Battery Life? 2 years and 4 months
Purchased Nov 22, 2018. Low usage in an apartment (which is fully vacuumed monthly by a cleaner with their own vacuum). I noticed that the battery capacity started to deteriorate after about 20 months, but this has accelerated to the point where the unit is all but useless. Of course now out of warranty, so I guess I'll junk it - $109 for a new battery every 2 years is simply unacceptable. Lithium batteries have a much better performance than that if they are properly manufactured and the charge/discharge cycle is properly controlled. Dyson...'s technology is clearly deficient. I would suggest that Dyson vacuums do not meet the Australian Consumer Legislation for fitness-for-purpose, but ACCC's in-box is overflowing. Just as well Dyson have backed out of their electric car plans.....

Battery life very poor and a "very dumb" battery charger
When it was new the battery run time was terrific, I was amazed at how much I could get done in Max power mode.
HOWEVER, after about a year the run time dropped a lot and after 20 months almost useless.
I checked the Operating Manual for info about battery warranty etc.
Guess what, battery run time is not covered by warranty at all.
But then I found this buried in the fine print in the Operating Manual:
"To help prolong battery life, avoid recharging immediately after a full discharge. Allow to cool for a few minutes."
So this high tech and expensive Dyson has a DUMB CHARGER!!!
I just assumed it would be SMART....

Very bad design fault, Dyson Australia refused to help
For it's retail price - it should definitely be better. I will stop buying Dysons and my next one will be, same as my robot vacuum - Xiaomi.
Many people complaint about battery life, and it is irritating when it does not last (I have replaced 2 original batteries). But it is something that happens a lot on other devices as well. So I could live with that.
But the fault that has rendered mine non functional is purely a design fault. On the top of the cyclone part there is a little red handle which one needs to pull up in order to empty the vac...uum. That little red handle is really thin and flimsy, I did not like it from the start. Eventually, just outside of the warranty it broke. I do not understand how Dyson or any vacuum cleaner manufacturer could design such a flimsy part. I am not an engeneer but from the very first day as soon as I touched it I could feel that it could easily brake in fingers from normal use. I called Dyson Australia and they told me that replacement part (the whole cyclone assembly) is $50. I tried to explain to them that they should replace it for free as it is a poorly designed part which should not be subjected to wear and tear. Dyson rep stated that that part "is not flimsy" and "is very sturdy". I could not get them to explain how it could have broken during normal use just from pulling it up with your fingers. I was not dropping it to the ground, was not using any tools on it, it just broke from me pulling it up. I do not think it is fair on me as a customer, I paid $700 for it in 2018. I expected it to last a little longer. It was only put through a very mild use in a small house.

The best investment ever
Having children and pets this Dyson is easily my favourite home appliance. My floors are mostly hardwood with some carpet areas. Cordless and super powered, it's a dream to use! Dyson for life.
Purchased at Myer.
Poor battery and low suction power
I have had my v8 for 3 years. For the last 12 months the max suction has not lasted longer than 30 seconds before the battery goes flat, in spite of following all cleaning and care instructions. The normal mode of suction is poor and does not vacuum my rug satisfactorily to pick up crumbs, and I don’t have a pet!
Poor value for money and I would not purchase a Dyson again.

Terrible battery life
Vaccuum only runs for 7 minutes on max after being fully charged overnight. Terrible value for money. Only would recommend if you have money to waste or if it’s on 90% off.

I bought the V8 Animal Extra as I have a 1-bedroom apartment with a mix of carpet and lino, and I have recently adopted a dog so I was on the hunt for a vacuum that could handle different flooring types while still picking up all the fur and dander from the pup. I am so impressed (and slightly horrified) at how much dirt this vacuum picks up! The first time I used it, I emptied the bin 4 times, even though the carpets looked clean at a glance. I also used the attachments to get all of my skirting boards, window sills and up in the corners of th...e ceiling, and cleaned the whole couch, all in one charge. I can do the whole apartment on high power and still have plenty of battery left. It even goes smoothly over my shaggy rug, picking up all crumbs and dust that are stuck in the fibres. I also bought a docking station and it is super handy. My only complaints are that it doesn't pick up bigger bits of dirt/food when the main large attachment is on, it just spins them around in the end and spits them back out, and it tangles longer fibres and hairs around the spinning mechanism so they need to be untangled when you finish vacuuming. These are minor inconveniences compared to the overwhelming positives of the unit, so I would still very much recommend it!

