High Tec Low Performance
I have to wonder why in this day and age my Google Chromecast regularly (at least once a fortnight) stops functioning and I have to go through a range of primitive switching and re-booting to get it to come online again.
I have seen military blokes sitting in a booth thousands of kilometres away remotely fire a rocket and precisely destroy their target but my google chromecast has problems remotely connecting to my laptop one metre away.
Never works, sub standard compared to Apple tv
I went from an Apple TV, no problems, worked well, to this product that hardly ever connects to me devices. Glitched, that require me everyday to reset the item. The worst desicion I have made, in particular when mirroring. Google company should be ashamed of themselves to have a device that works at low standard. Please do your self a favour and don't buy this product, it's no good.

Always loses connection
I’ve owned my ultra for about a week now. On the same network I have an old Panasonic PVR that supports Netflix and an old Sony Bravia TV that has some smart apps. The chromecast is ALWAYS losing connection to wifi, and when I plug it into the network It just fails completely. Regularly the Google home app on my phone won’t be able to find the chromecast, until I power cycle the chromecast. Netflix on iOS is always losing the connection and failing to cast.
When I do manage to get Netflix playing, it often gets stuck at 99%. After five minut...es I just power cycle the chromecast to try again. You might think this is due to my home network problems, but I have a Google Home, multiple iPads and iPhones, and the two video devices right next to the chromecast and they all work flawlessly. I’m in IT and I’ve set up a wireless mesh network around my house and I get excellent signal speeds. When it does work however, it’s nice just to be able to say “hey Google, turn on the TV!“ The screensavers are pretty and I like having the date and weather on the television. I would like to see more apps available.
Stay far away!
My chromecast continues to reboot as I am streaming. I cannot even get in 5 minutes of watch time. This issue started about over a week ago. I rebooted the device as well as did a factory reset and now the problem is even worse! Now I am not even able to connect to the device. I contacted customer support and the representative laughed at my issue and was not sympathetic to my issue. The support agent did not fix my problem and only made me run around the house disconnecting and restarting everything when the issue is with the chromecast itself..., not my wifi or cellphone. I am extremely disappointed in the product as well as the customer service I will not be buying again and will stop everyone from buying this device. I suggest a roku or fire stick. There’s no happy casting with chromecast.
Cheomecast only good at streaming media
I work in IT so I'm quite familiar with operating gadgets and electronic devices. I recently bought the 2018 model (3rd gen). It's good at streaming media content from mobile phones, PC and laptops but it fails miserably at mirroring from PC and laptop because the mouse and keyboard input lag is really bad.
I have an older miracast dongle dongle that has no lag for mouse/keyboard, although it buffers quite a lot when streaming media.
Also with old miracast dongle I can easily mirror my screen from pc, laptop and mobile without installing ...any app. But to use Chromecast you need to use Google home app on your mobile or Chrome browser from your laptop or desktop to start mirroring. All in all, I'm not happy with the way Chromecast operates. It's not working as a wireless display. It has so much lag for mouse and keyboard that makes desktop mirroring painful. It's almost useless for desktop mirroring. So if you're after mirroring from desktop, look elsewhere. If you're mirroring from mobile then buy the Chromecast.

Not great system wouldn't bother
There really isn't a standard anymore chromecast yet another poorly executed product! It really doesn't do the job! Every single program needs to support it, constant issues trying to get a simple video playing. Thought $60 to make a dumb tv smart was good idea, HA. The same goes with apple airplay standard.
Hit and a miss
It's nice when it works,
PRO's:-instant wireless streaming
- can work dreat with voice command if you have google home device.
- can stream from phone and Pc's
Con's:- BUT i have been having constant issues with the connection.
- video is always jittering and missing frames.
- its drops resolution ( i am getting about 6 mbps net speed), but even when things are working fine on my pc it drops resolution in streaming and still misses frames.
- some times connection just dops but its very very rare.
Backdrop data usage is the killer - if you have limited data usage
I've owned a chromecast for a while and never had any problem with it as a casting device.
The problem is the amount of background data it uses when you are not actually viewing anything.
