cost has skyrocketed. Add to that the caravan park powered sites fee $46 and $40 to ...keep the van charged it isn't as economical as first thought. Especially because the van was so old and run down. I saw cleaners smoking while getting vans ready. It's a shame this experience was ruined for us by an unprofessional group.
My Camperman Experience
I booked a CAMPERMAN van with toilet, 6 days before pickup. When I arrived to pick up the van at their Gold Coast agent it stood out from the rest of the vehicles as visually poorly maintained and unloved. I completed the visual inspection of the vehicle and disputed the tread on the rear tyres. They had it marked down as 8mm. We remeasured and the tread and it was 4mm at best. The agent said it was legal and probably good for another 10,000km. The interior of the van was dirty and smelt like a pub bar from the 70’s the morning after a big nigh...t. I then returned to the office to pay the balance of rental. At that stage the agent told me that the fuel tank was almost empty and that I would need to find the nearest petrol station before running out of fuel. After making the payment I was given the keys to the van. Given the state of the vehicle I decided to do a basic safety check - Indicators, brake lights and lights. That was as far as I got with the basic safety check. The brake lights didn’t work. The agent told me that he wouldn’t be able to do anything today and that I would need to return the next day after he had arranged for an auto-electrician to look at the vehicle. At that stage I said I was unwilling to accept the vehicle as it was un-roadworthy and I was not willing to wait another day. I asked for refund of the rental money, and was told that I could not get a refund. “I would need to take it up with CAMPERMAN.” I left being over $2,000 out of pocket and no campervan. I didn’t even get to start the engine. 4 months on, I have managed to recover the money via my credit card provider, for non-delivery of a service. That doesn’t mean it will be the last I will hear from Camperman as they are now claiming that I owe them $500, which I don’t. They have requested payment within 5 days, so I may have an update next week in the Camperman saga. Lessons learned: 1.Don’t rent from CAMPERMAN. 2.When you do the basic visual check, for a rental vehicle, ask for the keys at the same time so that you can also check the safety functions of the vehicle. Do this before you make any payments or sign a contract. 3.If a company doesn’t provide a service, register the dispute with your credit card provider ASAP. 4.If you want to rent a campervan go to KEA. At short notice I managed to rent a Mercedes Sprinter Motor-home with only 10,000km on the clock and because I only needed the vehicle for 5 days (not Camperman’s minimum 10 days) it worked out cheaper. Their service and support was brilliant and there were no hidden extras. 5.A friend suggested that I could have accepted the un-roadworthy vehicle and taken it straight to the Department of Motor Transport for inspection. If you don’t discover the problems until after accepting the vehicle, taking it to the Department of Motor Transport may be your best option. 6.There appears to be a pattern to CAMPERMAN reviews. About 1 week after a bad review 5 or so “Excellent” reviews are posted, all within a 2-3 day period.
Avoid this company!!! Rude people. Old and not reliable campervan. Bad equipement
I rent a camper van in last july from Cairns to Sydney with Camperman. What a mistake I did!!!
First of all during my first contact at Cairns I found that those people are very rude. I would have been OK if the Campervan was good. But it isn't.
The first campervan we had several issues. First the Tires were not in a good shape, almost slick there were only around 4 mm of grip (just above the legal limit), and I had to drive 3000 km... I was not confident at all an requested to change it. They refused and told me I can change it if I pay it.....
70dols post-rental fine
Got fined by camperman 2 months after the end of the rental. I wouldn't blame camperman if they had given me a notice from the police or any other proof, but they couldn't. Never again
Requested an online quote and booked a camper. Email response was that my booking would be confirmed by email. Got no confirmation after three days, so made alternative arrangements. Then found out that Camperman had charged my credit card. Camperman refused to refund me. Robbed!
The worst ever! Extreme rude! Terrible car.
Don't ever hire car from this company! The service is terrible. They hung up your phone when u talking to them. The camp car we hire has major problems and we wait more than 1 day for them to fix but still not fixed. They would not give u any compensation they just ask u to wait & wait on this cold night.
Would not rent from them again
We hired a campervan with shower and toilet from the Brisbane depot. We had been travelling for 15 hours from the UK so were very tired when we picked it up. The outside was covered in dents and scraps and looked awful. The inside was tatty and not very clean. Had we not been so tired and had any alternative we would not have accepted the vehicle. We found that the Satnav we hired for $90 would not hold any charge so that the moment we stopped it shut down, the maps were old so kept saying we were in a field when we were on the pacific hi...ghway and sent us on tortuous routes instead of a direct one. There was a leak from the window in the toilet compartment when it rained, the fly screens were broken, curtain missing clips, the leisure battery was so small that it was not sufficient to keep the fridge working for any time at all when we were parked up so our food went bad. We did a quick clean and tidied the van just before we took it back but were told that it had to be cleaned to a standard ready for the next group to take it or they would charge us $225! We were not told this when we originally took the van, obviously because the van was dirty when we got it. We have never hired a car or van where you have to clean it ready for the next hirer. We told the Airlie Beach drop off depot about all the problems with the van and the bad condition of the outside and were told that what did we expect for such a cheap campervan. We paid $199 AUD per day for two adults, is that cheap? I assume the people who had damaged the outside of the van had had their $500 deposits withheld but the van had never been fixed. All in all a tatty, badly designed, under equipped, under powered camper. Would never hired from them again.
We hired 3 vans over the Easter break from the Brisbane office and it was the worst thing we could have done. One van ran out of gas on the first day - not even 1/2 day into our trip, another ran out the next day. 2 had hardly any fuel when we picked them up, pillows well if that is what you can call them were horrible (no filling) fridges and vans not cleaned properly. They need to make sure all vans are full of fuel and gas before they leave the premises as well as thoroughly cleaned - our van had the details of the previous hirer still in the door panel with address, email address etc (not very private)
Convenience of being able to stay off road
Too many things to mention
Camperman Poor service
We hired a camperman camper and it was a problem right from the start, the electrics for the water pump / fridge / lighting never worked at all!! I pointed out the corroded terminals on the battery before we left and noted it on the check sheet, but they refused to fix it and claimed it would be OK. I have complained to Fair Trading NSW and Camperman still refused to acknowledge there was a problem. Would NEVER hire off them again.
I have travelled extensively and this is the first time I have had to complain about such poor service.
Power for Lights / Fridge and Water pump never worked.
Questions & Answers
How old are your campervans in average and with how many milage (paradise shower/ toilet)?
The vehicles are old with very high mileage. According to their advertising the vans are 2006-2012 so don't expect a new and modern van because you won't get one!
