The greatest time saving appliance I have been gifted

We use this both on Wooden & carpeted floors. It's brilliant on both. We have a dog, so it's brilliant to run every day. Love the fact it goes under the bed! So affordable

Read moreThe first thing I have learnt from a little reading is that there are different levels of features and capability according to price. That is the usual situation with appliances. You pay more for more features. The top of the range by Ecvacs sells for up to $1300, and the model tested standard U2 sells for around $300 The set-up of the U2 was relatively easy when you download the Eocvas app and follow the steps. It involves connecting the unit via your 2G wi-fi network. This is all done via the app. The app allows you to start, pause and have the device return to the charger. There seem to be many features of the app that are only usable with the higher specification models. You can set schedules for when you want it to start cleaning. I controlled its, start, pause and return to the charging dock from the app. It seems that ‘mapping’ is one of the big features of a robot vacuum cleaner that really make difference. Mapping allows the device to remember where it has been on its vacuuming journey around the home. Mapping allows you to target certain areas of the house. You can also make it avoid areas. Without mapping, the device is likely to go back over where it has been several times. The U2 doesn’t have this mapping technology, so it will go wherever it wants. When I used the U2, it spent a lot of time under the television unit - which meant it often got tangled with cords. It also spent a lot of time under the bed. That was good because it cleaned an area that doesn't usually get cleaned. And judging from the dust bin, it really sucked up a lot of dirt and dust. But that’s not where you want it to be every time you use it. In reality, you want to be able to start the device and let it clean the whole house in a methodical way. Without the extra mapping technology, you don’t get that. Starting the device via the app sends it on its way from the docking station. Think when you put the docking station, as this will make a difference when you want the device to return to the docking station to recharge. My home is a two-bedroom apartment with two bathrooms. The kitchen and lounge area are hard flooring, and the bedrooms are carpeted. The bathrooms are tiled. The U2 works its way around, using its infrared sensor to just stop short of walls and major obstacles on most occasions. On other occasions, its bumpers might touch the legs of chairs or other obstacles, and then it will swivel around and go forward or backwards until it gets a clear run. The device did get stuck on the rounded steel bar base of stools, and that, as well as power cables, were the only real issues with obstacles. The device went from floor to carpet or over a carpet map with ease, as it did with a slight incline on the tiles into the bathroom. I felt it worked well on both the hard floor as it did on the carpet. It has a couple of small brushes protruding from each side of the device, which can direct dirt into the spinning brush under the device, which picks things up. That can be cleaned, and you might have cut some of the rubbish out of the brush with scissors. It seems to go in a straight line up and back the floor space in open areas, but mostly it will go in no predictable direction. The suction seems adequate to clean most floors. I wouldn’t think it is strong as a Dyson handheld. But that’s not the comparison we are making. The dust bin is easy to empty. It lifts out of the compartment that pulls out of the device. You can’t really ensure it will go where you want to in a timely The somewhat difficult process to return to the charging dock, especially if it’s in a different I didn’t use the wet mop process because it didn’t seem worth setting up. You can only use water - no cleaning products, and can’t go on the carpet. So it’s a limitation. I would only want it to clean up dirt and dust. Mopping the floor properly with a bucket and mop still seems the way to go. Overall, if you want the entry-level robot vacuum cleaner for less than $400, the Deebot U2 will do the job, But you need to accept its limitations.

Thanks for the opportunity. I do realise that you if people want more features that you need to but a higher spec model. That's reasonable and understandable. But as no doubt know, it's a good entry-level model.

I received the Ecovacs DEEBOT U2 as part of the ambassador program.

Packaging:
I was quite impressed with the way everything was fit into a compact package with no wasted space. The whole box was slightly larger than two pizza boxes stacked together, with every corner filled with parts or accessories. You get the robot, charging station, side brushes, a reusable cleaning cloth and its plate, and an instruction manual. You need to attach the two side brushes and let it recharge for a few hours and it’s ready to use. Pay attention to side brushe...

