Way too bright, too fiddly
The light on the Gro Clock is way too bright, it alone wakes up my toddler and once awake, that’s now it. The set-up is too fiddly and the book is too small too be effective at reading together. Do not buy.
Purchased in December 2020 for $50.00.
Useless for smart toddlers
Our 3 year old was too clued on for this clock. Particularly in summer when the real sun is up at 5am and her clock sun comes on at 6.30am, she questions why the clock and the real sun didn't come up at the same time!! Also, there is no way that an independent 3 year old is going to stay in bed just because a clock hasn't changed to yellow yet, please!! My daughter is way too smart for this clock I'm sorry.
Purchased in August 2020 at Big W for $55.00.
I used these a few years ago for my first 2 children, and initially they worked well in teaching my kids to stay in bed until the sun came up. However the clock stopped keeping time properly and i was forever adjusting it every few days. Only writing this review now as i wanted to see if there were any improvements as I'm looking for a new clock for my 3rd child, but might try Sam the lamb/sheep clock.
Clock that doesn’t keep time
The clock I got as a gift. Within a week of using it the time was falling more and more behind. When I reached out to Tommee Tippee (who owns gro clock) they said without a receipt they cannot help at all because they “have to be fair”.
Gro clock was losing power intermittently and then wouldn't turn on altogether. This is what was wrong...
That little plug that plugs into the back of the clock turned out to be faulty. Good thing hubby checked it with a multimeter before I tore the clock apart. We just MacGyvered a replacement bit Frankenstein style, and now its better than it's been for months, no longer randomly switching off and losing time.
You can also just purchase a 6v 200Ma DC power supply from a hardware store for less than $15 if you aren't trying to fix it at midnight or don't know about working with electricity.
All round my daughter LOVES her Gro clock and it ha...s helped her regulate her sleeping hours a bit. I did find the program a little complicated, but once I understood the concept ( my kid was not getting out of bed in the morning which is the opposite reason to why most people buy these) it got easier.
Purchased at Facebook for $45.00.

We used this for about 6 weeks and it seemed great, then it started to lose time. The alarm wasn’t coming on because it thought it was still 6:50 when it was actually 7:15 etc. We reset all the settings, and then it started to turn the alarm on early? No idea what was going on with it. It would still say it was set for 7:00 but the light would be on already when it’s own clock said 6:30. Made no sense. To answer other questions you can have the light on with a choice of brightness all night if you want, or off completely which was how we used i...t. Maybe others who have had issues with losing time were also using it with the light off? Of course that shouldn’t affect it, but it’s strange so many people have had similar problems when others have had none. Such a shame because it was great when it was working how it was supposed to!
Have two Gro Clocks both with display issues - lights not working as should. My children hate the fact the images have disappeared mummy can’t fix them. Would never purchase again. Waste of money with no resolution from company.
Purchased for $60.00.
Did not work for us..
This is the last resort of trying and hoping it will work for my child, but unfortunately outcome is still the same "early riser". My little one manage to figure out how to change the time and so he can see the difference pictures on the screen ( sun and the star). I think it need to build/ design better to outsmart kids..
Purchased in April 2019 at Baby Bunting for $59.00.
Great concept but clock screen lasted less than 1 year
The concept of this clock is great. It allows you to teach your child that they need to stay in bed/when it is appropriate to wake up.
-I do not like that the nighttime colour is blue. I have read that blue lights are not ideal to have in your bedroom.
The manufacturers warranty only lasts for 1 year (typical?). That’s about how long the digital time lasted on my clock until parts of the numbers disappeared. When I spoke to a representative about this, she seemed not to care that the time was not working and only that the colours were still functional.
When you pay upwards of $60 plus tax for a clock, you expect it to work for longer than one year.
Will break around 12months
The clock itself for teaching your child the difference between sleep time & wake up time is great. However, the clock’s display starts to distort around the 12 month mark and ours had all but disappeared around 14months. At which point I found out it only comes with a 12month warranty. Poor performance & life span for a $60 clock. Disappointed in the gro company.
This clock is a hassle not a help!
EXTREMELY difficult to program. EXTREMELY difficult to change the brightness.
This is the most unintuitive design i have come across in a very long while.
TIME does not keep - constantly losing 1 or 2 mins. I am constantly re-adjusting the time.
This clock is a hassle not a help! Night, night GroClock, you are going back to the store.
Was brilliant until blue screen started flashing green
The gro clock was very useful. My 4 year old used to get up at the crack of dawn but after explain the gro clock now only gets up when the 'sun is out'. However we've had it about 3 months and during the night it randomly flashes green which totally freaks my son out so think we are going to have to stop using it. Haven't had it long so feel it is a waste of money. However when it was not flashing it was really useful.
Terrible design, unintuitive to all but the kids
Setting the clock and wake-up time is amazingly unintuitive compared to products from Apple that we are all now well used to. But the thing that really detracts from this product is that unless you religiously lock the keypad (fairly complicated in its own right) every night at bed time, the kid only has to press one button on the thing in the morning when they wake up at ridiculous-o'clock and the screen turns from blue to yellow with a bright sun face winking at them, signalling that it is time to run yelling into mum & dad's room. The sun hasn't actually come up and fades back to the overnight blue star within 15 seconds, but that brief yellow face is as good a green light for the kid.
Great concept, but...
