With HBF for over 30 years.
I was covered by my parents policy as a child when health insurance was more of a luxury than the necessity it is these days. As a uni student I switched to my own policy after I realised the true value and relief of cover after HBF covered my emergency surgery.
My policy ceased for several years whilst living in Syd and now that I am back in Perth I've returned to HBF for the last 7 years.
I love HBF. The customer service is excellent whether in store or on the phone.you've got flexibility to amend your policy to suit your needs - you just need to ask about your options. The website and app are excellent.
I am so pleased with them that I will never leave them - unless I move overseas.
Great Price - Friendly Service
Switched from NIB to HBF and saved a stack for the same level of cover. Staff over the phone have been super helpful and friendly. Love their Quokka ads as well, super cute.
Customer Service outstanding
We attended the William Street Branch in Perth CBD. We was greeted on entering office and only had to wait 5 minutes for a consultant. Consultant was friendly and very knowledgeable, answered all our questions and explained other options also available. I wanted to change cover for more services and my husband was enquiring about transferring from another provider. We were not rushed and a very pleasant experience. I have been a member for 4 years. I have not had any issues with claims (last claim June 2018) and very happy with service I am re...ceiving. My husband has now also transferred from another provider who he had been with for 15 years and is also very impressed with services and customer support provided. I would highly recommend HBF if you are considering a private health provider.
So far, really good service
I am writing this because it seems like HBF is coping unnecessarily as compared to other funds. I have been for 3 years now and claimed a number of extras successfully and easily. Through chat and phone staff was always good an professional and all changes were done pretty quickly. I also like that you are rewarded for staying with them as your claim amount goes up if you stay with them for longer. Finally, their extras policy is flexible which makes it a great value, for example, one year you know you will need physio for your neck, so you swi...tch to that policy (up to 10 you can choose) while next year you can switch to chiropractor instead. That essentially gives you an opportunity to have all extras you might need without paying for all of them. I have also tried comparing it to other funds - CUA has excellent reviews here - and compared to my policy with HBF, CUA is actually more expensive. The only thing is that I am not sure how the hospital works as I never used this one - however, there is no reason to believe HBF will be worse than any others; private insurance system itself is ridiculous with these 'gap's that makes health insurance next to pointless. If i was earning less than 90k, i wouldn't bother looking at having any private health and instead saving my 3k per year for emergencies.
Very Happy with HBF
I have been with HBF over 9 years and have been very pleased with the service received. The staff are very helpful professional and polite . The extras as well as the fitness classes are excellent. Will be a loyal customer for a long time.
Always had a great experience
I'm with the other people who have provided positive reviews. It's hardly a fair representation of all the covered members, as most people don't usually leave positive reviews. But these same people will jump at any opportunity to vent their frustration. And usually this will come down to the incompetence of the person writing that negative review in the first place. Everyone knows to read the fine print, but do they do it? No, probably not. And then when they get bitten, the first thing they do is write a scathing review for their own shortfal...l. Insurance is insurance, you're never going to feel like you've come out winning. However, I've just had $12k worth of hospital cover paid for by HBF, and it was all such a simple process. I used an HBF approved surgeon, had a private room (which I had to pay for - but I also knew this was the case as I knew exactly what my cover is), and haven't yet paid a cent. I've always had free to very cheap dental visits, always had a decent amount of physio coverage and also got a free pair of specs after wondering why my eyes were always tired - this isn't even something I thought of when I signed up for HBF. So I'd discount what people say. The internet is a great thing, but it sure attracts a lot of people who just want to have a whinge because they can.
Value for money ,the best extra cover
I am an admin at a dental surgery in Brisbane, dealing with private health insurances everyday. I have been with many different health funds myself( medibank private, Pupa ) .But HBF is the best one so far. Especially their extra flexi saver . You pay for what you need the most. Not like others policies, waste $$$ on things which we never claim. I do agree with some reviews that they take forever to answer your call but it usually happens to most health funds anyways. To be honest, at the moment flexi saver of HBF is the cheapest on the market.
