Unwilling to cooperate
Having been alerted by the comments that follow, HIF customer support rectified their error within hours. This is pleasing and I have changed the star rating accordingly. Just a pity the first point of contact did not yield the same result:
I have been left extremely frustrated by HIF's lackadaisical approach to my predicament. I am signed up to HIF's 'Super' options and recently paid for two months cover up front to take advantage of paying the lower rate before their premium increased. Today, with a rare day off scheduled tomorrow, I d...
Read moreecided to book an appointment with the dentist. I then went into HIF's member area online to discover that as far as HIF are concerned, my membership is due for renewal today. This means it will be overdue tomorrow, the day of my scheduled visit. This means my HICAPS claim will not be honoured. Obviously flawed as I have paid upfront for another two months down the line. Having double checked my bank transactions, this was confirmed. I then contacted HIF only to be told to send them an email notifying them of the issue and that it would likely be looked at within a few days. In spite of explaining that it was a matter of urgency given my appointment tomorrow, they could not look into the matter right away. Why? It is their fault and it should be a fairly straightforward procedure. One would imagine they would accept that the onus would be on them to investigate the matter immediately. I am a father working 50 to 60 hour weeks. Days off are rare and the opportunity for dentist appointments rare. I will now have to cancel my appointment and waste very precious time off proving to HIF that I have indeed paid them for the forthcoming two months. Not happy HIF. Just the sort of incident that makes people start shopping around for insurance funds that treat their customers with a little more respect.1 comment

Best value my circumstances
I rarely write reviews about things but felt the need to write a positive one about HIF. After being fed up with the lack of value I was getting from BUPA and the increasing restrictions of which health providers I could see, I contacted a third party health insurance reviewer and whilst reluctant to go through the process, I am actually glad the operator found HIF for me.
I have had no issues with HIF since signing up, all my waiting periods were matched and I have received more value from HIF than I would have ever done with my previous...
Read more fund. There are rarely any 'preferred' providers which allows me to choose which health professionals I would like to see. I have only ever once had to call customer support and whilst there was a long wait via telephone (I rang late on a Friday afternoon!), I eventually ended up emailing their team and got a prompt response. My disclaimer is that for the specific extras I use and because I do not need extensive hospital cover, I have only good things to say about HIF. Their claiming system is extremely easy and rebates get deposited electronically within a few days. Admittedly the increase in premiums for the upcoming year were a bit steep but I have chosen to prepay for the next few months which saves me some money. Whilst still happy with HIF, I do research regularly as to what other health funds are offering and I am yet to find a better policy for my life circumstances at this point in time.1 comment

Hello Fmyt,
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a wonderful review, especially as you rarely write them....
Read more As a not for profit health fund, we pride ourselves on providing a great experience to all members, so to hear such terrific feedback has really made our day. With regards to ‘preferred’ providers, we want members, like you, to have total freedom of choice when it comes to the providers you choose, so as long as your providers are legally qualified to practise in Australia, please rest assured they'll be automatically covered by HIF. More details on that are available here in case it’s useful: http://www.hif.com.au/health-insurance/information/pick-your-own-provider.aspx In terms of our premium increase for 2017, we don’t enjoy raising our premiums either. However, I’m afraid it was necessary to do so this year in order to address rising health related expenses such as increased doctor charges, advanced medical technologies, increases in member claims frequency, and more. As a new member though, you may be interested to know that since 2010, we’ve implemented the lowest total average premium increase over the past eight year period. So although this year’s increase was higher than usual, we always do our very best to keep a tight lid on our members’ premiums. In case it helps more useful information and FAQs about this year’s premium increase can also be found here: www.hif.com.au/premiums2017 Once again, Fymt, thank you very much for your kind words and if I can ever be of assistance in the future regarding your membership, please don't hesitate to email me direct. Excellent value, easy to set up, unbeatable Customer Support. Would highly recommend HIF. Was recommended to us by a third party Health Insurance reviewer and moved across after almost 15 yrs with another provider. Claim submitted and paid seamlessly. Customer service second to none (after a considerable wait but first thing consultant did was apologise for the wait). Overall, extremely professional.

HIF 2017 premium increase of 22.5% in April
A warning note to everyone on HIF 2017 premium increases. They are going up by a whopping 22.5%!!! I joined earlier this week having not been informed by HIF of their intension to increase their premiums by such an amount. Today I found out the truth and immediately cancelled my policy.
How has the Federal Govt allowed HIF to increase their premiums by so much?

