- Cinetic Big Ball Allergy
Not worth the money, unlike older Dysons. Design flaws plague this model.
As I've had this vacuum for a few years now, I feel I am now able to provide a comprehensive review of its abilities. We used to have a Dyson upright that had served us well but we weren't a fan of how heavy it was to push and how difficult it was to use the tightly retracted hose without the unit tipping over, so we decided to stay within the brand and purchase a more familiar barrel-type vacuum (like our previous ones), despite this being the most we spent on a vacuum, which was reasonable when expecting this to last many years. We spent extr...a on the Allergy variant as we were interested in the turbine brush for use on carpeting. The truth is, it isn't really that great on any floor surface. On my old house's laminate floors, the floor tool simply pushed dirt around rather than sucking it in unless you made a conscious effort to go over dust very slowly. On tile, it's marginally better but not very much so. On carpet, it was fine initially on shallow loop pile carpet, but on any cut pile rug/carpeting (still shallow), it struggles to pick up surface level dust even with a clean bin and otherwise good suction. The floor tool despite it being Dyson's "best", needs constant passes just to get surface level dust, let alone embedded dust which there's no way of proving if it is removed or not. We never wear our outdoor shoes inside so the carpets never get too dirty, but for those who do, I doubt this machine will inspire any confidence as it is already struggling with regular house dust. The BIGGEST issue with this machine is the design flaws and poor build quality. The most troublesome issue is the weak latch mechanism on the bin. It is a small bit of plastic which holds the bin shut but I have faced the same issue many have complained about since the very beginning, which despite how tight and secure it is when installing the bin, upon removal, the bin lid will flip open and dump all the dust you’ve been vacuuming up back onto your floors. I’ve attached an image of the size of the catch, beside a 20c coin for scale. It is absolutely tiny and over time as the motor’s heat/vibration makes the plastic mechanisms not as tightly sealed as it is brand new (this part sits right up beside the motor), it is able to slide away from the catch. I cannot fathom why they would cheap out on this vital piece, when they simply could’ve made a wider ridge for the hook to catch on. To date, I’ve gone back to Dyson numerous times and they just keep sending me the same flawed bin which works fine initially but then exhibits the same issue after less than a year (and I don’t even vacuum very frequently). I cannot trust it anymore and have to have my hand under the container as I carefully walk to my bin to empty it. That brings me to the emptying part – it’s nowhere near as easy or hygienic as they make it seem. The bottom lid gets dust and hair in its crevices, and as with any other bagless there seems to be a small plume of dust that flies around as you empty it. Many times, I’ve had to even use my hands to aid clumps of dust out into an old plastic bag. I cannot believe this is marketed towards ALLERGY sufferers, I don’t have any allergies and it’s sickening enough emptying this one and its poorly designed bin without dust flying everywhere. Within a year, in early 2017, the wheel fell of the unit and upon inspection, it was an in-warranty repair as the heat generated by the unit had weakened the plastic attachment. It had to be sent back to Dyson to be attached back on. That was pretty disappointing as I’ve never once had that happen on previous models but the wheel on this unit seems to be a thin disc of plastic built more for aesthetics than function, but I’m just glad it happened within the warranty period. I’ve paid for the extended warranty a couple of years back as the manufacturer’s warranty was about to end and the machine had given me enough worries as it is. Now that is about to end soon and overall, given the disappointing price to performance ratio of this vacuum, this is the very last Dyson I will own. I’ve always believed in the bagless hype but after seeing that even this the ‘ultimate’ bagless vacuum, has not been appreciably better and in some cases worse than my previous one, I may very well get my very first bagged vacuum (going by Product Review, I seemed to have found some top-rated Mieles, plus I’ve already had good experiences with the brand, so I am tempted). I was never a fan of consumables but seeing what a pain this is in terms of maintenance and emptying, my mind is now open to alternatives. Just don’t fall for the marketing – the whole bin design is flawed and it is NOT a pleasant experience dealing with this in the long run – but then again this is a brand that demonises well-priced traditional alternatives to sell you their own $800 tower fan or $500 hairdryer, so why am I surprised that quality went down the drain and margins shot up with this most-recent series of vacuums. Never again…
Purchased in May 2016 at Dyson for $599.25.
This unit is terrible , Ive had it for 2years and now the rotating head wont rotate, suction is awful even after emptying barrel.
Head is forever flicking up more dirt than it sucks in .
Purchased in November 2017.
I wish I could like it, but it's really poor!
I have always used Dyson since I moved out of home and with a home business they have been used daily. The first Dyson was AMAZING, it had a turbo head and lasted over 10 years...the only reason I replaced it was that the head died. I replaced it initially with a handheld Dyson and I couldnt believe how poor the suction was for a DYson. Then because I needed a vacuum that could clean well I purchased this! Sooo apart from the smallest thing causing lack of suction, the vacuum has more rattles than I can figure out! The head that comes with it h...ad such a high pitch noise, until it started rattling and basically being the most useless piece of $800 I've purchased. Seriously, $800 is a LOT of money for a vacuum. It has lasted 2 years...the motor runs, the rest is just rubbish. It just frustrates me, as my original was amazing and I wish the brand had continued with that kind of quality.
