Horrible car, noisy and unreliable
My brother bought a Holden AH astra diesel on the back of the proviso of quality European/German engineering and build quality from a car salesman that recommended it. My brother also liked it and thought it was a good car. After paying $21,000 for it secondhand, the emission control system started acting up, clouds of bluish white smoke, engine misfiring, and going into limp mode, gearbox issues involving not staying in 5th gear, (kept going into 4th and staying there with the engine running at high speed. Only after 80km/h, the ability to hol...Read more
d 5th gear actually occurred. The dealer support was awful. No interest at all in helping him with the problems at all. The car went through 4 alternators, and 8 batteries in the space of 8 years, cause the car was alwys going flat. (it kept needing to be charged with a battery charger and was a complete loss of $21,000. My brother was ripped off badly, and the service contract that was supposed to be a savior? that was a joke. No help at all. Stay away from Holden products out of Europe, especially Europe. South Korean cars from Holden maybe better, but my brother was taken down. Don't touch it with a ten foot pole.Purchased in May 2009 at Hyundai Dealers for A$21,000.00.

DON'T BUY THIS TRASH
Bought this car in 2014 for $7000 however, I had to spend another $4000 repairs
The car shakes/judders when driving at 60km or higher. The sports button makes the car undrivable. Another typical European Holden, nothing but problems.
Avoid at all costs especially L and P platers as we don't have that much money to spend.

Crap car
Worst car ive ever owned. I cant believe there are reviews stating astras are great little cars far from it. I got the wagon 2006 model for 6grand. The horn stoped working after the first week. Then only 1 year later replaced the brake pads but there aas a major problems so from a $300 job it turned into $1000. And just only after that the coil pack went and the parts for the astra wagon are so expensive seriously guys this is the worst type of car and now i have a new problem and j dont know what has happened for ages it keeps cutting out after i try to turn it on and its not the starter motor or the alternator

Terrible
Good for nothing. 5 weeks after I bought this car it broke down. That was one sure sign of it being a lemon.
Second sign was when I took it for its first 6 monthly warranty service, and got told repairs would cost $880. ???
Apparently what needed to be replaced was not covered by the warranty. How convenient.
Somebody told me the Astra and the Holden Viva have same engine types. I will know to stay away from both in the future.
Please note: All the positive reviews you see, are written by Holden dealers. Customers will never have anything good to say about a Holden.

Worst car of all award goes to Astra
Worst car of all. Coolant started leaking just at 70000km and again at 120000k, head gasket failed at 150000K, Transmission failed at 160000K, now at 170000k engine has starting misfiring. Had to change front wheel bearings, power window motor, sway bar links. Should have gone for Japanese car.
Dealers were worse then the car itself. Rear Power window weren't working so went it to have it checked. Dealer said we need to replace the electric motor cost estimate ($900). The best part was that I had already checked and the motor was working fine, it was the window regulator that was broken cost estimate ($50). Bought it over ebay and fixed it myself rather get duped for $900. What a farce.

Bottomless money pit.
Had this car for four years. Performed the required services but alas, the problems continued to mount. Two ecu's, two coils packs, brake rotors and pads not lasting, engine overheating and doing the head. Thousands of dollars and mechanics who haven't a clue how to diagnose a problem, I've had enough. The car has gone into limp mode again because it is misfiring. Time for another car.

Don't buy this car !!! Nothing but trouble
I brought a 2000 Holden Astra it did last me only 5 years but during that time every 6 months something would go it cost so much money to fix and most mechanic can never fix the problem it lacked guts very slow take off , the car shook every-time I stopped or it would turn of on hills , then got that fixed other things went wrong the radio would be so loud every time I turned the car on even tho I never turned it up , oil light would stay on even tho there was no oil leaks and always oil in it faulty dash lights!
I would never ever buy this car again nothing but trouble
The only thing I like it just got me from a to b just .

Holden Astra Sucks
After 13 fixes $41,000 later the judge says no money just 1 more fix
Watever big business sux
So 6 years later I'm supposed to be patient for one more time so the judge can say you've had the cat for 7 years you've used it right?
No I've had Anxiety each time i opened the roof.
June 6th 2018 Update: Holden Astra was so bad it hit discontinued... not only that some parts you cannot get
If you want to spend 45K then sob for the following years... deal with holden! I regretted having ever dealt with them and the last straw was to find out some parts have been totally discontinued.... joke
The times I was left by the way side - rained on ... how infuriating.

