I have a panel on the roof that is leaking. Can I turn the pump off while I am looking at getting it replaced and just rely on the off-peak power to heat the tank?

Hi Anthony, Thanks for sending through your details. The plumber will need to isolate the flow & return lines at ground level. The solar module will need to be turned off, the element left on, the tank will work like a normal electric storage tank, however because the element is mid-height, only 200L of hot water will be available.

Hi Davos,

Thanks for your question.

Each collector is 2M x 1M, allow for approximately 3.5M overall width and 2.2M approx height.

Water not circulating through panels? The System is using around 4kwh of electricity per day even on hot sunny days. Whilst 5kw solar PV system alongside is producing at 80% capacity. The plumber replaced the non return valve but hasn’t fixed problem. Temp on tank at thermostat is 80deg. Water in cylinder sounded like it was boiling on sunny day and did circulate after drawing off until noise stopped approx.2 mins. Could a faulty pump cause this or maybe thermostat overheating the water

Hi Peter, We would suggest contacting our After Sales & Service on 1300 365 115 Option 2 to be referred through to one of our Service Agents that specialise in Solar. There may be a number of factors causing what you are experiencing, it will need an Agent to properly diagnose what is going on.

If i have hot water during the day but not at night is it safe to say that the heating element is U/S. Ps. the CB is still on and hasn't tripped

Dux
Dux   DM

Hi Rob, Thanks for raising your question. We would suggest talking with your energy provider first as there may be a supply issue there. Then have the thermostat and element checked after that, there may possibly be an issue there.

If I am away from home for long periods, can I turn off the electric booster on our 315 litre system, if so, how? I note there is a 240 volt isolation switch and also that there is a plug into a 240v power point. I understand that power is still required for the circulation pump, but would like to stop the boost while I am absent for long periods on holidays etc. Regards Keith

Dux
Dux   DM

Hi Keith, It's our pleasure to answer your question. The element (switched on via the isolation switch) can be switched off when going away, however arrangements should be made to have it switched back on 24-48 hours prior to use so that the water is properly sanitised per AS3498.

My electric boosted solar Hot water system has developed a problem. It is 400ltr and there are only 2 people in the house. The water is always hot and has been more than sufficient. Recently we have found that the water, though hot all day has been much cooler in the morning. We live in Hervey Bay Queensland and our climate is warm and the nights are not cold. We always leave power supplied to the unit but seldom turn on the electric booster. The pump seems to run when required and the Power light is green and generally the status light is either off or hard red. I wonder is it possible if the logic is misbehaving and if the pump is circulating water through the panels over night when they are cooler than the tank? The controller is a Hot Logic H3201 Vsn 5.1. I disconnected and measured the Collector sensor mid afternoon and it was 1188 ohms. The relief valve operates OK. Niel 0418751166

Can I run my dux ecosmart HWS on solar by switching off the electrics?

Dux
Dux   DM

Hi Peter, It's our pleasure to answer your question. The unit must have power at all times to the pump module. The element must have power available to it, either by continuous power or via controlled load (off-peak), please contact your energy provider to see what tariffs are available, there is no manual boosting or boost switch.

Australian Standards AS3498 mandate that a solar system must reach 60 Deg C every 24 hrs to sanitise the water from Legionella Bacteria, that is why the element must be powered, solar alone cannot guarantee to satisfy that requirement.

The unit has a thermostat factory set to 60 Deg C, so on days of high solar gain and low hot water use, the store temperature can potentially reach 85 deg C, so the element won't come on between 60 & 85 Deg C.

Hi Team, just wondering how much power draw to expect from the DUX ECOSMART pump. Our solar smart metre is indicating approximately 3.6kw/hr is being used after each shower? Cheers, Chris

Dux
Dux   DM

Hi Chris, Thanks for raising your question. The pump used to circulate the water from the tank to the collectors and back again has little power consumption, approximately 22w. What will be responsible for that 3.6kW/hr consumption is the boost element, that is required to be on to sanitise the water from Legionella bacteria per AS3498 to 60 Deg C.

However for it to heat up the top half of the tank (as the element is mounted 1/2 way up), please allow for up to 3.5hrs power to be available to the element so that it can heat up the top half of the tank to 60 Deg C.

You may wish to talk to your energy provider and electrician to see what options there are for varying the power supply to the element.

Hi, I have a Dux gas boosted solar hot water system installed (DL15DS) It's date of manufacture is March 2013. It is failing (uses too much gas and unit leaking) and I need to replace it. My questions are. 1/Can I use the existing solar panels with a new dux electric boosted solar system (250DPM36)? 2/If so, where can I buy just the unit in Melbourne?

Dux
Dux   DM

Hi John, We'd be happy to assist you with your question. The existing collectors can be reused. We would not recommend installing the 250DMP36 as it is 250L capacity compared to your existing 315L.

The electric boosted tank has its element halfway up the tank, meaning only the top half of the tank is boosted by element, so a 250L tank effectively becomes 125L, 315L is then 157L in conditions of low solar gain and/or high hot water usage.

A 315DPM36 is the recommended replacement. Please have your installer call our Technical Support on 1300 365 115 option 3 for guidance on changing some controller parameters when installing the 315DPM36.

I have very good cold water pressure but the hot water is very low. I have a 35136e ecosmart solar cylinder with electric boost. Does the inlet of the cylinder have a filter fited?. As there must be a parcial block on hot water side as the glitter the water from the solar the greater the pressure.

Hi Jayne,

The installing plumber would have fitted a pressure limiting valve to the cold line supplying the water heater, it is an installation requirement per AS3500.4 if the supply pressures are high.

I found the mixing tap to be at fault. I replaced it and now we have pressure back in our hot water taps, but thanks for the reply.

Had same problem the inlet water pipe was choked with calcium, cleared it and water pressure increased a hundred percent.

I want to know if your system can accommodate the solar panels being 30meters away from the hot water tank

Dux

Hi Kram, The maximum distance (pipe length) between the tank and collectors is 20m. If the tank or collectors cannot be relocated to this distance, please consider other options such as condensing gas continuous flow units.

When the Hotlogic power light flashes red, it appears to be due to an "output error", and the pump fails to pump water to the panels. The system is so bad and so expensive to repair that I'm inclined to turn the controller off and treat it just as an (inefficient) electric water heater. Is there another solution?

What should I do with my electric boosted dux solar hot water system in winter when I am away on holiday for 3 months. I live in Barossa Valley Sth Australia which is prone to severe frosts.

Dux
Dux   DM

Hi Darryl, We hope we have answered your concern in your other post. If you didn't receive it, here it is: Please ensure that the power to the solar module is left turned on at the power point, this will allow the solar module to circulate water to the collectors, providing frost protection.

The element can be powered on, but it should be powered back on a minimum of 24hrs before first use (perhaps arrange this with a neighbour), this is to ensure that the water is sanitized in accordance with AS3498.

Also run the taps to bleed any hydrogen out of the tank, ensure that there are no sources of ignition when this is occurring.

For any concerns, you can email directly help@dux.com.au.