Purchased in April 2017.
Won't be buying Dyson again
I purchased the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Allergy vacuum cleaner nearly one year ago. At first I was impressed by its suction and it seemed to remove a lot more dirt than our old Dyson. Although, upon initial use on our hard-floor areas, I noticed that the supplied turbine head would just flick dirt and larger particles around the room. I had to purchase another Dyson hard-floor head, which does a better job but clogs up with dust very quickly.
After using it for some weeks, I noticed a number of things; it would require emptying multiple ti...mes during the course of one house clean (our house is not large). One of the joints on the articulating wand arm would frequently pinch the skin on my arm leaving a significant purple bruise. This 'pinching' has happened to me on multiple occasions since and it has also happened to my mother on one occasion when she used the vacuum cleaner. The bin emptying mechanism is clunky and doesn't work very well - I have also found that if you do not click the bottom lid shut perfectly after emptying, it will open the next time you remove it from the vacuum cleaner, spilling dirt everywhere in your house (this just happened to me for the hundredth time - hence this review - I've had enough!). The anti-topple feature works but you still have to stand there and wait for the vacuum cleaner to correct itself so it doesn't actually 'save time'. The suction is odd - while it seems to suck well on carpet, and does appear to vacuum up a lot of dirt, if I take the head off and try to vacuum up something small - like a dead fly on a window sill - it struggles to pick it up. I have tested this by putting my hand near the end of the hose when it is on and it feels weirdly like a gentle breeze. Although, if you actually place your hand over the entire nozzle it does have a decent amount of suction. This is just an unusual observation I have made, but there is something 'off' about the suction on this unit. After nearly one year of use, it requires even more constant emptying (sometimes 3 or 4 times a clean) and it loses suction significantly. It also gets extremely hot during use - so hot you can barely touch the barrel. This makes the room hot and vacuum cleaning is now just a sweaty workout. On the positives, I do like the fact that I can vacuum under the entire bed due the flexibility of the hose and its hinges. It can vacuum, although - depending on how you look at it - not very efficiently. I do like the longer electrical cord too. The telescopic handle is great for someone like me (5'11"). The emptying function is handy, it just need significant refinements. I'm not interested in a replacement, or a free trip to the Dyson repair shop. I'm really just waiting for the day this product of planned obsolescence explodes and is no longer usable - then I will buy something else.
I'm very frustrated with my Dyson Ball
My Dyson ball vacuum does not vacuum forwards, ie I can only vacuum is by pulling the vacuum back (not forward). I am very frustrated with it. I have cleaned out everything and know there are no blockages. Would appreciate the answer to why my vacuum can't vacuum forwards on my carpet.
Two years And That Is The End Of This Disaster.
I researched long and hard before making the switch from Meile to the Dyson Big Ball Allergy. I bought this at Harvey Norman, thankfully in a sale.
Within three months a wheel snapped off one side. At first I spilled the contents a lot but soon became used to emptying. Regardless, its hard to close without dust flying everywhere.
The worst thing is hair. As others have stated, as soon as a few hairs are in the head you have to stop and cut them out with scissors. The black bristles wore out quickly so I replaced that part. Hang on, is hair t...
Terrible save your money
I’ve had this vacuum for over a month now I brought it to replace my old Dyson which I’ve had for 10 years it was amazing this vacuum however is not. It’s terrible the head on it is so hard to use and doesn’t pick everything up. So I purchased another head the wooden floor one and it’s a little better but gets blocked up. The machine is awkward to use. And having to change heads on my couch and rugs is painful. The little plastic clip that you use to empty is hopeless it unclips very easy. The head it comes with gets hair stuck in it and I’m co...nsistently having to stop the vacuum and clear the heads. I contacted Harvey Norman and Dyson after I use this twice and neither was Interested anything I had to say. So I’m stuck with a very expensive useless vacuum.
I bought this vacuum cleaner less than two years ago. I thought it was a lot of money but had heard good things about Dyson from Australian friends (we lived OS for 9 years). I immediately had trouble with the bristles on the head which sheared off in parts. I had to dismantle the head regularly to cut out the strands of hair wrapped around it, with scissors. (Have never had to do this with any other vacuum cleaner) Over the months, various parts of the casing have broken off - the two small ball parts near the head were first to go, now the la...rge ball halves have broken off too. I could glue them back on but they are supposed to rotate like wheels. Now I have bare screw ends sticking out, waiting to scratch my walls. We do not use it roughly at all, so I'm really disappointed. Not good value for money.
Very heavy going
Update: Dyson customer service is much better than the new machine. They are having machine picked up and refunding total cost. There is a 30 day money back policy.
I found someone who will repair the old machine for less than $250. Will review that service when it is complete.
Large house. Wood floors. Tribal rugs. Carpet.
Took advice of customer service woman on phone about which model to buy when very old Dyson motor burned out. Dyson no longer has replacement parts, does not service old machines. I should h...

