My first ever robot vacuum so I didn't want expensive or anything too technical.
I bought a Deebot U2 pro.
It comes heaps of extras including pet cleaning accessories.
It is way simple to use for this old girl with no bells and whistles and I absolutely love it.
I have a 4 bedroom house all wood floors and 6 cats, it has no problem doing the lot before recharge battery drains in just over 2 hours on the normal mode. On low low suction it picks up everything including bits of litter. It has anti collision sensors so I don't have to run around picking up food/water bowls first.
I am surprised how quite it is.
I have not used the mop feature.
My floors look amazing ❤️❤️

Purchased in March 2022 at eBay for $378.

Ambassador Review

You never knew you needed one until you had one

Pros:
- vacuum is strong, handles our hardwood floors easily
- mopping feature I was skeptical with, it's great at just removing top layer dirt/dust, you still need to mop and scrub (with a toddler at home the floors are constantly covered in food)
- large vacuum storage meaning it can pick up a lot before needing to be emptied
- we have a Siberian Husky so the pet roller is amazing for this and works really well (no tangled brushes)
- lots of nice spare parts and extra mopping pads
- good battery life cleans on our 3x1 house easily (cleaning log says 62m2 on average it covers)

Cons:
- have tried several times to reduce the volume on the announcements but it seems to stay on even when muted, will try and play around with this more...

Read more- Wet mop after mopping you have to remember to remove it otherwise you'll end up with a wet patch on the floor not a big deal as you get used to remembering when you have mopped or not - took a bit to setup as our wireless internet was only 5ghz band and had to change to 4ghz to allow the vacuum to connect, this itself was a bit of a pain but figured out being relatively tech savy. We don't have a lot of home products to connect to though - our old vacuum has a remote which is actually really handy, but I appreciate others would also enjoy the app, not really a con or a pro but more of a comment as you don't get a remote and run everything through the app Last comments/recommendation: For the price and what you actually get I'm really impressed, our last robot vacuum was similarly priced, didn't mop, was smaller in size and worked in random patterns around the house. the Deebot U2 works in a pattern which is adjustable and also works with magnetic barriers (never testing this) and ensures it picks up lots of dirt. It isn't perfect and we knew what to expect having had one before. You will still need to vaccuum and mop, this isn't the solution to doing neither of these, but it does reduce the severity of the dirt in your home and reduces the amount you have to manually vacuum and mop. Overall I would recommend this vacuum to save time and hassles.

Not suitable for thick rugs

I was unsure as to whether this robot vacuum would be able to handle variable height rug and floor surfaces but decided to give it a shot as I was offered one to test (and who doesn't want to outsource their vacuuming?) - unfortunately the outcome was not great - it doesn't move between surface heights and textures very well, and often would get stuck and need to be picked up and re-placed on a higher/longer pile rug (our home has several rugs of different types and textures on top of floorboards). The thick plaited fringe on one Moroccan wool ...

Read morerug was especially problematic, but even when I tucked that fringe under it didn't go well, as that then created a lump that the cleaner couldn't properly clear. It also tended to run into the same obstacles repeatedly, so that did get quite annoying if you were in the same room (there's not much point to having a 'robot' vacuum if you have to go rescue it all the time and it doesn't learn intelligently). I've never tried a robot vac before, and for my situation with many rugs it's probably not a great solution in any case, but I've read that higher-spec'd models have mapping to make sure they cover your whole floor area - this one, being a cheaper version, doesn't, so it doesn't learn your house and you can't guarantee it's been everywhere. I didn't try the mopping function as it's not really suited to my home. Where it did manage to vacuum I found the amount of dust/debris collected to be much less than my Dyson V10 - when I went over the just-cleaned area with my Dyson it still filled up (a lot), highlighting what the Deebot had missed, even though the rugs looked clean. So in that regard I think you'd probably want to do a 'just in case' thorough weekly manual vacuum if you have carpets, even if you used this in between. Especially if like me you have pets who shed. Overall I found this machine to require too much manual intervention to live up to its 'robotic' promise, and with all the niggles I encountered it was more annoying than useful. I think if you live in a home with low-pile carpets or smooth hard floors and minimal obstacles this might be an ok solution - although realistically, I think even then it's probably just more efficient and straightforward to just grab a regular vacuum and clean your house once and properly whenever it needs doing.

Packaging: Well packaged, no excessive amounts of plastic, most materials if not all are recyclable.

Accessories: Two spare filters, one for dustbin, one for mop head. One reusable mop cover, easy to clean under the tap with warm water. Two spare side brushes for the vacuum that I estimate will need replacing within 3 to 6 months of solid use give or take. Two vacuuming heads, one for normal use, one for pet hair.

