Economy Jade 3 van- look to a different provider
The long and short of my experience was an overwhelming sense that the van I was driving shouldn’t be on the roads, and Camperman is well aware of the safety and general low quality issues. Rotors felt like the tires were going to come spinning off when braking, electrical tape covering the check engine light, drawer lock buttons not functioning or missing, privacy curtains missing hooks and falling into view while driving, refrigerator popping open during transit, bedding/linens likely 10 years old, spare tire used as a primary tire, and the c...ontinued sense the van was going to break down at every turn. I was offered $81 USD to not write an accurate online review and sign a contract stating I would not negatively publish my experience (now guessing there may be a lack of reviews due to this payoff/ contract). In my brief trip I saw many other rental van companies with much nicer vehicles parked all around me. Perhaps I got unlucky with a one-off crappy van but in reading the previous reviews, they might consider updating the fleet and putting more into maintenance. Before I forget to say- Australia was absolutely beautiful with fantastic folks and I look forward to traveling there again, although with a different set of wheels.
Disappointed with the conditions of the van
We were very excited about hiring the Campervan and our trip. However, we got disappointed just in the first seconds we saw the van "Juliette" that was waiting for us. It was an old, dirty van with more than 550000km and 10 years old. This fact put me down as we had planned a trip for 50 days and had my doubts that this van was going to be reliable.
After picking up the van, we went home to give a quick wipe and get a nice fresh air. My surprise was when I opened the cupboards under the sofa to find soil and dirt in each compartment. Even beh...ind the the front seats, we found old receipts and a bonnet from previous travellers. Despite the cleaning rules and conditions, I can tell you that our van did not have a cleaning inspection. Not hygienic!! Three days after starting our trip, my partner was laying on the bed when he realised that the screws that hold the straps of the top bed were missing. At the top bed there are some straps that hold the woods and the bedding for the top bed. The fact that only two screws were holding the whole lot could have caused a serious accident, in the event of a hard break while driving. So, my partner tried to fix it by adding one of the screws from the straps holding under the top bed. What is more, the cupboards under the sofa kept sliding open, while we were driving. In every city where there was a Campeman Depot, we took the van for inspection and despite telling them that the cupboards opened while driving and that some screws at the top bed were missing, they said that it was ok and that’s the best they could fix it. The cupboards kept opening while driving, specially on the curves, and we continued our travels with just 3 out of 5 screws at the top bed. Very unsafe!! During our travels, one of our wheels went flat. The mechanic decided to use the spare wheel, which had ONLY 24 kPa pressure. Unbelievable!!!! We hired the van with full trust that the whole van had been inspected and serviced, but actually Camperman doesn’t care about the safety of people who hire their vans. We were lucky to get the tyre flat in the city, but it could have been in the outback, in the middle of nowhere with a 24kPa tyre pressure on the spare wheel. Very careless!! On the day we returned the van, the lady at the office told us that they don’t service the van. Actually, that evening the van was going straight to Melbourne and none was going to service it after we had done more than 8000km. Very unsafe!! Camperman should make sure that all vans are checked before starting a new journey both mechanically and the interior of the van. People like us hire the vans with full trust that the vehicles are ready to start new journey safely. By the looks of it, Camperman is just using and abusing the vans for the sake of making a huge benefit at the cost of people’s lives and experience. Hold the business, but do a good job! Make sure the vehicles are serviced 100% and the equipment is in good conditions.
Poor attention to detail
Overall not too bad but could have been a lot better. Upon arrival at the depot in Adelaide the campervan (Paradise toilet/shower) was ready to go. We were given hardly any guidance on how anything worked including but not limited to emptying the toilet, changing the gas, how to set up table and bed, how to fill the water tank etc. In fact the only thing we were shown was how to check the oil. When we were shown around it the first thing the lady said was 'I'll show you the faults first", and that was 75% of what were shown.
When we booked the...camper there was an optional extra of a fan heater but when we arrived we were informed they do not have any. It was -3 on the first night and incredibly cold inside the van. The above encounter was made 10x worse by the fact that when we opened our sleeping bags 1 was ripped down the side and the other had a broken zip resulting in us buying new ones. I informed Camperman and to their credit they offered to cover the costs but come on were they really not checked, and no one noticed. Despite being repeatedly told to return it with an emptied toilet the same courtesy was not returned to us. There was an incredibly strong smell of urine despite it never being used at that point by us. We had to buy air freshener just to bare sitting in it. The inside door handle on the sliding door was broken off, meaning my girlfriend could not reach the other handle resulting in me having to open the door every time she had to get out. The back door also did not open making it awkward when trying to store items. These two issues were brought to our attention upon pickup; problems but no solutions. We didn't pay $2000 for a van with known faults we paid for one in good working order.

