Very Disappointed - USER BEWARE
Yesterday I wanted to hire a van for the Monday coming and went through the process, answering the required questions. I am NOT a bad debt, I work full time, full license, stable person and for goodness sake I am 57 and have hired vehicles before from other different places in my life with never a problem. Not with this place as I was declined!!!
They will not tell me why? I have tried to call them twice, tried asking via online chat and also several emails. They say they are not required to tell me yet I am required to give all of my details...!!! I was really looking forward to using this business and after 2 days I have given up. They’re customer service is lacking in any substance and I won’t be recommending them in the future. I have now booked with BUNNINGS in 10 minutes with no problems.
One star is too high a rating for this scheme!
Searching for a car in you area, chosing one at your price range & paying for it are all easy and quick enough as it's all done online...the problem is with actually receiving what you paid for in working condition! Asking a friend to take me to pick up the car was inconvenient enough, but when the car didn't start that's where the real issue was. I called Car Nextdoor for them to cancel the booking, refund me & advise me on what i am meant to do with the car key, but as the company haven't got enough customer service staff i was on hold for cl...ose to an hour while waiting with my friend (my only means of transport) at the dead car. After speaking to them they said 'oh im sorry for the inconvenience' and advised that they will process my refund without actually offering any assisstance. This left me with no way of getting to work and back, so I booked an Uber which cost me a fair bit. I also discovered that I was double charged for the booking, which eventually was refunded in full to me after 10 days of waiting. While the idea of Car Nextdoor is good on paper, the delivery is miserable and very inconvenient. No-one takes accountability for any issues, so for the sake of $5 a day I advise you save yourself the hassle and hire a car from a reputable company. I used Thrifty and not only were they are pleasure to deal with, it was nice dealing with a real person face to face and they upgraded my car free of charge. Ps: the state of the Car Nextdoor car was disgusting - it was filthy outside and in with used tissues on the car seats and in the glove box and it smelt so bad...YUCK!
BUYER BEWARE-1 star is still too much
My dealings with this company have been completely underwhelming to say the least. More than 1 month after renting a car through this bogus company, I was charged a completely outrageous fee for a faulty wiring harness (towing) that literally fell of the vehicle whilst I was driving. I had photos to prove the wiring harness WAS NOT attached to the vehicle in its correct position-a claim that I suggest voids its roadworthy certificate. It is my recommendation that under any circumstance individuals do not sign any documentation, or do any busine...ss with this company. It has been my experience (even with photos) that any correspondence entered into reverts to a endless loop of mind numbing internal crap policy, handled by an off-shore processing facility.
Overcharged and Refunds yet to be issued
Whilst the vehicle hire was excellent, I was overcharged more than $110 for the distance charge and was not reimbursed for the petrol that I put into the car. There is no dispute on the distance traveled or the petrol purchased, but after 2 weeks I am still waiting for a full refund.
An absolute scam!!!!!
Absolutely dreadful organisation - I would never ever recommend them as the car I booked was not at all roadworthy - no window wipers to speak of, rear passenger window got stuck, bits of the car was practically falling off - took it back almost immediately and was not reimbursed the full amount - an absolute scam!!!!
Wrong accusations for damage not done by you.
Wrong accusations for damages you have not caused. I was charged $450 for this, keep in mind that I didn’t do this. Because their policy of uploading pics before trips, I didn’t take a photo of this, error that you humanly can not spot and get every angle of any damage before the trip starts. Keep in mind lighting has a lot to do with how much scratches are visible too. I was accused of causing this scratch because I didn’t capture a pic with this angle. The photos I provided after my trip however did get a snap of this angle and they hold me l...iable. I am absolutely positive that I hadn’t done this. It’s sickening and frustrating. Don’t get trapped. The cars are parked on the streets and has pre existing damage already which the owner is aware of.
Be aware, shocking company
After hiring a car with car next door they wrongly accused myself of incurring damage to the car.
The car was a 20 year old ute and there was a supposed dent put in the bumper of the car that would cost $250 to fix.
Car Next Door responded with a quotation of $1,400 (car wouldn't have been worth that) and have now registered the debt on my credit file.
There is no dispute process with Car Next Door, they are useless and couldn't care less.
The problem with their system is the cars are parked roadside and could incur damage from any passing cars however if you are the last person to rent the car they will blame you for the damage.
Be aware, stay clear!
Provided me car which was not road worthy
Tyres life was almost over , we were about to meet a fatal accident. I am wondering how car was allowed to rent when it was not fit to drive on the road . I spend for the tyre out of my pocket , however claim is not accepted yet . It’s very terrible experience with Car Next Door .
My humble request that don’t risk your family life by renting car from car next door

