Can live without it
Didn't realize till I got home from shop I needed to go back to buy usb cable. Then discovered that I had to download alerts..free for i month then $30 to buy. Tried to download free trial but being in my early 70's found it impossible. Garmin downloaded it via my computer and still didn't work.
Have returned it to shop as "Karen" pronunciation of streets impossible to understand eg Mc Conville St==Micon vill st, Watson St = Wahson St,
Bargara Rd =Buggerrra Rd.
It is no wonder she gets lost, had we not known where to go it would have been a ...

Excellent, Simple to use.
After previously owning a TomTom GPS which was nothing but trouble, I decided to give Garmin a go.
I chose the Nuvi-40 model as I wanted a simple basic unit.
So far, in the 5mths I've owned it this GPS has been excellent, hasn't given me any troubles & has never gotten me lost.
Some of the sofware features are pretty handy too ie:
*Locate nearest Police station, hospital, servo, places of interest & your current location(in co-ordinates & street address), choose to find a route to avoid tolls.
But the main feature I really like is the loud, continuous beep the GPS gives when you get near a speed camera or mobile speed camera zone.

Strange I had a Nuvi and dumped it for a far better TOMTOM. Everyone to their own I guess
easy to use not as good as my old tom tom was and now has lines through screen not real impressed not worth the money.
Find out how Garmin nüvi Essential Series compares to other GPS Navigation Systems
Know better, choose better.

Not very useful for Australia
As an owner of three other Garmin GPS units I had high hopes of this one.
It comes with a lifetime upgrade, which is great, I also have this upgrade with one other Garmin unit and its really good. So whats wrong with this unit..... Well, I`m a rep on the road and do 1000s Km a week and guess what, I wear sunglasses. The new units have an awful color scheme, white roads on a kinda grey/green background which is near impossible to see in sunlight with the sunnies on. ( My other units have dark roads on a white background which are really easy ...

User friendly GPS
Needed a new GPS that was straight-forward, inexpensive and easy to use. The Nuvi 50 meets all of these requirements, coupled with a lifetime (of the GPS, not yours) map. In particular, my wife wanted a simple to use GPS that just got her from a to b without a whole lot of bells and whistles. I was able to get just the model, with the large screen so it's easier to see, for a very competitive price at No Frills, who delivered very promptly and did a follow up inquiry to make sure everything was okay.
Easy to use - intuitive, large screen, competitively priced

I'm considering replacing my existing Garmin with a GPS that includes "Free Lifetime Map Updates".
A number of published "User Reviewers" complain bitterly that "Free Lifetime Map Updates" come with...
I haven't struck a problem, but maybe I'm just not really noticing if it's there. I don't think they have the ads though, even though I haven't done an update for some time, it all seemed pretty smooth.

Don't buy it unless you like getting the run around!
I tried this gadget around familiar areas to practice using it... Well thank goodness i did or i would have had no idea i was being lead on a wild goose chase! It takes you on routes that have the most turns, round abouts and kilometers possible. Yes i have adjusted the settings which made no difference. So far it has never chosen the most direct route or roads with the highest speed limit. The speed limit indicator is inaccurate on roads that have held the same speed limit for years. I am very disappointed with this product and reluctant to tr...
Read morey it in unfamiliar territory. I will be returning it to the place of purchase as it does not match the product description. Routes are lengthy with many turns, round abouts and low speed limits. Inaccurate speed limit indicator1 comment
I find it is pretty good. Every now and then it takes you round and round, totally lost. The only problem I really have with it is that it doesn't give you the big map so that you can make sure the ...
Read moretrack you are taking is the one you want. I had a Binetone and a Tom Tom and they give you the big map. I like the way this Garmin lets you know if you are speeding.Questions & Answers

Doesn't Garmin have much support? I noticed all the Navman queries were responded to by Navman support staff, whereas I don't see any Garmin staff responses to the Garmin queries. This is worrying.... may help me in deciding my next gps I think.

Read more be excellent. Amused by the pronunciation of some of the street names which I knew (I mean, who pronounces "water" as "watter"?) but it always there in large text (thankfully) on the screen for confirmation. Quibble about the street number is shared. Maybe haven't drilled down to the "how to use" detail yet but would like to just get a town location rather than having to nominate a street and number. Lack of USB cable was a tad irritating as well and lack of hard copy manual was disappointing. Overall though, this GPS newbie would rate it a 4/5. And it saved our marriage!(said the Navigator).
