Has Dyson done it again? Unfortunately not!
I got the ‘Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde’ air purifier/heater/cooling device for free to test. Anyone who has read my reviews will notice that if it’s good, I’ll say so. If it’s not good, I’ll be just as straight with you.
When I was offered to review the Dyson, my first thought was “I could have used the air purifier during the recent bush fire season”. But like my dad used to say: “Better late than never!”
I already have the Dyson Outsize vacuum cleaner which is fantastic. I use it daily. With two fluffy cats, it's a must-have! It wo...rks really well and has never failed. I was expecting similar engineering magic with this device, especially since it costs $999. Anyone who was around in the 1970’s would have heard about formaldehyde. Formaldehyde was a chemical widely used in particle board, glue and many other products. Formaldehyde has been proven to cause headaches, nausea, skin irritation and, in the worst case, cancer. Dyson has created an air purifier that not only removes dust and allergens but also ‘destroys formaldehyde’ if present in the air. This is great news as furniture often releases formaldehyde years after it’s been made. Although formaldehyde is banned in particle wood (at least in Europe), some countries still use it. So, this feature will be of great use to those who want allergens and toxins removed from the air. So, let’s go through the unit step by step. It’s an air purifier/heater/cooling device. The unit captures 99.95% of particles as small as 0.1 microns, it meets HEPA H13 standard, destroys formaldehyde, it can rotate, it has a remote control, can be connected to your phone via Wi-Fi and it reports on air quality in your room on an app that you can download (it has a screen on the unit as well but I’ll get to that later). Apparently, it can purify the air in a room of up to 81m3 and heat a room of 35m3. The list of things that this device can do is outstanding. Did I say, the price is $999. Replacement filters cost $99.
Purchased in June 2021.
Questions & Answers
Can you run night mode on the heating setting? Can you reverse the airflow on the heating setting? I have this product and cannot do either.
Yes, you can certainly run night mode on the heating setting. The heater stays on, the LCD seems to dim a bit and the moon symbol appears on the LCD. Reversing on the heating setting seems to switch to cooling and reverses the air flow.
Hi DNR, sorry I haven't answered more quickly. domw is correct with the response already given. The night mode does allow for the heating and cooling settings to be used, changes over the airflow direction but if you use the higher level airflow outlet it changes from heating to cooling. If yours doesn't do this perhaps a call to customer service would be helpful. Be prepared to wait atm though they probably don't have full staff working (my call took around 20 minutes last week, 15 mins on hold but worth the wait the lady I spoke with was very good) Hope this is helpful.
While you can run the machine in night mode while heating, the display will dim but not completely turn off.
In terms of diffusing the airflow backwards, this is only available when the heater is not in use - heated air can't be diffused backwards.

The Dyson Purifier Formaldehyde Range detects formaldehyde in the air 500 times smaller than particles the size of 0.1 microns. that’s often found in new furniture, paint, glue, wallpaper and household cleaning products.
How does it work?
A solid-state formaldehyde sensor uses an electro-chemical cell to detect formaldehyde in the air. The special formaldehyde filter - the Selective Catalytic Oxidisation filter - then works to destroy formaldehyde, turning it into harmless water and carbon dioxide.
The formaldehyde filter is a lifetime filter, so it won’t need to be replaced for the life of the machine.
