Shopped around for best quote and HBF was the easiest to follow - simple pricing and explanations. I got a call back within 2 days and talked through what I needed from the policy and was helped to choose the best option (and not the most expensive). Friendly help that got me set up quickly and easily.
Free Fitness Sessions for members is fantastic
We love the HBF Fitness Sessions which are free for members (not available in winter); all family members attend regularly. We usually get the free flu vaccine too. We don't make many claims aside from dental which is not as generous as I would like. Online claiming is a breeze. However I found it overwhelmingly confusing to re-evaluate our policy needs a few years ago, spoke to 3 different staffers before understanding the options well enough to make a decision: no wonder advocates are pushing for simplification. Received differing opinions a...bout which pharmaceuticals were covered, some were initially refused then when I claimed in person the same medications were allowed. I can't find a list of covered medications on their website which is frustrating.
Phoned first time today
I have had HBF cover since 2012 & phoned today for the first time in quite awhile. Am a bit surprised by the number of recent negative reviews as I wasn't on hold for very long (approx 7 minutes) and the customer service was helpful. So far, so good! Just wanted to offer an alternative review to those that I've read recently!
Good obstetrics cover, rubbish extras
Took out insurance with HBF because birth related services were included in their mid-hospital cover. Apart from the excess, they basically covered everything while my wife was in hospital. However, same can't be said for extras cover. We recently cancelled ours because it effectively covers nothing.
So far so good
I moved to HBF for a better deal from one of the majors, which I have done. Just before I moved providers I learnt that I had been over charged for years, because I did not have continuous coverage for 10 years after my 30th birthday. The reason was I was living and working permanently overseas for 6 years.
My previous fund was in no rush to tell me this and were happy to overcharge me for the last 7 years since returning. This is despite the fact I was with this fund before moving overseas and coming back.
Long story short, I submitted the ...
HBF facts and being admitted to a Govt. hospital as a Private Patient.
HBF want you to do everything online like most companies these days! I waited for 20 minutes the other day to speak to someone at HBF - they were very helpful though. One thing I learnt was the more claims you make, the higher your premium will go up on the 1st April!! My husband and I are in our late seventies, so we have made a few claims recently. One thing never be admitted to a Govt. Hospital as a private patient - cost HBF over $30,000 recently when my husband was admitted to RPH as a private patient - you receive the exact same treatmen...t as non private patients - you get a few extras though, free TV, meal voucher for wife, health pack, newspaper and parking voucher daily. My husband was too ill to watch TV or read a newspaper and the parking vouchers were put in his bedside drawer, so never used!!
So far so good!
I joined with HBF in the 2015 new financial year and my experience with them has only been positive. The sign up process was straight forward, phone calls have always promptly addressed my queries, staff have always phoned me back in a timely manner, and my claims have always been processed with no care!
I've claimed for orthodontic and osteo appointments of which I've had no issues with my claims. Even their online chat staff are friendly, helpful and prompt with their response.
I can't expect much more from my health fund provider, so thank you HBF. I have confidence that I made the right decision when selecting my health fund provider!
Very good within WA, not recommended interstate
I have been with HBF for many years and within WA, it's the cheapest provider for the services that I want covered. I have always found their branch staff to be helpful and friendly and they have paid out claims etc promptly.
Recenty I went interstate for work for 18 months, and was assured by HBF that they could offer me comparable service there. They did say upfront that they don't have 'recommended' providers anywhere outside of WA which I accepted (this means you cannot approach HBF for a list of providers who will do services without y...ou being required to pay any excess etc). Unfortunately, dealing with them by phone and post was very difficult (they have no branches outside of WA). No machines would recognise HBF as a provider, and although the medical provider is supposed to be able to phone HBF to register with them (and then the machine will recognise HBF), in reality this was a convoluted process. In one instance the medical provider had to phone HBF 3 times because someone on HBF's side kept making mistakes. You need to send all original receipts to HBF by post for claims. I did so, but then checked my statement and realised that they had not reimbursed me for a claim I know I had submitted the receipt for. More hassles... Overall, I have found HBF to be faultless within WA and I would definitely recommend them for WA dwellers. I would recommend avoiding them if you travel interstate a lot or plan to move interstate (go with a national provider instead!) Friendly and helpful branch staff, reasonably priced policies Very WA specific, was very difficult to use them interstate
They are fast to process claims, provide great coverage on hospital stays but let themselves down when it comes to most extras. I've been with them my entire adult life and are happy to stay with them. The fees increase about 5% a year which is in line with other funds.
Being in WA every health agency you deal with knows about HBF. They are now part of HICAPS which means you only pay the out-of-pocket portion of your bill instead of the old system of paying the full amount then going to a HBF office and claiming the refund.
Unless your dentist is linked in with HBF as an approved provider then the refund is very little (eg got $300 back of $2300 expenses). My major regional city has NO approved dental providers.
I'm generally really happy with HBF. It's so easy to swipe and just pay the gap at lots of places including the dentist and optometrist. They covered the majority of my son's orthoodontic work which included a fixed plate and now braces. Also I recently had cataract day surgery which was all fully covered, it was fantastic to not have to pay a cent for it.
Good customer service, now a branch at my local shopping centre
Can sometimes be long wait on the phone

Why is the gap saver no longer available?
Hi Davidg, thank you for getting in touch!
We proactively review our health cover offering, which can lead to us making changes to our suite including closing certain products for sale. In 2019 we reviewed our suite and decided to close Gap Saver to new sales. This cover option is still available to those who held it at the time it was closed.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call on 133 423. -Bella