Regarding the comment: Great Product but for one thing
I too love my Dyson cordless, I also have an older Stowaway Dyson, Love them both. Cordess is so easy to use and very effective. I use on Carpet and wood floors, and have a small Tenterfield Terrior dog indoors. I was intrigued to read that someone else is getting a sore thumb when using the machine, I was getting a blister each time so now protect the area with some elastopast tape. I do not think it is the machine itself, but how I hold it that causes the rubbing.

when my ex leech bought this home i bawked at the price. 3 years later i clean my truck my house , everything with it and its awsome and very versatile. i had a problem with the battery they replaced it free of charge. since then no probs at all. just clean filters empty it and use it. i am going touring soon and plan to take it with me as it is a great product. and this is a truck driving bloke not a desk jocky or mommy .

Good except for the Battery
The family bought three units, Mothers day in 2018. First unit battery failed, replaced under 6 months. My unit gets used once a week and is charged on a timer, therefore not charged when hot. The battery failed at 14 months. This battery failed at 12 months. Filters have been cleaned. Not impressed.

I’ve had this vacuum for 2 weeks and used it twice. I’ve only used it on the lower setting so far and the suction is nowhere near as good as my 4 year old Vax which is extremely disappointing. Even worse is the fact that the dust only collects at the front of the bin & all attempts to shake the bin slightly to re-distribute the dust around the bin fail. The result is that I have to stop vacuuming every 2-3 minutes to empty the bin as the dust/lint quickly reaches the ‘max’ line in one small section of the bin. It turns a quick vacuuming job int...o a very long ordeal. In the end I gave up & got the old Vax out to finish the job. I tried emailing Dyson & even included a photo of the bin showing the issue & got a standard response that didn’t actually address my problem at all. I can’t believe I’ve just wasted $650!

Very good vacuum
I use this vacuum mostly on my carpet floors - it's a great way to clean up after my puppy.
It's lightweight and good value for money; a bit noisy but that's acceptable for me.

terrible product and battery life is no good.
I owned my Dyson stick vac for 3 days before returning.
I wanted to return my v8 due to battery overheating and power cutting out at 1m 30secs after charging 5 and a half hours.
The store manager has advised this is not a complete vacuum cleaner and only a spot cleaner. It is never intended to do small apartments.

used for my house, soft strung carpet, does the job of cleaning the mess after my kids. Long time dyson buyer, always top quality goods. Caught this on a bargain.
Not happy at all.. Beware of this product. Buy the LG Cordzero instead.
I purchased the V8 Absolute about 2 and a half years ago for around $800 (A huge amount of money for a vacuum cleaner) Initially is was good but then the battery died. I called Dyson and they sent me one under warranty but told me that this is likely to happen every 2 years or so and if need to pay for the next one, obviously I wasn’t happy to hear this. Now the connection that makes the rotating head function has failed and they’re asking me to pay $120 for another head unit. Will that need replacing every 2.5 years as well? It’s now ...an $800 ornament and I’m using my old vacuum cleaner again that I bought this to replace. Be very wary before buying this overhyped, overpriced, low quality machine. Buy the LG Cordzero if you’re looking, it’s a far superior machine.

As of December 2020, the Dyson V8 is the highest-rated cordless and stick vacuum cleaner on ProductReview. As well as being the highest rated, the V8 is also more afordable than other Dyson cordless and stick vacuum cleaners - such as the V11, which is around $300 more expensive.
- The V8 series includes 4 different vacuum cleaners, with a $100 difference in price
- Two power options: Max Mode for extra power, which is good for tough clumps of dirt or pet hair; and Powerful Mode, which allows for longer usage, but may provide a slighlty weaker suction
- A 5-hour charge provides up to 40 minutes of use
Points of praise:
- Some reviewers purchased the Dyson V8 after owning the V6 and reported noticing an improvement. Although they didn’t claim to be unhappy with the V6, many said that the V8 was more powerful and picked up a larger quantity of dirt and dust.
- The highest power setting (Max Mode) latest longer than expected. One reviewer was pleased that they could vacuum their whole apartment while still having plenty of battery life left.
- The vacuum was lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, meaning that people could clean hard-to-reach crevices and corners of the house.
- Three large, shedding dogs proved to be no match for this vacuum cleaner. A happy reviewer mentioned that they could finally remove the mess their dogs had left behind.