Love the idea of car sharing but the staff were unhelpful
- Took ages to resolve a dispute
- Staff are generic and I felt condescended to
- No response to my complaints via email and social media
Left me feeling pretty disappointed - great concept but I wish this company had good customer service!
The process to verify took 3 days, with no reasoning on the delay. Two emails sent within one minute apart; one saying account has been approved but the booking is not available. Second one, saying $200 has been withdrawn from my account for the said booking. The customer service officer was awful and unfriendly. I will never use this service, especially after reading the other reviews.
I just signed up as a Car Next Door customer however after having read many negative reviews here, particularly how the company takes hundreds of money out of your card (for alleged damaged) weeks after the rental has been completed, and refer you to debt collectors, I feel uncomfortable to rent a car. Responses provided by the company are very vague and generic and does a little to provide comfort to renters. I signed up thinking this is a great concept and now I'm scared to go near it.
No car on the booked date
We have booked a car, for a special occasion to pick up in the morning. When we went to pick the car up at 08:00, we were told that the car is not avaliable until the evening. No replacement or no alternatives, they cancelled our reservation. They did give us a refund but that is what we were after. Not reliable!
Beware! Don't use this service. They are thieves
Do not use Car Next Door. Use a reputable car rental company instead. I rented a car and they charged me an extra $460 for a little unnoticeable scratch that I was not even responsible for, but couldn't prove otherwise as they claim my pictures didn't show it when you can't tell due to poor lighting.
These people are thieves and they will find any opportunity to take more of your money as they have your credit card details and you are left defenceless thanks to their ridiculous rules. In the rare event you don't get robbed due to some made up...scratch or damage you didn't cause, it isn't even good value compared to other rental companies that have proper insurance in place to protect their customers. I have deleted my account and will not be using it again. I will tell everyone I know to steer clear if they ever need to rent a car, unless they want to get ripped off.
We have tried to hire a car only to be told the car is not functional. This is unacceptable as we dont see the point in hiring your car out if it is not functional. The owner of the car was able to get in contact with car next door to sort out the issue.
While we have been on the phone to them and still waiting, its been 2 HOURS!
Were not happy and have things to sort out and we are being taken for a ride. How is it that the owner was able to get in contact with you but not us!

Guilty Until Proven Innocent
The service for what it's used for, is pretty good. Easy to book, locate lock box, take photos..yada yada yada. Everything has gone smoothly these past years until, something went wrong. I was wrongly accused of smoking in the car, which I didn't (I don't even smoke). If a disgruntled or shall we say, an opportunistic car owner says you've smoked in their car...bang, $60 charge and the cost goes towards 'cleaning' their car. Mother....(I'll save that for reddit). How can Car Next Door ensure your responses to potentially 'fake news/claims' does...n't push away loyal customers by holding their credit card details to ransom and being trigger happy? Then again, my word against the owners. Fine. I get it. But, as all prior reviews state...there's not much acknowledgment of your query or complaint once you get charged. I've been chasing them up for a week to get a satisfactory response. Note; if you're reading this, better focus on your responding to emails first, as opposed to caring what they might say about you. First thing is that it is a little complicate and you absolutely need to be experienced in using apps and smartphone.
Second thing. I borrowed the car without trying to have a look at car rentals thinking that it would necessarily be cheaper. But that has not been the case. It cost me 200$ where I should have paid 135$ with Europcar!!! So be carefull and have a look on car rentals before.
That excepted all good with the car and the owner.

Arrogant, irresponsible, thieves
In late 2018 I hired a van. When I returned it, the lock box failed so I contacted the company for a solution. They had no training or policy to deal with it. They blaming me instead. After an hour, they still couldnt offer a direction. I put the keys and lock box in the van, locked it and left.
Their assumption is that electronics cant fail. They fined me $50. I fought it. they refunded me. They changed their minds and took my $50.00 again. I fought it again. They refunded me after a lot of fighting.
In mid 2019 a friend at film school asked...me to drive a van for a shoot because she was sick. Late at night, I filled it with the wrong fuel. There was no reminder in the van or lable on the fuel cap to say Diesel Only which is what Traditional rentals do. It cost over $450.00 to change the fuel. The company has a contractor and Im sure that carnextdoor gets a cut. I believe the company was negligent in not providing a visible notice of fuel type. Then what they did which I believe is illegal. was to take money from my credit card to pay for tolls. I didnt hire the van. I was not the account holder. I was not in any way responsible for any expenses. I was a member of carnextdoor. They associated my name with the van and simply decided to take money from credit card because my number was already in their system.
Was held liable for $670 in damages.Only person to speak to during dispute was an overseas call center.
Really bad.The vehicle had a flashing oil light so had to return it rather then wreck the engine. The photo upload app didn't work reliably and they extorted a total of $670 from me for a scratch I didn't cause.
Trip Spoiler with zero empathy for customer
I booked my car for 6 days for upcoming Christmas vacation however received a rude shock since the car owner suddenly decided to cancel my booking without any rhyme and reason and that too during peak Christmas period. Tried Car Next Door first time and must admit it was a mistake since they have NO POWER to protect the interest of customers. This is a ridiculous platform to book cars as you can be up for rude shock anytime if the owner doesnt respect the commitment of confirmed bookings.
It is also insulting for car next door to provide me w...ith a compensation of 10$ (LOL) which I outrightly declined .... They have no idea of the inconvenience caused to me and my family by jeapordising our Christmas vacation plan. Spoke with customer care and they seem helpless and hopeless. Spoke with car owner and he also did not provide reason for cancellation. Probably he might post the car again for HIRE with higher daily rate. Still Awaiting my refund... :(
BEAWARE. Don't ever use this company. I've been informed today that I'm getting charged $460 dollars for damage on a car that I didn't damage. In there policy if anything happens to the car when you have it for example say someone comes and smashes all the windows or say someone comes and smashes into the car when it's parked guess who's at fault. They even charge you if it hails and the car gets damage. I strongly advise nobody to use this company. I've done 14 trips and they do not care one bit about there customers there all for the car owner. I will no longer by using there service.
Update: So this disgusting money hungry business is charging me 780 dollars for 5 scratches on this car.