Don't be deluded by most of these comments
I have also been a long standing member of HBF and my experience has been exemplary in every matter. The problem with comment sites like this one is that anyone can say anything to rubbish HBF. It's pretty clear, those health funds that have to generate shareholder profits cannot possibly compete with a fund like HBF that is owned by it's members. I was with HBF for many years and the premium was paid by my employer. At one point, my employer decided to move everyone to Medibank Private and I had no choice but to change. During my time with MP ...I came across a bill I could have claimed with HBF so I walked into their office in Innaloo and asked if I could claim it as it was twelve months since leaving. Straight away they said that as I was with HBF when the bill was generated that I could. I've since left that employment and I immediately changed over again to HBF and I haven't; had a single issue even though I've had some serious health problems such prostate cancer. I've just read a lot of these comments below and deduce that most of them are written by employees of profit driven health funds so don't believe a single word of them. There is no way known that they can compete so they resort to nonsense comments for the obvious reasons.
Long standing customer!
I have to say I am a little surprised with what I have been reading in regard to the reviews left recently. I have been a customer of HBF since I was 15, I am now 49, I took out singles cover, then got married and had children, I have continued to support HBF as I have always felt they have been there to support my family on many occasions.
I love the known gap cover specialists they have on there books. Myself and my family have used some of the specialists for various procedures without any out of pocket expense, all whilst being on mid ...range cover with Hospital, they have all been fantastic, cant speak highly enough of the specialists. I recently upgraded my cover, I visited the Joondalup store and saw a really lovely customer service officer, who could not help me enough. I will be sticking with them.
Wonderful customer service by Eddie
I switched health insurance earlier this year to HBF. With my previous insurer, the whole family got no-gap dental check up and cleaning each year. I wasn't sure if I would need to pay for our upcoming regular check up and cleaning, so I rang HBF to confirm my cover. To cut long story short, Eddie, the guy helped me on the phone, went extra miles and rang my dental practice to find out more details of my appointment and the prices. When we realised that I would definitely have to pay the gap (and I wasn't impressed with that), Eddie spoke to th...e practice again and clarified that if I changed appointment to hygienist instead of dentist, there wouldn't be any gap. We do have good teeth in the family and the cleaning was all I wanted anyway, so the solution seemed good to me. I just wanted to thank Eddie for his excellent customer service, for putting himself in the customer's shoes and taking initiatives to help find the best solution.
Excellent Member Benefits / Deals, Great Coverage, Quick Claims

HBF the way to go!
After requiring urgent surgery was informed by Medibank they would not be covering the item numbers I had provided even though I had served the waiting periods and not made a claim in over 2 years (paying $130 a month) I cancelled Medibank over the phone and joined with HBF, the day before surgery (tomorrow 19/12/14) HBF are covering hospital fee and can claim against item numbers Medibank declined me. I am paying $60 extra a month with HBF with ALOT more benefits. Had a wonderful experience speaking with Rebecca over the phone who was extremely helpful and got back to me same day with a quote for the surgery. Couldn't recommend a better provider.
Great cover for young families
I've been with HBF my whole life, initially under my parents membership, then under my own and I can't fault them. I'm now married with young kids of my own and after doing many detailed comparisons, I can't find a better priced, better covered insurer for our situation. We have the Smart Saver Twin Pack which gives us mid level hospital cover and extras for $175 a month (with the 30% rebate), Excess is only $100, much lower than other insurers. I have claimed for two caesarean births, two shoulder operations, gallbladder removal, a hospital...stay for pancreatitis, and numerous day surgery procedures. I also claim regularly for optical, physio and dental. I may have to look at upgrading in future as the kids get older as orthodontics is not covered, but so far I have been very happy with our coverage and service. Inexpensive, easy to claim, wide variety of providers No cover for orthodontic with Smart Saver Twin Pack
If you can afford it, get it.
After being a member for over 10 yrs I was run over by a Volvo ! Off work for 12mths but HBF paid my premiums until I was back at work That was in 1996. I lost my job in 2007 but was hospitalised twice that year for elective surgery. Once again HBF paid all my medical bills & did not require me to pay premiums for 9 mths until I recovered & could afford to start payments again.
Can't complain about that.
Easy to deal with, quick @ efficient claims.
Not cheap, but then what good insurance is ?

Why is the gap saver no longer available?
Hi Davidg, thank you for getting in touch!
We proactively review our health cover offering, which can lead to us making changes to our suite including closing certain products for sale. In 2019 we reviewed our suite and decided to close Gap Saver to new sales. This cover option is still available to those who held it at the time it was closed.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to give us a call on 133 423. -Bella
