Dyson CY22 Cinetic Big Ball Animal + Barrel Vacuum Cleaner
As a ProductReview.com.au Ambassador I have been given the Dyson CY22 Cinetic Big Ball Animal + Vacuum cleaner to test and review. At the end of my review I get to keep the item.
I would like to assure the reader of this review that this review, despite the reward of a free product is a totally unbiased and genuine review of my experience.
The Dyson CY22 Cinetic Big Ball Animal + Barrel Vacuum Cleaner can be purchased from the Dyson Australia online shop for $749.00.
The machine was designed in England, which is prominently advertised all o...ver the box. It’s not until you take the dust housing off the vacuum cleaner that you see in very fine print that it is Made in Malaysia. Not that this detracts from the quality of the unit at all. The vacuum cleaner weighs 11.30kg. Out of the Box 1 Vacuum Cleaner, 1 Extendable Wand, 1 Carbon Fibre turbine floor tool, 1 Combination tool, 1 Stair tool, 1 Swivel hard floor tool, 1 Tangle free turbine tool, 1 Groom tool, 1 Quick release adaptor.
Having a ball with Dyson...
I gather that there are Dyson people and anti-Dyson people. Those against Dyson complain about the price of their products and with vacuums the noise level being excessive, amongst other things. If you're an anti-Dyson person, you may as well move on, as I'm not going to be able to sell you this vacuum. This is an excellent vacuum in lot's of ways, but it has some of the same Dyson foibles that some of their other models suffer from, but which committed Dyson customers are apparently blind to!
I do find the high-pitched whine of the vacuum...motors to be annoying, but nothing in comparison to the high-pitched whine of screaming children. Either are easily solved by using earplugs or my preferred solution, bluetooth earpieces playing some calming classical music. Assessing the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal+ is fairly easy. Firstly, after unpacking the machine and it's multiple parts you have to assemble it for use, this may be your first hurdle to surmount, because the "User Guide" has very sparse instructions and as with most technology products these days, it is expected that there is a level of intuitive assembly skills on the part of the customer! If that is your first problem, then it's down hill from here, because you have an array of attachments for different floors, carpet and furnishings which would baffle Einstein and once again the "User Guide" is very secretive about their possible uses. I deduced that the "Grooming Tool" was for grooming your pet(s). I know it sounds logical to suck the loose hair off your moggie or doggie before they deposit it on your carpets or settee, but in practical terms have you ever tried vacuuming an animal? I was in hot pursuit of my cat as it scurried up the hallway escaping a screaming human, dragging a ferociously loud plastic monster. He only escaped because I was abruptly stopped in my pursuit by an impracticably short power cord (a measly 6 metres). Darn it, I'll get him next time, should he ever come out from under the bed! Clearly, there are enough attachments for this vacuum for you to find something that's useful for the job at hand. However if you're like me, you'll find a couple of all-rounders that satisfy your everyday needs for carpets, hard floors and furniture and stick to them, the others (including the grooming tool) will be left in the laundry cupboard. In short, this is as good a vacuum as you are likely to find in the market, yes, it has a few things to get use to, or could be improved a little, but overall it's a well designed machine (who's ever seen a self-righting vacuum after its rolled over?) and what may seem strange to you at first, will become second nature in time. The bottom line is, if you really hate it, take it back within 45 days and get a refund, it's not the end of the world, it's my cat who thinks it is!
There is nothing like a Dyson to leave an impression!
Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal+
In the world of vacuum cleaners, I suspect there are few people who haven’t heard of Dyson as a brand and of James Dyson’s reputation as a British Inventor. Dysons design some of the most innovative vacuum cleaners that many of us would like to have in our homes. James Dyson came up with the idea of the worlds first bagless vacuum cleaner in the 1970s after being frustrated with his own vacuum cleaner and his experience with the old bag system that constantly clogged up with dust and reduced the s...uction performance. James Dyson demonstrates very clearly in adverts that he wishes to invent things to perform better and to their maximum potential. I was given this great opportunity to test the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Plus, the second to the highest in the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball range. The top of the range is the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Absolute. It just so happens I was thinking of getting my apartment professionally cleaned as the carpet was looking like it needed professional attention. My generic vacuum cleaner was not doing a very good job of what it was supposed to do, vacuum the carpet and make it look like the carpet had been vacuumed. It was a perfect test, to see how the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Plus would perform.