Instructions: Excellent instruction manual with images. Plain easy to understand language with plent...

Read morey of videos also available online. The manual includes five other languages than English. Setup: Easy to install brushes and waste bin/mop bin. Same goes for using the mop/dustbin option. The pet kit cleaning head is simple to install/swap with the normal vacuum head.

I was invited to review this item, the Ecovacs Deebot U2 Series Robotic Vacuum Cleaner, as part of the productreview.com.au Ambassadors' program and am able to keep the product post review.

The model I received is equipped with the charging station but does not include the automatic emptying facility.

Read moreanuals. It was very simple to unbox and putting it together was intuitive without any initial reference to the manual. Setting up the app was a bit tricky to start with – I have a iPhone 6S Plus and it needed a tweak (Sign out of App Store and back in again) to get it working. Apparently, owners of iPhone 10X upwards would have no issue. It is a shame it does not support 5G as signing into the 2.4 G is a bit annoying. The first step is just to get used to the potential of this live-in maid and get it to work for you. It will create a map as its first task. Be sure to turn on the machine (in the docking station) and then charge it.

Works better than I thought

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

It’s a robot vac. They all look pretty much the same, save for the skins you can buy that gives it absolutely awful graphics (options range from an orange, to the British flag and Spongebob). The one provided to me by Product Review (thank you to the team) for this ambassador review is the sleek black model that came with plenty of accessories to get you up and running.

BOX CONTENTS

The Deebot U2 Pro comes with:
- Standard brush installed, which I’ve been testing the unit on
- TWO dust containers, one of which comes integrated with a water tank...