I am writing regarding my daughters family membership she has paid into for past 19months (approx $5000). She called HIF to actually talk to someone to initiate becoming a member 19months ago stating that she wanted full cover if she was to become pregnant down the track.Neither she or her husband have never claimed for anything from the fund and they have a baby on the way. She inquired today regarding the ultrasounds she has had to pay for and what does she do to claim a refund. She was advised that they only have cover for a private hospital. What a waste of money. A total rip off of money. I wish people could be honest in what they are trying to sell with health insurance. Very annoyed mother.

So very disappointed
After being a member for 10 years I have had enough. I've claimed maybe 6 times in the entire time I have been a member.
I was about to upgrade my membership as I need joint surgery down the track so rang up to inquire. All I got was the lady demanding a payment NOW in order to upgrade me. I wanted information - not a demand for payment.
Despite trying desperately to get the information I needed, I ended up giving up when all she wanted was my credit card details.
Now looking at other funds and realising how much cheaper other options are. I now realise HIF are quite expensve!

Easy to navigate with the best value
I spent about three weeks researching all the different health insurance funds trying to find what was best for me and HIF had by far the easiest website to navigate in terms of picking exactly what I wanted and seeing what I was getting, which was my number one reason for picking them. The fact that they were also the most competitive in terms of price for my level of cover was icing on the cake. The sign up process was a breeze, the customer service so far has been excellent, and the blog on their site has some great articles.
Happy to recommend HIF to friends and family.

Unethical company causing clients' death.
They denied the claim when my mom, as their client, was facing death in hospital.
Their claim process is slow and tedious. And they'll find any excuse to deny the claim. In my parent's case, pre-existing rule. They just say my mom's stomach-ache, controlled by medicine, 9 months earlier when my mom was diagnosed as gastric cancer, ignoring the fact that there were nearly half an year during this period that my mom didn't have any discomfort of her stomach. Their initial assessment contains various incorrect facts that I found out later. Howe...
Read morever, they insist on their initial conclusion regardlessly, which is, having stomach ache 2 weeks before the policy started is the first sign of gastric cancer 9 months after. To all their clients, imagine if you have headache, cough, body sore, any kind of discomfort in your medical record before you're with HIF, you might be rejected claim when you desperately need it in the end. And if you think you can dispute, you're wrong. I asked HIF to provide specific medical evidence for the association between stomach ache and cancer, HIF just responded that they have followed correct process for assessment and will provide no further assistance. And if you think PHIO might help you out, you're wrong again. PHIO won't even bother to have an independent medical review for you. They'll just ask HIF to assess again. So at last, you think you can sue HIF? Sorry mate, I was told my total legal cost might end up $60-80k if I lost, so the lawyer suggested me to just give up for a $20k claim.4 comments

Very difficult claims procedure
We have had to claim three times with HIF and each time the process was difficult and they required extra forms and information that had in some cases already been provided. We had to make a separate trip to the GP that referred my wife to the hospital and have the GP sign forms and we had to go back to the hospital and have them sign other forms. Now on the 3rd time claiming they need more forms from the hospital that we have to get ourselves and forward to them. I would not recommend HIF.

Hello Glenville,
Thanks for your question. We certainly do pay a rebate on CPAP machines however it’s included on our Super or Premium Options Extras Covers (not Hospital cover) within the External Prosthesis / Medical Appliance category. Here's a quick overview of what can be claimed:
One machine can be claimed every 5 years from the previous supply (per person) and the benefit will be deducted from the Prosthesis annual limit of $1,500. The benefits payable are:
$300 for Members who've held Super or Premium Options for 3-5 years.
$600 for Members who've held Super or Premium Options for 5+ years.
It’s important to note though, that a 3-year waiting period would apply for this service should you wish to add Extras cover to your existing hospital cover. I hope this helps, however, if you have any further questions, or would like to speak with one of our Product Experts, feel free to email me directly at social@hif.com.au and I can arrange this for you.
Take care, Lisa.
Thanks, i also rang and found out same info.

1 answer
HIF A.HIF (Health Insurance Fund)
Hi Tina, thanks for getting in touch. If you’re an HIF Member and hold Super or Premium Options Extras Cover you will be eligible to claim a rebate for a back support brace under your prosthesis benefits. To do so, we’d simply need a letter of recommendation from your treating practitioner (along with your paid invoice) and you’d also need to have served the applicable 12-month waiting period. I hope that helps, but if you have any further queries please don't hesitate to get in touch with me directly. You can reach me on social@hif.com.au. Thanks, Molly.