Most Expensive And Most Worst Vacuum Cleaner I Ever Owned.
When our last vacuum cleaner died, we decided to give the Dyson Big Ball Allergy a go. Saved up for it and bought it at the beginning of 2017, before reading any reviews on it. I am sorry...Dyson know how to market and advertise their product really well but it has left me disappointed. I have used it only a hand full of times because I hate using it so much. It loses suction very quickly, just takes really fine dust to build up after only vacuuming one small room and suction is gone. The power head stops spinning as soon as two strands of long...hair are around it. The small dust brush is hopeless as the design is splayed and the bristles are long so when you place it onto a surface it flattens out and just does not suck up any dust...it just brushes the dust off where it lands on another surface instead of being sucked up into the vacuum. Really hate this vacuum and to be honest I want my money back and you can have your vacuum back, as the cheap vacuum cleaners do a better job. Not worth the money we paid for...sorry Dyson but I have to be truthful. Do not recommend this Dyson to anyone!
Issues with emptying.
Have the Dyson cinetic big ball allergy for 12 months.
Since the day I got it I've had no end of trouble emptying the barrel.
It either opens itself up as I try and first remove it from its base and it spills all its contents all over the place.
If I can lift it off successfully then yeh ha !!!!!
Sadly once I empty it into the trash bin the bloody thing won't close properly.
The clip that attaches the barrel back together is so small and a bit out of line so closing it becomes an issue.
Don't think the Dyson is all its cracked up to be.
Filter blocks faster then the canister.
I clean a doctors building and the cord is too short, good thing it rolls back to position when tired over. The filter gets blocked faster then the canister, i need to empty too many times. It didn't come with a hard floor brush, so using the power head on the hard floor doesn't get into smaller spaces which means I need to bring my home vacuum in to clean thoes areas. Had others come into work with me and they all complain about the vacuum.
Very disappointed in this vacuum. It is so loud on hard floors, the head doesn't follow walls very easily and most of all it doesn't pick up all the dirt or larger bits on hard floors. What use to take me 20mins to vacuum it now takes me an extra 10-15 because I have to keep going over the same spots to pick it all up. It's like the head rotates to fast and spits the dirt out. At times you can feel it hit your feet. On the other hand it is good on carpet, I am so disappointed that for $800 the technology is meant to advance not get worse.
The wheel has fallen off twice!!!!!!
I bought this $800 vacuum as my son has allergies. As i took the vacuum out of the box the wheel fell off. It was brand new! So i returned it and it took them 2 weeks to send me a new vacuum. After about 3 months the same thing happened.... the wheel fell off. So again i sent the vacuum back and it took 2 weeks for them to repair it and send it back. Imagine not vacuuming the house for 2 weeks. And the Customer Service staff never apologised.
Poor quality for such an expensive vacuum.
Rubbish, no feel and ruins short pile carpet
It is absolute rubbish.
The head and stem is light giving no feel.
The head has damaged my short pile carpet.
It doesn't suck up much. Especially animal fur. I have a long haired cat and a short haired dog and it gets like less than 50% of it. I have better luck with a first generation Dyson stick.
It is damn near impossible to empty the tiny barrel thing. It doesn't hold much.
The customer service for Dyson has gone to merde too. I have complained several times and requested my money back and I'd give them their 'vacuum' back a...
Questions & Answers
Hi I am wondering where is the filter located for Dyson Cinetic Big Ball allergy
The Dyson Cinetic Big Ball features Dyson Cinetic Science. Dyson Cinetic Science is so efficient, the dust and dirt is separated from the air into the bin, without the need for a washable filter. The machine has a post motor filter which is there to capture carbon dust from the motor however is designed to last the lifetime of the machine without the need to wash/replace it.
Dyson Cinetic Science features ultra-efficient cyclones with Cinetic tips. These tips allow our cyclones to be small, and they vibrate to ensure the ultra-fine dust doesn't clog them, rather, ends up in the bin for you to empty when you have finished your cleaning session.
We have a dyson cinetic big ball allergy ... the power head has just stopped working. We have dismantled and reassembled the head and there are no blockages and there are no blockages in the machine. It still has good suction, just the power brush is not working. Any ideas?
Make sure it's not tangled with hair or anything like that (cotton etc)
Thanks, we have done that too with no success.
I am sorry to hear about this.
We would kindly ask you to email email@example.com with your details and our Dyson Experts will be more than happy to help in getting this resolved.
We look forward to hearing from you and assisting you.
I have a Dyson 214891-01 Cinetic Big Ball Allergy Barrel Vacuum and recently bought a Dyson 920018 Swivel Hard Floor Attachment, but it does not fit my vacuum! This is despite it being advertised as "fits all models except DC01, DC21 Motorhead, DC23 Motorhead and cordless models". Is there an adapter to make it fit?
Thank you for your query.
In the box included with your Cinetic Big Ball machine at time of purchase, there is an adaptor included to allow use of accessories purchased at store. You can see it in use here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGAgc2Cw6wg
If we can assist further, please just reach out via firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be more than happy to help.