Read mores as they are colour coded. Also, weird as it might sound, the robot won’t recharge unless you turn it on using a big button on its side. First thoughts: The vacuum cleaner looks like a one of those tiny robots you see in movies. Flash white, with a big square button to start cleaning on top, and a tiny Wi-Fi indicator light next to it. The front half of the robot sports a rubber bumper to soften the impacts if it runs into anything, but the bumper is a little short and if you’ve got tables on castors, you’ll see the robot headbutting the legs sometimes. Above the bumper, there is a big infrared sensor, not unlike Cylons’ eyes in Battlestar Galactica… While it’s not necessary to install the app and connect the robot to your Wi-Fi network, the companion app is useful to monitor the status while the robot is vacuuming or mopping the floor. I was getting ready to spend a lot of time pairing the robot with my phone, but to my surprise everything went smoothly, and I could control the robot on my phone within 30 seconds. The only disappointment was lack of support for 5GHz Wi-Fi, which is somewhat understandable as you’re not going to stream 8k videos on your vacuum cleaner. The robot has voice prompts which will tell you what’s happening, such as charging, start / stop, and returning to base. While the prompts sound happy, they are very formal and somewhat disappointing. I would have used something like "Can't you see me?" instead of "Here! I'm ready to start." in response to Find My DEEBOT command. The volume is set to too high by default, but luckily, it’s easily adjustable inside the companion app. You can also change the voice prompt language if you prefer. Initial charge for me took about 4 hours. I guess the battery on this unit must have been flat. To start charging the unit, you just need to drop it on top the docking station and two large contacts take care of the rest. As I mentioned above, don’t forget to turn it on or it won’t recharge.

Purchased in January 2022.

I have to admit - I'm a bit disappointed.

Even though I have always wanted a robot vacuum cleaner I have never had one so I don't have anything to compare this to. I've got a 25 square house with 4 bedrooms and 2 living areas. The front of the house has quite a long hallway with 2 bedrooms. laundry and a living area leading off it. The back of the house on one side is the kitchen, meals and family room and on the other side are 2 bedrooms, bathroom and toilet. Read more instructions on using the robot to be fairly useless. Virtually non existent. It's been a case of trial and error. After charging the U2 I set it into motion from the app. I had placed the charger in the bedroom at the rear of the house so that was it's starting point. It did half of that room without attempting to do the edges. It proceeded out of the doorway and passed the toilet and bathroom and went into the other bedroom. From there it went half way up the hallway at the front of the house but turned around without going to the end. It went into one bedroom at that end of the house and the living room but missed the front bedroom and the laundry. In the hallway it only did the centre without doing the edges. Having a long haired dog in the house it's the edges that need doing the most. It then proceeded to go back to one of the bedrooms it had previously done and went around it and under the bed numerous times completely missing the kitchen, meals and family room. This took about 90 minutes when it announced it was going back to charge. It found it's way back to the charger. The next clean which was a vacuum again, I wondered if the charger should be more central in the house so it could find all the room so I moved it and started the clean from there. This time it did clean the front bedroom, multiple times under the bed, and found it's way to the kitchen and family area where it got caught on the long pile rug. I expected that may be an issue. Again, after running approx. 90 minutes it announced it was returning to the charger. This time it returned to the original location of where the charger had been. After both uses the collection bin was almost full but it is quite small. Using the mopping feature when I worked it out, it didn't seem to mop very well. I was surprised there isn't a switch or something to change from vacuum to mop. To mop I had to close off all the carpeted rooms. I haven't bothered mopping since. I found it quite a bit of effort to have to move everything out of the way before starting to vacuum. For me I find it easier to move things as I go when using the stick vacuum or my larger vacuum cleaner. I would compare the clean to the clean I would get using a stick vacuum. To use the U2 as your main vacuum cleaner I think you'd be buying filters and the cloth pads frequently. The brushes did cope well with the long dog hair which is similar to long human hair, it did wrap around and they kept rotating. Ideally I'd like to be able to activate a robot cleaner to clean when I'm out of the house but with the U2 I wouldn't know which rooms had been done and which hadn't or I'd come home to find it stuck on the rug. One charge with a 90 minute run time wouldn't do the entire house even if it did find it's way around.