Just about close to perfect
For those who are in a hurry, here is the executive summary:
- The suction is phenomenal.
- It goes around corners easily.
- Should you manage to make it fall on its side, it automatically rolls itself into the upright position again (see video).
- Emptying the barrel is amazingly easy, quick and clean (well, mostly).
- There are no filters. Hence no replacing, washing or checking filters anymore.
- The turbo head works really well on a relatively thick carpet....
Much better than expected - Love it
I have to start this review by stating I have NEVER owned or used a Dyson product. (ever!)
Been quite skeptical about Dyson products and never believed the hype.
But the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball has complete changed my opinion on Dyson products.
The cleaner has lots of pros and a few cons but overall, I definitely rate this product 5 stars.
Please note this review is based upon cleaning of carpet floors only.
We have no cats and one spoodle so we didn't really get the chance to test the cleaners ability to remove pet fur from lounges and rugs.
Designed for what it's meant to do!
Recently we received a Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal+ as a part of Product Review’s Ambassador Program, so let’s start at the beginning.
1. Packaging and Documentation
It arrived in a sturdy cardboard box and packaging with minimal waste and no polystyrene; you can be highly confident of receiving a complete unit in good, undamaged condition.
I know there is an old adage that the user manual is for those who know no better, but in this case I sat down to read the documentation and found it to be inadequate at best; it featured a lot of repeate...
I paid $700 (on special) for this cleaner which was delivered in January 2018, I had an early model Dyson which was very loud but a great cleaner. A part broke but because of age of cleaner, replacement part not available. When we release the barrel on the new cleaner to empty it, it spits the contents on the floor. When the barrel is less than half full, the suction dies alarmingly and the cleaner has to be emptied. The cleaner is still under warranty but frankly I would prefer my money back. So disappointed! The cleaner is used on carpet and tiles. I bought this one as we have a cat. It does pick up the cat fur extremely well. But when you have to keep emptying it when it is not even half full, it is not worth it.
In a word ‘WOW’ -- [I am impressed]
I was very impressed with the Dyson Big Ball Animal from the time I opened the carton.
The simple and neat way the contents were packed made it easy to remove and assemble the vacuum cleaner and use it.
It only took a few minutes to get everything going.
The quality and thought put into this unit is very impressive from first glance.
The attachments fit very well and are easy to connect and click together securely.
There are no loose fitting hoses or attachments; you have everything you could want for (normal) house cleaning supplied in the car...
Wish I had of read reviews, waste of money
I bought this vacuum in June and have had nothing but trouble with it. The multi head doesn't even make contact with the carpet so nothing gets picked up. Dyson used to be the go to manufacturer and this is our 4th dyson, I have 2 cordless dysons and older bagless that I now use for the cars. I was looking for a good vacuum for the bigger jobs but I won't be buying Dyson again.
The ultimate vacuum of the future
I recently got the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animial+ yesterday and couldn't believe the power of it let alone the design.
When turning it on to vacuum my carpet within living room the power of the suction was mind blowing. Never seen my carpet so clean within the amount of minutes. It was like getting a professional to do it but instead it was me.
Love the fact that when you go from Carpet to Tile which the setting change automatically where I too used it within the kitchen.
I'm a big believer on the design/colour of a product because if yo...u like the way it looks naturally you want to get your hands on it. The colours of blue, red and grey was simply out of this world! I didn't have any issues with it tipping over given the 2x circular wheels on each side making it quite easy to use when vacuuming.
Durable and functions well. But over priced. You are paying for quality with strong suction. Don't use this on floor boards or polished tiles or you'll see scratches after. It works best for carpets. Put a Dyson label on the vacuum and expect to pay a 50 - 70% premium.

Good enough suction, but don’t buy because you loved the Dyson Classic.
I bought this because I absolutely loved my Dyson Classic, which was starting to die after 16 years. What a let down! The techie guys at Dyson obviously thought they were making design improvements, but have failed miserably.
