100% online help with taxes
Highly user-friendly website
So silly to use credit card 2 times and I was under the impression that I paid up front to find out you wanted a further payment to lodge . Why 2 payments
Never doing tax with this company again.
They calculated and lodged my tax return incorrectly. A mistake that was going to cost me a large amount in tax payable. I had a feeling something was not quite right so i asked them questions to get some clarity. I felt their response was very careless considering the financial repercussions their mistake would have had for me. A tax company that can't do tax is unacceptable. I am now questioning whether my previous tax returns with them were correct?
Slow but steady decline
I have used E-tax accountants for about a decade or so 2020 will be the last time. I can honestly say the quality of who you speak to has dropped immensely, the deduction suggestions have dropped, the price has increased, they don't explain anything very well and I don't believe you get the multiple checks over your return anymore.
I've had different accountants tell me contradicting information. One guy told me 'you can't do X, it will result in an audit' and the next week a different accountant told me to 'do X, you'll be fine'. I'd like to ...
Overcharged and will not respond to messages
Edit: After posting this review they finally contacted me and fixed the issue.
Charged me the fee for businesses when I am an individual. Have sent them three messages regarding this, the first being 3-4 weeks ago and the most recent being 8 days ago. They have not responded.
Real or fake?
You can tell if reviews are fake or not. They are often one short, vague paragraph and often contain one spelling or a basic grammar mistake to make it look genuine. You'll see lots of these for etax (and companies like Youi). So I was dubious about using this service, but pressed on regardless. Their set up and interface is excellent. It is a really easy to follow system, which the ATO should "borrow". It helps people who have never done their own tax before navigate what can be a daunting task. I used this service years ago and was glad I did...as an introduction to "how to do taxes". This is sadly not taught in schools, but should be. If you have basic tax deductions, then it is easy to do it yourself on etax or the ATO. For complex tax I would suggest using an accountant. Etax act like most professions, they give you the least amount of info and rarely answer your questions so that they don't give away the tools and info you need to do the tax return yourself. But if you don't submit and keep asking your questions you'll eventually get an answer. The ATO data matches most things these days so it's worth going onto mygov and accessing the ATO from there to see what they know and if you have forgotten anything. The ATO also made it impossible to get an end of year 'payment summary' direct from your employer and in doing so forces you to see an accountant or look on mygov. When I went with etax I was asked to scan in and save lots of receipts. Then I was asked to scan in even more! As a person that doesn't mind paying taxes and has all the necessary receipts I found this time consuming and cumbersome. If I had gone to an accountant in person I could have easily shown them. Etax didn't answer my questions for ages so the return just sat idle for weeks. I don't believe any reviews or advertising that states it took 30 minutes to complete a tax return. It takes a long time to go through receipts and tally deductions. Most accountants these days expect you to make your own spreadsheets, which is fine, but give yourself a full day or so to check for possible deductions. If you are lazy, your return will be minimal. I would suggest doing etax for one year to see what you can deduct, then do it yourself in subsequent years on mygov.
ATO's myTAX and eTAX are about the same return
I calculated the return with eTAX alongside the ATO's myTAX. Although eTAX estimated an extra $26 than myTAX (entering exactly the same details into both sites) myTAX don't charge a fee for using them. So, by the time eTAX get me the extra $26, minus the cost of using them (~$65 or more), I get more in my pocket by using the the ATO's myTAX.
Do not answer questions
They have no problem asking you a million questions and expect an answer ASAP but cannot answer any of yours. You have to ask multiple times and get a brief reply that only half answers your questions. Would not use this service again.
Not as easy as you think and no reponse to question
After my partner and I receiving many pestering emails to complete my return (didn't stop even after I email to explain we were waiting on some additional paperwork) when I completed the process my estimate dropped by almost $300. When I emailed to ask why I was ignored and received more pestering messages to pressures into lodging, which I did as it had turned into a long drawn out process. Yes they are cheaper but you get what you pay for. Will not be returning to them next year owing to bad service and security concerns around personal data.
Has been great in the past this year not so good in response
Very hard the get feedback from account
It seems as they are understaffed as every step takes a long time for response, I could have physically visted an accountant and have had it dealt with there and then but this process has already taken over a week and only just finalized, still waiting for payment which is expected
Waste of time
From an estimate of 6k went down to 3k without even explain why. If you are a tradie stay away from this. Waste of time.
Support team appear so to be inexperienced and are unable to answer questions/provide appropriate an
Perhaps this might be a good service for someone who just needs to do a straight tax return, but then again, you don't really need a service for that. You can just go on the ATO website and lodge there. I had a number of questions and tried to use 2 of their chat service people and someone on their phones. I was given unclear answers, put on hold multiple times while they had to check with superiors/team leaders. Finally I was provided information that I believe was not factual (I did a check on it later). I have decided to go elsewhere. I lost faith in the service. It really feels like I was speaking to students or very junior employees.
Masquerading as the Tax Office
When a person googles ETax it should come up with the ATO service not a private company. I didn't realise till the final steps that you weren't the ATO and that I had wasted my 90+ dollars on you guys when I had done all the work myself. Shame on you!
Ok in the beginning, now don’t listen and shout at customer s
I’ve been using etax for a few years and no real issues, apart from them not listening or reading email properly and and a thought on my part most of the work was done O/S ( they say no).
This year I had to do a tax return from 2012 and aware it was very late (I was working in Singapore for many months and did not get around to it). The ATO had apparently sent reminders via etax, which I did not read, because they had been driving me insane with their marketing. The spam had toned down after I complained, but their emails still go to junk. ...So after the letter from the ATO to my home address, I did the tax return, but could not find my PAYG summary (same employer 10years) and my employer had changed systems and could not help. I advised etax and asked the to help look for it. I was aware the ATO get and keep the summaries, so no big deal ( I rang up the ATO and got my income/tax details, before completing the tax return) Except etax decided I did not earn any money in 2012 and without any authority summited to the ATO I did not work. They claim to have contacted the ATO, I rang the ATO to find out what was going on and told I was the only person to query my info this year. Hmmm So, more than about 10 emails, several chat sessions and 2 phone calls, etax still tell me I did earn any money in 2012. Frustration beyond belief. Finally, after my last email saying I don’t know who they were talking to but it’s not the ATO. A day later, and I can only say they most arrogant, patronizing man called me and was shouting at me (yes shouting at me) as soon as he confirmed who I was and saying it’s not their fault and the ATO has no info for that year. The story changed during the call to don’t have to will not provide the info, but I have no idea of the truth. I did not yell back, I just said I included how much I made and tax, send that ( I had already paid etax and did not want to lose my money). After some more agrivation, finally he agreed to send my updated tax return, but I should expect the ATO will sent back, you guessed it, because I did not earn any money and they have not information. After calling the ATO 3 times, I know they do.
Why pay them when you do all the work
I got caught with e-tax being top on google, thinking it was the ATO. I had to fill in all the details then they want $69 to lodge the return. I cancelled my log-in - still waiting for confirmation from e-tax and found the ATO my tax website. All the information is already included and it doesn't charge for the service. Why pay this e-tax mob when you do all the work when my tax (ATO) puts in all the information for nothing. Incidentally both came up with the same refund.
Poor performance not recommended
Etax is easy to use however you will get a much better return from an actual tax agent. Etax accountants are not interested in maximising your return and for the price your business is better taken elsewhere.

If you get stuck or aren't sure what to enter at this section, please just connect with us on Live Chat (in the bottom right of your return) or send a secure message using the envelope icon at the top of your tax return and one of our accountants can help ensure you have everything in the right spot.