Like many aussies I'm on wireless broadband (our ADSL gave out and NBN seems to still be years away, so our only option is 4G broadband.) Because we're on a metered limited download every Gigabyte counts, and if you leave the Chromecast plugged in when you're not using it (as kids always do), it uses a horrible amount of data downloading the hi-res pictu...res every 30 seconds that you see on the TV screen (if the TV is on.) Even if the TV is off or being used for free to air, the data is still used. On a monthly basis, the picture downloads can be up to 20GB - which is a lot if you are on a 100GB download limit. I've asked on the Google support forums how the backdrop downloading can be turned off. The short answer is that it can't be turned off, and (even though it would be a trivial software change) Google have no plans to fix it. I've had to put the Chromecast in a drawer and forget about it - will look at other devices as an alternative.
Keeps shutting down
My Chromecast keeps shutting down after 20 mins..seems to be a big problem on the forams. A lot of people are complaining. Some shut down after 2 mins.. Don't buy until google can fix the problems. I have tried a lot of fixes. Don't buy one until google can fix the problem.
This doesn't really deliver on it's promises. It doesn't stream netflix very well and 'crashes' itself if we stop netflix at the wrong time and try to watch something else. It is also not that compatible with other 'on demand' services, so we have similar problems with it 'crashing', getting stuck or not working. The sound is also very poor and it is hard to hear the content yet I'm not sure if this is a chromecast issue or a netflix issue. However, It is best for Youtube and the quality is exceptional for this. That said, I am so unhappy w...ith it, we have to try Telstra TV to see if we get any improvement on these issues. There is nothing worse than stopping a show and then having to spend the next 10 to 15min trying to get the stupid thing to work again by unplugging it and replugging it in to the TV. Very primitive.
google chrome cast sucks I bought it so that I could wirelessly stream stuff and watch netflix off my computer to my tv but it changes the quality of the video/movie/image I am watching. I Would definitely not recommend anyone buying a Google Chrome cast it is not worth the money at all
My cromecast could not find my wifi. My router broadcasts both 2.4 and 5 Ghz signals. Neither will show up on the chromecast, rendering it absolutely useless. I just broke it in half and threw it in the trash. I think I'll save for another Apple TV, or just stick with an hdmi cable to my laptop. Google, I'm severely disappointed. I had great hope for the concept.
Severely LIMITED, questionable and over hyped device
Chromecast doesn't do much more than a good Smart TV doesn't already. It is easy to set up, and has some apps to use, but here are the reasons why it has stayed in my drawer permanently. Firstly, good luck maintaining a cast more than a few minutes at a time. Constant drop-outs and lags make this a really poor replacement for the HDMI cable. You can game with it or watch YouTube for short periods, but it's hardly worth the effort. Secondly, this device will only work if connected to the Internet. Forget streaming anything from your home n...etwork or using it on the road unless you are constantly connected. Why Google needs to send data offsite is a mystery. Thirdly, when starting up, if your router is not swtiched on, the Chromecast creates an open WiFi network which is a security risk which Google admits on its message boards be used by someone to cast to your television. None of these things really make me want to use it.
Questions & Answers
How do I get SBS on my new google Chromecast with google tv? I thought I selected it from Apps menu on install but it’s not appearing now on available apps...?
why when I use the device to watch SBS on demand does it sometimes cut the start of the show, and why is it that all the other providers such as I view, does not seem to have this problem. what do I need to do to fix this irritating problem
I would to ask if when you mirror your screen to the tv, does it use the wifi on your mobile. I would like to mirror my screen to tv and then use the wifi to surf the internet (google maps, a browser page or anything else). So is the wifi free to browse the internet while mirroring your screen?
And now there is also a guest mode. So you can mirror your screen lets say in a hotel without using wifi. Is again your wifi free to surf the internet while doing this? Thanks
When setting Chromecast up it asks you which wifi you want to connect to ? I only have one that connects and does it all, home installed wifi where all products identify and log to - hope this helps.
I can't get guest mode to work at all. I have downloaded the update of Google Home App. Looks different.
My TV shows the PIN on the screen, which we assume means a guest who doesn't have access to our wifi password but can see the PIN on the monitor, will be able to CAST (mirror) their screen to our TV.
But it doesn't find any compatible devices for them to cast to unlessvthey are already connected to our wifi.
I might try rebooting the Chromecast
