Perfect size and power for my needs
I had this router sitting in its box for over 3 years before I used it. The first time I used it the plunge mechanism stuck on the clamped position and would not release until I gave the top of the router a couple of hard taps with the palm of my hand. This has happened every time since. I contacted someone who works for the Australian distributor (there is no customer support phone, email or chat on the DeWalt website) who suggested that the clamp has been over tightened and has perhaps damaged the brass clamping piece. I have since found that...applying only sufficient tightening to lock the plunge is the solution. I really like the weight and balance of this router and the dust extraction is better than most. As I intend to use it for dovetailing in a Leigh jig I will purchase another one so that I don't have to keep changing bits. There are few alternatives in the market for this size, weight and power unless you want to spend twice as much for a Festool OF 1400. Happy so far.
Questions & Answers
Can the router base be centered to the spindle?
It's wider on one side because of the hose, so the dust/chips can be extracted properly. So no; it's designed that way deliberately. You could always make a new base out of MDF to whatever size you want and use that.
Hi David, thank you for the answer; however the question relates to centering the bit inside the central hole of the base. Many times one has to use router guide bushings (like the one specified below), and will need the bit centered.
Is this model suitable for fixing into router table
Depends what type of router table you have? I use an Incra insert which is pre-drilled for the Triton router range whereby you can remove the plunge spring (see www.woodworksupplies.com.au or www.timberbits.com.au). The only problem I find with using plunge routers in router tables is that the spring makes it hard to adjust the height accurately. I don't think you can remove the spring on the DW621.