Unreliable Vehicle, Customer Service Borderline
I was disappointed with this rental. I chose camperman because of their all inclusive pricing and it was definitely not the cheapest rental company.
The van we received was a 2006 with over 500,000 km on it. There were many small irritating things that were below standard: the passenger side window could only be activated from the driver side, the key did not work on the passenger door, the glove box fell off the hinge when opened, seats were worn through in spots, the front of one of the drawers fell off, no USB (not surprising given the ag...e of the vehicle). The biggest issue was the van broke down! We called for assistance and had to check all kinds of fluid levels then finally after an hour, camperman called RACQ. After another half hour the van started so we made our way to town in Mackay, however we were not able to go more than 60 km/hr. We were instructed to go to a mechanic which we did. We had to leave the van with him for over 4 hours during which time he repaired the fuel filter. This was 5:30 pm and it was getting dark so we found a campsite nearby. The most disappointing part was that camperman did not follow up with us to ensure the van was working well despite having my phone number and email address. Of course, no compensation was offered. I would definitely not recommend this company since they stock run down unreliable vehicles and the service is borderline.
Not worth for the money
The booking was easy and nice. The costumers answered quick by questions. The introduction for the camper was not really good. For example we had to find out how the radio gonna work, where you could open the petrol-cover and how to set up the bed.
The car was really old and bad isolated. We were not happy about the condition of the car for that amount of money.

Lies, disappointment and stranded
I booked a Paradise 5 berth for 4 weeks travel between Melbourne and Cairns.
On pick-up the van seemed good. There was a basic tour of the van but I had to ask many more to really get to grips with it. The girl who took my card payment attempted to overcharge me by $100. Maybe an accident, maybe not.
On my 11th day and having travelled less than 2000km (so averaging about 2hrs per day) the water light came on. I pulled over at the next stop which was less than a km. The water was almost empty so I refilled it. I hadn't checked the water le...vel on taking the van, most would expect it to be full, but you apparently get less than 1kms notice before empty. I had to wait 3hrs at the truckstop for it to cool before I carried on to my next overnight which was 11km (i travelled only 150km that day) and 500m away the light came on again. I turned off the engine when i got there and could hear it boiling. I should add that this was during their winter. I phoned and explained and the first thing they accused me of was already breaking a van. Not a great start. To be fair to them, they called a mechanic and he was there within 90 mins. Said the head gasket was definitely blown and he called Camperman to explain while I was there. They said they would call me back within the hour. I waited 3 and called at 5pm before they closed, they said they were organising a van and they would call me in the morning at 8am. I called them at 9 as they again didnt call back and said there would be a van there by midday. Then at 1 I had to call to be told it was 4pm, Then at 5 it was the next day. I eventually got it at 11pm on the 3rd day after numerous broken promises about calling, different problems at their end, clearly all lies as I later found out from the driver delivering the replacement. I had a wedding to go to on the Saturday, should have been in Sydney early Thursday and get it at 11pm Friday. It forced me to drive at night which I was avoiding. Obviously the first thing I check on the new van is the water, it's full. Turn the engine on and there's the water light again. Problem solved. They clearly pay zero attention to their water sensors and we suffer the consequences. The mechanic had told me that to blow a head gasket the dashboard must have been lit like a Xmas tree. (Now I know why it wasn't) There were other issues that you only notice during the trip. Sliding door was dented so there was a gap at the bottom that let all the cold air in at night and made the drive much noisier than it needed to be. 1 window lock was broken. It slid open during the drive. Noisier! You could push it easily, tear the screen and be in the van within seconds. Shower cubicle had a large crack, back door would temperamentally refuse to close. Incorrect microwave plate so rattled during driving, poor inside lighting. I could handle all these as it was an old van. What I couldn't handle was the lack of care for the engine, terrible attitude by staff, continual broken promises and general poor service.
Old; fall apart. Find somewhere else.
Just dropped off our camper man rental, have to say I wasn't impressed. I'll start with the positive:
-easy to deal with
-price match, no hassle
-drop off Arlie beach
Now the negative; very old. The caravan (Toyota hiace toilet and shower) had 450000+ kms, pulled to the left pretty hard (wheel alignment needed) smelled of burnt oil when I overtook.
Very dented and dinged on the outside and in, two handles popped out during our use, sliding door and rear hatch (one was held in by an unsupported sheet metal screw) no wastewater hose for sink and shower.