There is only one handle, compared to the Classic, which means that if you dock the wand before you pick up the entire unit, you invariable get clonked in the head.
The ball wheels I initially thought were pretty good, but have since realised that on corners, where the straight wheels hit the skirting boards, this one impa...

Very strong suction. I got this one after my old Hoover died and this Dyson hasn't disappointed. After vacuuming, the place feels very clean, including the air. I don't even see little dust particles floating in the air after finishing vacuuming. Emptying the cannister, however, isn't a breeze as it is advertised. I have to empty the cannister and tap gently on the top a few times to remove all the dust. Overall, very satisfied.

I use this vacuum predominantly on hard floor. It is very powerful. It's very easy to maintain. Please note that all bagless vacuum cleaners need to have their filters cleaned regularly for optimum performance.
Great Suction minimal effort
So far so good. I have hard floors and multiple rugs and I needed a vacuum that would cope well with both. The suction on the rugs is fantastic. I like my stick for small jobs but this is a serious cleaner. I note the on off switch and cord retraction buttons are flimsy compared to previous machines so the jury is still out on those but the machine is easy to use and effortless the move around.
Motor burnout after 3 years.
This is our second Dyson barrel vac. First one burnt the motor out after 7 years.
Purchased this supposedly bigger and better and more expensive machine 3 years ago. Motor has burnt out once again.
We have a Dyson handheld that gets more use than this and has had no issues.
I guess you don’t get what you pay for.
Significant decline in quality
We owned and old Dyson powerhead vacuum and loved it. The Animal couldn't be more opposite. The head quality is fragile at best. The brushes have not survived 12 months of domestic use. The lack of a true powerhead has significantly degraded the ability to remove dirt from carpet. The bin empty process has been someone that must have been tasked with with designing the worst possible mechanism. The bin capacity appears to be about 1/10 of the older Dysons and has to be emptied far more frequently in a house that has long-haired girls and a dog.
I won't be buying another one.
Bought this one to replace the stand up type Dyson Animal which was heavy
The ball is lighter and easier to use. it sucks like mad and is easier to clean. The container for dust is a little smaller, but it seems more robust and is easy to take out and in.
Best vacuum I've used
I use this vac on rugs and hard floors. We have a dog and a cat and there are three adults and two messy kids.
I upgraded from a bag free Hoover and what a difference!
There's no messing about with this one - everything gets sucked up and because it's bagless you see it happening. My rugs haven't ever had such a thorough clean.
I like the fact you can clean the filters yourself and don't have the added expense of buying replacements.
The parts click neatly together and can be easily taken apart.
It's a very attractive-looking machine, which i...
Lots of suction, lots of plastic parts to break
The vacuum cleaner is really good as far a suction and cleaning power go. Gives a good deep clean on carpet and easy going on tile floors. The lack of bag is a great concept and there's a good array of tools.
On the downside Dyson has never been big on plastics quality. The plastics components are weak and flimsy and will fail easily. Whilst its a good cleaner make sure and take out extended warranty
Questions & Answers
We have had our CY22 for a couple of year but it has just started making this very loins siren sound after a few seconds of running. It’s not the motor as the pitch of the sound changes with airflow and is opposite to motor speed(lower sound higher revs and vice versa). Bin is regularly emptied.
Dyson - I am very excited about my new vacuum and think I may just have to figure out how to work some aspects. I have used it four or five times. I have had a few trial and error mistakes with the bin not being properly closed and vacuuming dirt all over. Hopefully I've solved that. My turbine head seems very noisy and I'm thinking I probably should be wearing ear protectors. I thought maybe something is clogging it - I have cleaned the brushes on the turbine head a few times as my long hair is wrapping around the roller. I have removed it all but still very noisy and I'm feeling the suction isn't as good as it was the first day. My husband tried it and it was too loud for him and he operates our leaf blower with enthusiasm. The wand seems to be fastened properly. I do feel like it is a simple fix but I just can't find what it is.
When I vacuum carpet with my Dyson Big Ball it doesn't seem to pick up what is on the floor but instead seems to collect it then sucks it back out onto the floor. Any recommendations on how to stop this?
This is not to be expected and we are keen to assist.
