Gapsaver not what its cracked to be if you leave
We have been paying the highest amount of gapsaver with HBF to create a bank for upcoming dental expenses. We've accumulated about $1000 of our own money. Recently we had to close our account because my husband has a health policy through his new job. When I questioned why my gapsaver wasn't refunded, I was told that it's not possible and I should have read the disclosure statement. When they sold me this scheme, there was absolutely no mention of this if we decided to leave. They told me that they will go back 2 years and use up as much of it...for me as possible. I've already claimed what I could using the gapsaver so looks like our hard earned money is lost forever. So just a warning to everyone about Gapsaver, don't let it build up too much because if you leave, there's no refund. Also pays to read the fine print, which they should tell you about during the sale. Furthermore, HBF have really cut back on their claim amounts so I'd be doing some shopping around. We have been with them for 20 years and this is the thank you!!!
Ill be running from hbf for a reason
Im not going into details on this site because i think i would run out of space but i will say this.
I have been a long time member with hbf and now i feel like they dont know whats going on and im just being fed mis information because it feels like everyone i talk to at hbf had there own answer to my problems and nothing is solved.
West Australians need to start looking around!
I have been a loyal member of HBF ever since working age. Joined HBF because everybody else was doing it - its WA's largest private health fund. I have never had any trouble claiming anything and have always had a pleasant experience whenever I needed to call someone. I moved interstate very recently and HBF is not based where I am now so I was inclined to move to a difference health fund. I had no problems with cancelling except not being told that I would forfeit whatever I had in my gapsaver. Only found out about this when I followed up abou...t my cancellation. Now in NSW and signed up with another health fund and getting much more value compared to HBF! West Australians should look out of the HBF bubble that they're in and look at all the other competitors out there, only wish it didn't take me moving interstate to realise this!
Cover not as good as it appeared
After switching from another provider, as we were told we could get better coverage for less, we were happy we had a great insurer, until it came time for major surgery for our child.
Only private hospital doctors available, no option for anesthetist, had to go with who was HBF pick ($400 out of pocket), plus dentist picked by HBF ($750 out of pocket), plus $400 gap from ENT... and nothing back from HBF. Changed providers very quickly.
Call centre service/wait times
Been with HBF for 12 months and haven't had any issues. Called HBF to clarify as issue and have been on hold for over 40mins now. No indication of how much longer I'll need to be on hold, no idea where I am in the queue. Yet to speak to a human being. Tried to ring my local branch but no answer.
My call was answered after 50mins on hold and the person was SO helpful! Told me my claim would be fully covered, asked me if there was anything else he could help with. He changed my policy so I'd get an additional $700 in claims for only $520 out of pocket. Even stayed on the phone past 6pm (their phone centre close time) just to be sure he'd answered all of my questions.
Great and fast, bit pricy.
Got all four of my wisdom teeth out at once and it cost me $180. HBF were amazing over the phone and covered basically the whole thing. Have always had great service and love being able to pull out my card and cover everything.
Policy does increase though, getting more and more expensive.
Variation in Private hospital charges
Spent from 6 am in Coronary Care and was told to go home at 8 am - took until 3.30 to get the paperwork from the private hospital. Then the account arrived from HBF saying they had paid the total of $9974. To me this was ridiculous so I rang HBF and was told that whatever the hospital requested they paid regardless. To make matters even worse exactly one week later a friend spent 3 nights in the same hospital even in the same bed and received an account for $1937. HBF were to contact me with explanations two weeks after speaking to them which was in December 2016. What a rip off. No wonder our fees to HBF increase. Where do I go from here to get some answers?
cover and service
Coverage is very broad and claim management is the really good.
Shame the branch takes a while to see someone. Up to 5-7 empty consulting tables and waiting periods up to 1.5 hours.
Beneficial to WA residents only
Lets keep it relevant to the facts:
I'm single, not looking to have kids, just use chiro and maybe dental once a year.
I got the Singles Hospital Cover and Essential Standards at $37.15 per fortnight
I claimed $140 for contacts, $22 for chiro, $200 for dental in that whole year
Then upon consideration, I cancelled the cover and resigned with 4 essential extras only. To my opinion, this is because HBF has such a huge provider base in WA, so it's easy to find one near you. Plus I dont have any preferences for any medical work so not a prob...lem there. I'm happy with paying $8.45 or something for the 4 I get. Now with hospital cover I'm going to join Peoplecare, because they cover you and I can get public hospital cover with No excess for a lower total premium than I did before with a joint one with HBF with the peace of mind I'm covered more in hospital and no excess to be paid. Being less than 30 and not into adventure sports or outdoor activities in general, I'm happy with that. Shop around and remember that combos are not necessarily the best deal for YOU. Each provider has their own strengths and weaknesses in each state so take that into account for your location. - many locations for quick cash back claims - good for WA - they have many other products so additional products includes 10% discount - quotes are not cheap compared to benefits and slightly underaverage as well compared to industry - kinda not relevant but they don't cover import or high risk vehicles so I couldnt combine and save =(
We had HBF insurance when we lived in WA and found it was very good. If you do live in WA - make sure you get them to explain 'gap saver'. We inadvertently paid it for years, without realising that all it does is put away some savings for when you in case you can't afford all your out of pocket expenses. Frankly, I'd rather put that money in the bank myself.
When we moved interstate HBF told use we'd still be covered Australia wide. Unfortunately, we found we couldn't make any claims using HiCAPS, and because HBF doesn't have agreements with ...
Probably the way to go for health insurance in Western Australia, but that is because of their market dominance - they have more than half the health insurance market here. Their ambulance only cover is pretty competitively priced, if that is all you are after, but they could lift their game with their other products.
Probably the best coverage of the health insurers in Western Australia, and competitively priced ambulance only cover. Good branch network in Perth.
Their other products, such as comprehensive health insurance, are not that cheap. They have large market share and do not do much to stay innovative with the others.

Why is the gap saver no longer available?
Hi Davidg, thank you for getting in touch!
We proactively review our health cover offering, which can lead to us making changes to our suite including closing certain products for sale. In 2019 we reviewed our suite and decided to close Gap Saver to new sales. This cover option is still available to those who held it at the time it was closed.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call on 133 423. -Bella