Read more- Four rotary brushes (i.e. 2 sets) - One tangle free pet brush - One microfibre washable mopping pad - A pile of disposable mopping pads A rather comprehensive ensemble, quite impressive honestly being the two different dust containers provided to suit your intended purpose. If you just want to vacuum, choose the dedicated dust compartment with a larger capacity, rather than sacrificing the storage volume for water. SETUP Set up was reasonably easy. My cat could probably set it up if he was still around. Plug the charger in, turn the unit on, place it onto the dock for that initial charge, and then start setting up your phone in preparation. Ecovacs provides their ECOVACS HOME app available on both the App Store and Google Play. I’m using the Android variant but won’t expect much difference with the iOS equivalent. The app guides you through the setup process including pairing the phone with the device, and then getting the device itself to connect to your home WiFi. In case this affects anyone, please note that the device can only communicate with 2.4GHz networks. DEVICE PERFORMANCE I’ve never owned a robot vacuum before so I come with no prior expectations of this unit. It started off doing very inefficient diagonal laps that as a human, just looks illogical, but after the initial pass, the vacuum then learns the shape of your house and will start taking on more logical routes. With these autonomous devices, it is always amusing to see it stumble and look lost, but that feeling of amusement soon turns into frustration as you realise that this factor is what separates an actual autonomous machine from… well, a fancy gimmick. If you have to rescue the unit every time it goes out on a run because it gets snagged, it dramatically reduces the benefits of autonomy, because, well then… it’s not. The Deebot U2 Pro senses its surroundings by bumping into objects and registering obstacles in that sense. However, it does seem to manage where walls are sometimes without actually hitting them. Hard to tell how detection mechanism works exactly, but one thing it certainly couldn’t seem to detect are shoes and slippers. I have had on every occasion, the robot attempting to mount my slippers and my shoes. And then cry for help. And then once you lift them away, it attempts to mount that very shoe immediately. Not one for learning much. On one occasion, it even managed to snag my shoe bag with a pair of shoes inside with its rotary arms and was dragging the entire bag across the room. Quite powerful and determined, I guess. In terms of vacuuming, I’ve deliberately refrained from pulling out the Bissell. I have a 4 yr old that makes an absolute mess when eating, so by every evening, there will be grains of rice, scraps of cereal, crumbs of bread, kernels of corn, etc readily available on the floor. The unit itself seems to have no issue with picking any of these up on a standard setting, and with the mopping function, the floor tiles look decently cleaned. Unfortunately, Ecovacs does not appear to rate the suction power of this vacuum with an actual metric, so I can only assume that it is not an impressive figure to disclose. At the time of writing, JB HiFi seems to have the non-pro version listed at 1600Pa. Not sure where they got this metric from, but perhaps it is a guide. However, I’d say you can definitely let the Deebot take over the general maintenance duties, and then save the deep cleans for the rare occasions. It should still save you a ton of work. Theoretically. If you don’t have to repeatedly rescue it from shoes, that is. Mopping is a great feature and a major selling point, so it works wonderfully on houses that only have hard floors. If you have carpets as well, that’ll complicate things. The mopping feature is not designed for carpets. I’m sure you wouldn’t appreciate the unit dragging effectively a wet wipe across the carpets yourself. The carpet might even snag the dirt from the mopping plate instead. Unfortunately, the device doesn’t detect carpets, so it’ll go right on into a carpeted area with no hesitation. In situations like these, you might choose to stick to vacuum-only mode and install the extra large dust container provided, or cordon off the carpeted areas with magnetic strips and get the device to run on the hard floors only. I won’t be marking the unit down for this issue; it’s just the nature of the design. The only alternative is to greatly exaggerate the complexity of the mechanics so that it detects carpet and retracts the wet mop away, but that’ll surely blow up the price of these things. APP USABILITY The ECOVACS HOME app, at least for this particular vacuum model, is very basic in features. It makes the app feel empty. There are limited functions to select from, with pretty much no manual controllability. I was about to make a criticism that it is only a few lines of code away from providing the user with the resulting map of the house, so that you can have better control such as targeting the spot cleans on your phone rather than having to plonk the device where you want it to spot clean, but then I noticed some of their higher ended models appears to have this level control, so it’s not that Ecovacs developers are inexperienced; they just have a crafty marketing department to provide the right features at the right price. Then again, this is a device aimed for convenience. You would ideally want to set a schedule and never touch the app. Your interaction with it should only be when you empty the dust container and fill it up with water every few uses (varies by household and living conditions, of course). The app is very handy in recommending when you should change the replaceable parts. LIKES - Cleaning power is adequate and does the job, even at standard seting - Good, basic device suitable for automated cleaning applications - Straightforward setup procedure - Parts appear to be easy to source (available on eBay at the very least) - Comes with everything you need - Good features offering at this price point* - Robot is cloud-based. You can be overseas and still interact with the unit as long as you have an internet connection. NOT-SO-LIKES - … It’s cloud-based. Your phone interacts with the unit via the Ecovacs servers through the internet, irrespective your phone and unit residing on the same local network. So if your internet cuts out, you cannot even open the app, let alone interact with the unit at all. Unsure if the scheduling is affected by network connection. Can’t see why Ecovacs developers won’t store the scheduling information on the unit itself, so my guess is it’ll probably work. However, no hard promises. But potentially, if Ecovacs goes bankrupt, you’re left with a fancy paperweight… in a progressively paperless world. - Poor obstacle detection; gets snagged constantly. Only truly autonomous if your house is very tidy. Nothing on the floor that you don’t intend on seeing in the dust container. - Manual recommends clean water only; no availability of detergents and sanitisers. VERDICT It’s difficult to determine one at the moment without actually knowing the recommended retail price. My best estimate would be around $499 from your common retailers when it becomes available. Based on this assumption, I’d say the features provided at this price point is very fair. The device works remarkably well in general (just don’t throw the Bissell out for the occasional deep clean), with the only major drawback being snags on smaller obstacles that the developers should have been mindful of and calibrated the sensors for. Other than that, I currently have mine set to mop every late evening and plan on getting the magnetic strips so that it doesn’t try to mop my carpeted rooms. I’ll have to do the carpets manually every now and then. Yeah, I’d still buy it – provided my price assumption is reasonably accurate. WHY WOULD YOU BUY THIS? This product is suitable if you’re just after: - A robot that automatically cleans the floors on its own. - Your living arrangements are much tidier than mine Another contender to look into would be the Eufy RoboVac G10 Hybrid for the same price point*. I can’t say one is better than the other; you’ll need to assess which one is more suited to your situation. Here’s a brief comparison: - The G10 automatically remembers where it left off if it needs to go back to base to recharge. - The U2 has a bigger battery and a much longer runtime so it probably doesn’t need to go back to base to recharge in the first place - The G10 has a quieter noise rating and a stronger suction rating of 2000pa. - The G10 has a height of 72mm, the U2 is slightly disadvantaged at 79mm Based on my personal situation, I’d probably prefer the U2 due to the bigger battery anyway. At a height advantage of only 7mm difference, I don’t have anything the G10 can suddenly get under that my U2 cannot. *as of this review, the Ecovacs Deebot U2 Pro isn’t offered in Australia by any major or reputable retailer. Price estimate derived from other shopping websites and may be very different to the RRP set by Ecovacs.