Below average & poor customer support
We had very good customer support to get us to book (quick response etc). When we booked and picked up the van (that was all good), we went to drive with it. Mechanically there was nothing wrong with it (ok it is not new, but we knew that). We soon began to notice small things that are broken (drawers, windows, unsafe for small kids, broken indoor lights, not clean). That is not the worst part, I kindly tried to contact them through email by pointing out the defects and point for improvement and NO RESPONSE. We will never book again with them.
We were really disappointed by the camper van we hired for a road trip round Victoria. The van had dents and scratches everywhere, it seemed really poorly maintained. We were told we would have a second battery which we could use for at least 1,5 day without charging, what they did not tell was that this only worked for the fridge and lighting, all power outlets would only work when plugged in. Further, the water tank leaked and emptied while driving, so there was no taking fresh water along on trips and we had to fix the cook top ourselves be...fore being able to use this... Apparently, these campers are not meant for real camping, but for powered sites, with water and a restaurant close by...? When we raised these points at returning the camper van, but the guy talking to us acted like this was all normal. Aparantly, at Camperman Australia, this is normal.
Too many faults
Had to wait almost two hours to get van as had be delivered to Brisbane and not the Gold Coast. Van drove alright but passenger window would not open and brakes shuddered when put on (discs needed honing). Found it leaked badly by the sliding door, water poured in there, disaster if clothes or other gear had been left there
In tropical conditions the top bunk was impossible to use, temperature up there too high and wouldn't work if you didn't like confined quarters, I'm not big but I could hardly turn over up there, not enough room between ...you and the roof. Supplied with a two man tent but they forgot to put in the camping mattress. Hot water would not work, one burner on the stove only working until I cleaned the other one up. One utensil draw wouldn't open when you locked it for travelling. Had to spend some time getting it open and never locked it again. Squabs very thin which made for a poor mattress on the bed For a budget van overall it was adequate for two or three people but I would check it out thoroughly before leaving the depot to make sure all facilities worked
It did the job, but that's about it!
We hired a shower&toilet 5 sleeper camper. Right from the start we got a bad feeling about it, we had to wait 30 mins for a staff member at the Melbourne depo to talk to us, then once we got talking he answered his phone about 3 times during conversation. It was obvious that they were very busy, however there seemed to be only one person operating the Camperman business thus impossible for them to give a good service! We were accused of being late even though we rang up the night before and asked to extend the pick-up time.
Just from lookin...g at the van you could tell it was very outdated, it was generally quite unclean, some of the cushions had stains on them, the fridge stunk of rotten milk, there was lots of rubbish behind the driving seat, tables hadn't been wiped, floors hadn't been swept and just quite warn down. The curtains were missing several of there clips letting in a lot of light enabling us to sleep properly, when we picked up were told we were told they ran out. There was a small water leak in the upper window which was above the TV and also one in the ceiling vent posing a danger risk as it rained quite heaverly several times. When we booked we asked for a GPS, however when we picked it up we were informed that there was one saved for us but it was broken - thus were left to find somewhere to buy one cheaply - not even given directions despite asking. The radio was broken however once we rang the Cairns head office they directed us to the Sydney depo where it was fixed by very friendly staff. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and uneven and having spent 3 weeks in it came away with aching backs. Despite this the van ran very efficiently and didn't let us down until our last day when it wouldn't start, but a very nice member of staff was sent out and dealt with it. The front seats were comfy enough with plenty of space to store things and air-con; however there definitely needs to be rear air-con. The shower and toilet looked nice and clean enough, however regrettably we didn't even use them as every where we stayed had facilities! There were good cooking equipment provided, a microwave, toaster and stove. When we dropped off the vehicle we only had to wait a few minutes until a very nice member of staff accessed our van. I had sent an email to the Head Office outlining all of our issues yet after 3 days still had no response despite calling and being promised one, after this we rang the office and demanded a spoken response, all that was addressed was the radio. We still feel as though we were ripped off. After our experience we definitely will not be using Camperman again, and will also go for the bigger RVs with rear air-con!!
Warning not a good experience.
We hired a Toyota high top van from his company for a 3 week trip, on collection we noted the outside light did not work, we were told that it was a wiring problem that they could not fix it. The first night we found the fridge was so loud it had to be switched off at night, we returned to the Cairns depot to be informed that this was normal and ALL 150 units were the same.
By the end of the trip we realised there were more serious issues when we saw that the dangerously positioned replacement interior light unit had started to melt, the fire ...
Questions & Answers
How old are your campervans in average and with how many milage (paradise shower/ toilet)?
The vehicles are old with very high mileage. According to their advertising the vans are 2006-2012 so don't expect a new and modern van because you won't get one!