It's too bloody bright!!!
We've had the clock for over two weeks now. My 2.5yo son gets the concept of staying in bed until the sun on the morning, but for daytime naps it's not working as he dropped his nap but he just can't wait for the sun so he climbs out of his bed when he is ready.
The brightness! Seriously Gro Company, the brightness on the clock needs to be addressed. I hate light in rooms at night and I knew this would shine some light but I didn't think it would be this bright. It's on #1 and it's still too bright that when my boy...
Do not buy if you travel - Broke 2 times while traveling
Besides the fact that it is a bit complicated to set, once set, it worked nicely with our kids. However, the 2 times we traveled with it, it broke!
We are from Montreal and travelled to Portugal. We used it with an adaptor, and it stopped working (only electric device that broke during thath trip). We decided to buy another one. Then, we traveled to Cuba (same electricity as Canada). When we plugged it, it stopped working again! I wrote the company and they did nothing. Just saying you should not travel with it. If so, they should write it in big. They did not offer any compensation. Now I need to buy another clock but will NEVER buy a gro clock again.
Terrible waste of money
Just a complete waste of time. The concept of was very easy for our nearly three year old to grasp so we were hopeful for no more 5am wakes. However the button lock function is activated/deactivated by pressing only one button for a few seconds. On the SECOND NIGHT my daughter worked this out and now simply overrides the key lock function, presses the button to bring up the yellow sun and proudly marches into our room stating "the sun's here now - time to wake up.' Worst $55 I ever spent.
Good idea except it lights up the room!
This clock seems to work for most children but even on the dimmest setting it was so bright it lit up my son's room. He went from waking at 5.30-6am to waking at 4-5am as he'd wake and see the light and think it was morning even though he knew the sun wasn't out yet.
My son learnt very quickly that the stars meant sleep time and the sun meant morning.
It was far too bright and he woke up even earlier from the light in his room.
6.30am is better than 5am!
After a few long weeks of 4 & 5am wake ups we were ready to try just about anything to get more sleep! The clock has helped us greatly! Don't get me wrong, we still wake to call outs at 6am but we are able to demonstrate to our two year old that it isn't quite time to wake up yet as the sun hasn't come up on his clock yet. It's like having an independent third party who he can't question! It can be frustrating though when he wakes at 6.50am and the wake time is set to 7am...we'd prefer a remote so we can say, yep, great job, you're allowed up r...ight now! And same as when he wakes at 6 but then resettles to 6.45am but the (clock) sun still isn't up! And battery back up would be great for when little hands can't resist the urge to touch the clock & accidentally unplug it from the power. The added bonus that it can also be a night light. Simple, easy to use, helped our son resettle back to sleep when waking early in the morning or waking early in a day sleep. No back up battery. No remote. The book (which is advised as a selling point) is cheap and flimsy. For the price of the product, the quality of this book could be greatly improved! Expensive.
LOVE IT, BUT CRITICAL FEATURES MISSING!!
We bought this for our 3 year old who kept getting up through the night not knowing if it was morning or yet. Also, in summer she was getting up at 5am once twilight started. We have used this for her to tell when it is ok to get up or make noise. She knows that she must wait until the sun comes up before she comes out of her room. It is great that she can see the stars counting down and can know whether it is nearly "sun up" time, or still sleep time. If there are one or two stars left on countdown, then she knows she can read or play quietly ...until the sun comes up. Most mornings, we hear her door click exactly when the sun comes up - like she has been waiting patiently. This is also fantastic to take on holidays for when the light in the room might be different than home and both our 4 and 7 year olds body clocks can get out of whack. They know when it is time to get up. It allows our 4 year old independence and stops the all night wake ups. Great to take on holidays. It has been a real positive for us in keeping our little one in bed for longer. My daughter loves to watch the clock go to sleep, and then the sun come up. Ok, so the big gripe that I have (and this is a real design flaw in my view) is that there is no battery back up. This is not all that important until we have a blackout - as we regularly have where we live - through the night and the clock doesn't keep counting down. Hence, it is no longer serves it purpose once it has lost power and has to be reset. Also, I wish that the screen was able to be dimmed more as it is quite bright in the room and I have to turn it well away from my daughter's face so it isn't shining on her. This kind of defeats the purpose as she can no longer see it!
Waste of Money
This clock is way to expensive for what it is. I was dissapointed by the cheap quality of it when I got it out of the box. In addition:
- No battery option only plug in
- Easily manipulated back to being the sun by my own toddler!
- Dont like the navigation of the settings.
I wish I had read other reviews before I bought this but I was looking for an "easy" answer. If you are reading this and thinking of getting one - go buy some blinds for kids bedroom instead! Or go to bed earlier so you can wake with the sun like mine does :) Just dont go wasting your money you will regret it.
The sun and moon are cute.
Questions & Answers
Our gro clock keeps turning yellow before the set wake up time. We have followed the instructions exactly and every morning our clock has been set for 6.10 however my son comes out at 6 and the yellow sun is already on. We tried locking it last night.
Not sure what we are doing wrong?
Does any one know why before the set sleep time why the start comes out?
Gro clock has been working fine for months; over last three days set the clock on the "sun" time to activate the clocks sunrise for the next morning at 0730 hrs. However the next morning the screen is still showing 8+ stars and has the blue nigh time screen.Suggestions please ? Thank you