STEER CLEAR OF THIS RUBBISH!
Steer clear of this model of astra as it was the the most terrible car from factory. My father had owned this car for seven years and was driven mainly by my parents, over seven years of proper maintenance it never stopped coming up with problems such as ignition coils, air conditioning, engine failure. The car always been properly driven by mature adults and it just seemed to be a very car. Everytime my father took it to the dealership the cost to fix those things was over $2000 AUD which is completely ridiculous as most mechanics did not want...Read more

Dont buy one and if you have one sell it now
Bought a second hand 2005 AH Astra auto for my daughter.
First the horn wasnt working - turned out to be the CIM module. At the same time the auto gears were not changing properly. Luckily these both got fixed under the dealer warranty.
A year later the gearbox had issues and would not change above 2nd. Caused by the transmission fluid being diluted by coolant as the design is such that gearbox coolant flows through the radiator and any failure causes this catastrophic result. End result the clutches etc in the gearbox were ruined and neede...Read more
d a complete rebuild. Say goodbye to over 4 grand. That was 2 weeks ago. Now tonight the motor has developed a horrible misfire and has complete loss of power. I'm hoping its just the coil pack but who knows - could be a complete engine rebuild knowing my luck. If you have one of these bucket of bolts get rid of it before it sends you broke.Similar opinion? Solid and good looking. Mechanically soul destroying.
The Astra was such a love/hate car for our family. The love comes from the fact that all of the Astra’s are good to drive. They feel solid, hold the road well, have aged well so still look good and, most of all, have that definite European feel about them. The fact that Holden switched it out for something as dull and generic as the Cruze will, for them at least, go down in history as a fatal mistake.
With this in mind it pains me to admit that we have never been happier than the day we walked into a dealership (not a Holden dealership) and ...Read more
parted company with this vehicle. From start to finish it was an absolute nightmare. To be fair, the problems experienced were largely attributable to the fact that we bought the diesel car. It was the first diesel we owned and the performance of the manual car (the auto has a lower spec motor) was downright impressive. Whilst first impressions were heavenly, the AH diesel Astra is an absolute lemon. The engine is actually a Fiat motor. It pops up in numerous Fiat, Opel (Holden), Saab and Alfa Romeo vehicles. And. Everything they say about Italian cars being unreliable to the point of absurdity is quantified by this engine. We bought our bright red Astra with 5000 kilometres on the clock (2008 model) and sold it with just over 85000km on the dial. We have never parted with a vehicle with such low mileage but it was pretty clear to us that holding onto it for any longer would be a fatal mistake financially. Without the factory warranty the bills this vehicle could serve up were nothing short of staggering. The first major issue was at 20,000kms. A complete failure of the dual mass flywheel in the vehicle. The car was off the road for three weeks whilst Holden messed around trying to diagnose the fault and then tried to avoid paying for it (approximately $4000.00). Apparently the “first time” the problem had occurred but when Google actually auto-fills a car complaint when you search it then it generally means that the problem is a big one. A global one.Similar opinion? Write a review on ProductReview.com.au!

Junk !!
We have a 2000 city Olympic version with 134k's: what a heap of junk. Air con dead: Engin coils issues: ecu issues and the list goes on: and holden service : worst than ever
Will never buy a holden again: Toyota corolla will be the replacement to have something reliable and durable

As a non-mechanic, completely agree. I've had almost all of them
We had ours towed away to wreckers last month. Finally died, engine wouldn't crank up and everything else failed: go Holden: we just purchased a corolla hatch which I am sure will provide years of motoring unlike the astra

Absolute Rubbish!
I purchased this car two months ago, on the third day of driving my 2002 Holden Astra CD sitting at the set of lights the emission light came on, I pulled into a car-park and when I stopped my traction light came on. I decided to drive it around to test out what was going on, it wouldn't allow me to accelerate faster than 40km/h. After sitting at the side of the road turning off the ignition and starting it up again only the emission light had come on, where I proceeded to try and accelerate the traction light came straight back on again. When ...Read more
this was happening the car was chugging and the vibration through the car horrendous! So after 3 days on the tow truck it went, arrived at the Holden dealer where they replaced the computer and coil pack. Picked the vehicle back up and two days later again without fail all the same things happened again! So a mechanic from Holden picked up the car to avoid the towing fee and gave me a courtesy car. I got the car back after 3 days at the workshop replacing the coil they had just placed in with a genuine coil pack this time (which they apparently did the first time). Well, again 1 day later same thing happened again but this time on a Friday night. Saturday morning, drove it up the street to test it and this time only the emission light came on, parked the car up and drove it again 20 minutes later to drive home from a friend’s house where all the lights turned off and it drove perfectly! All weekend it drove fine. I then drove the car on the Tuesday afternoon and the same thing happened again stuck out on the side of the road, this time I arranged the tow truck and it has been in the mechanics coming 3 weeks now. On the second week of them having the car we rang them, we never got a phone call about them receiving the car and never told us on the first week what is wrong with it or how it can be fixed. On that same phone call the mechanic said that he doesn't know what to do but he reckons he was close to fixing it. He said on that exact phone call that he would call later that afternoon, which was 6 days ago and we were still waiting for that phone call and I was still without a car. After the third week had passed onto the fourth; my mum got into contact with the owner dealership and demanded a refund which we have since received a whole refund for. A few days after asking for the refund we got a call from the owner dealership again and he had informed us that the car was fixed after some research he had done himself. He spoke with the mechanic to get it fixed and surprise surprise the car never was fitted with a genuine Holden part once, hence the problem occurring over and over again! Even being told the car has been fixed we didn't want to take this car back with all the problems we experienced with it, we have lost all faith in purchasing another Holden Astra and we are very wary of purchasing Holden itself. Nice to drive when drivable, has a lot of guts, nice steering wheel controls, nice metallic black paint, nice sporty look, neat interior Emission light coming on, traction light coming on, chugging, went through petrol like you wouldn't believeSimilar opinion? 2009 Holden Astra Hatch
I've always had my car serviced by Holden, they're overpriced but didn't want to void the warranty. 2 services prior to new car warranty expiry I noticed the coolant warning come up occasionally on the computer dashboard so had Holden check it out twice and both times they said it was fine. As soon as it was out of warranty and I took it for it's next service they said the sensor is faulty and will cost me to replace it!
I refused saying I had brought it to their attention twice while it was under warranty but they said it didn't show up a...Read more
s faulty when they conducted the tests under warranty. Still refused to pay for it so now I have to put up with a faulty sensor. About 3 months after that service my car was running quite rough and the engine light was staying on so took it back yet again and was charged $400 so they could tell me they couldn't find anything wrong with it and the engine light isn't staying on anymore! Ran okay for a couple of months after that until 19th Jan when the same thing happened again; it was running so rough at one point I struggled to get my car up to 60kmh and now that engine light is back on. Had other minor cosmetic issues also. Stay away from Holden. Seat warmers Engine and electricals. No centre console. Lack of cupholders. Cosmetic faults.Similar opinion? Terrible car
My wife brought her 2007 Sri brand new. My wife is a conservative driver never crashed, i often get mad while driving with her because she is like a grandma. To begin this car goes through a new set of front tyres every year which is crazy. Even if you get them alligned, balanced and get decent tyres they still wear unbeliveably fast.
The car was regularly serviced but not at holden dealership. At 23000 kms a gasket leaked and pumped water into transmission. We took back to Holden an they said it is because we didn't get it serviced by them,...Read more

This was my first Holden car. I will never buy an Astra or Holden again due to this LEMON. I highly recommend others consider these words.
I sold the car the day after the warranty expired due to the engine troubles. The local dealer like us because it gave their service department work. The 5 unsheduled visits plus the 3 sheduled visits meant we saw the service people 8 times in the first 3 years.

first I.e coil pack, ecu (computer), camshaft sensor and just about every other sensor on the engine. Timing belts are due at 60,000kms revised down from 120,000kms due to them breaking and destroying engines due to pistons and valves hitting each other. Head gaskets blow on them, I've lost count of the amount of radiators I've replaced, engine lights are forever coming on. They chew through brake rotors and pads every 20-30,000kms. Rear calipers leak. I could keep going but you get the picture. Made in Belgium and they should have kept them there. You are better buying a 1995-2000 corolla instead.
