My ownership experience
Was the owner of a red 2017 Astra r+ Auto . Bought with 6,500 kays on it from a private seller. I like the design, build and features for the price. Thats where the good points end. I was very disappointed on such a new car the amount of rattles coming from interior trims coming from the dash, door area and seatbelt area. As I put more Kays on it I noticed how soft the paint was with many stone chips. I even had one on the roof!. I had engine problems when going up hills a clicking sound happen like the sound of a piece of tin in a coke can rat...Read more
tling and loose power for a moment or to. The transmission wasnt very smooth you could hear it clunk into second gear and would jolt. 1 year and 20,000km later I decided to trade it in for a older car and lost money as these Astra do not hold there value at all.Purchased in June 2017.

Seriously disappointed
Purchased a 2007 SRi Astra off the showroom floor from Von Bibra Robina. The car was impressive to start off with, but many issues have tainted my enthusiasm over Holden.
All the problems seem to be recurring, but no product recalls at any point!
First the aircon compressor packed up. Took it to 2 different technicians: "Usual issue with Atra." $550 to replace/repair compressor clutch coil thermal fuse.
Then, at about 120,000km the gearbox started whining in 6th gear. You guessed it! Two different gearbox specialists said it was a recurrin...Read more

Better now Holden dont touch it
I could have boght a new car with the money I've spent on it. Without fail every 6 months it cost between $800 and $2000 at dealership to fix. Dudded me an ignition barrel under warranty as they couldn't get it to fault until warranty ended that is. Electrical fault twice a year like clockwork UNTIL I STOPPED GOING TO DEALER.
Been great since taking it elsewhere, no fault liggts just regular servicing and maintenance. Coincidence???? Not likely!!!!
Previous review mentiined front tyre wear is excessive and I'd agree with that but I do ...Read more
like a softer ride and use a bridgestone rally tyre which never lasts the suggested kms but they drive well. If I had my time over I would NOT buy an astra and definitely NOT take it to holden. I always thought a holden would be the best car I could have as the family have had them for generations. WRONG.Similar opinion? Write a review on ProductReview.com.au!

Holden Astra 2005
Bought the car in Feb 2006 new from the dealer has only done 40,000k, the paintwork is now shocking. I have 2 lines down the roof where the paint has faded and peeled off, this is also starting to happen on the boot and bonnet. Holdens Customer Care response (once they saw the cost of the repairs) is that this is sun damage and its an old car !! Really? We have a 15yr old Pajero with no such fading or chipping......but what do Holden care, they have my money now and can hide behind the 'out of warranty' statement. Would never buy another as clearly the paint is not up to the climate the car is being sold in.

Great to drive but not to own!
We bought this 2004 TS Astra CD 1.8L auto hatch new from a Holden dealer. The car was well specified and included ABS brakes and traction control. Had some early quality problems (incl the child lock on a rear door) which were all fixed by the dealer. The car was great to drive with good performance and great handling. The car was used mainly for local commuting. We planned to keep the car long term but an increasing range of unexpected and potentially expensive problems have caused us to sell it now. These included an early wheel alignme...Read more
nt issue which contributed to the first set of tyres only lasting 30,000km. At this time we were shocked to find the front brake pads also needed to be replaced (not cheap!). Other issues included an intermittent dash warning light (traction control?) coming on under normal driving conditions and the aircon/fan not working at all on very hot days! The aircon was otherwise increasingly noisy (compressor on the way out?). The windscreen washers also ceased to function (difficult to fix due to the location of the washer bottle) and the ashtray would not close (spring missing). Much black deposit on the alloy wheels made these almost impossible to clean properly. Lint on the velour seats was also difficult to remove. The car was serviced by the book and the timing belt was replaced as required and we had no mechanical problems. Difficult car to sell with much depreciation! Would never buy another Holden small car!! Great to drive with good performance and handling Poor quality, unexpected repairs and high depreciationSimilar opinion? Problems Galore
My 2008 Astra is second hand first couple years it was fine and around 2 years ago the problems started. It suddenly went dead while driving home TWICE, engine problems, warning lights coming on for no reason, and recently speaking from somewhere my son thinks it might be the suspension.
Big boot, good braking nice sized car.
Everything that isn't the inside of the car

Part problems
I have a loved twin top that had cost me a small fortune with engine chain mounts falling off, roof needing repair etc. have just had cable in door handle snap and am told No Parts are available in Australia for this car??? Holden service excellence? I also checked for recalls as the Holden dealership failed to check. Found 3 outstanding including a brake hose. I booked car back in to have recalls done and was told the car would have to remain off road for up to three months while they sourced parts from Europe but could not guarantee they coul...Read more

Astra 2004 TS
Very basic cars, I owned one for 6 years
Problems include
-60,000km intervals for timing belts. In addition you should be replacing water pump and the kit
-Brakes have to be changed every 25,000km
-Thermostat sensor brakes, leading to overheating, costing $250
-Air Compressor failure
-Trip Computer replacement
-Fan breakdown

There is nothing Holden about this car, it is expensive european junk. Cheap for a runabout but don't expect it to be problem free or cheap to repair. Avoid the OPEL's, just buy a Toyota if you want a reliable and cheap car. Relatively fuel efficent 8.3lt per 100km Expensive and frequent repairs due to a poor buildSimilar opinion? Electronics!
Was a great car when i first purchased the cdx 2dr astra coupe 2007 model, second hand 30000km. Then the problems commenced. In four years I have had two batteries, two water pumps, no horn function, coolant sensor fault, looses idle (auto), failed to start on many occasions (starter motor/alternator/key barrell). All i get told at the mechanics is I bought an astra!
quick, compact car - suited me when i first got my licence

Roof problems hard to fix
I have had a 2008 hard top. They are very heavy however my biggest disappointment is my roo stopped working. Holden can't fix it! I have taken it to one place who spent five hours on it they can't work it out. Then they said to go to another dealer, how hard can it be?

Nice but Costly
Have had this serviced at Motorama SpringwoodQueensland since purchase so it is maintained as per warranty and manufacturer recommendations.
At 10 months batery dies, not covered by warranty, who cares about warranty on consumabkes but a battery should last more than 10 months!
At 18,000 kms had to replace all the tyres, this was recommended by both Bob Jane TMart and Jax independently, had them looked at as I suspected tread looked awfully thin... Went with Pirelli from JAX, never looked back since but that's another review. New tyres on...Read more
a new car lasting <20,000 kms isn't a good signof overall quality. At 23,000 kms had to replace ALL the brakes, apparently these are not rated for more than 25,000 ( we're senior suburban drivers so hardly hooning or performing hard braking. Brakes pads were fine but brake spindles shot, hmm don't think it was due to hooning!Holden mechanic said he'd buy a VW before buying any mid-range Holden, gee that sort of sums up what the technical staff think! At 42,000 kms engine seals required replacing, again not driven hard or for extended duration. Techician just laughed and said it's an Astra.. Sort of sums it up!Similar opinion? I wouldnt buy a Holden again, I think they have too many problems. I sold the car soon after the extended warranty expired (six years).
Good solid car when comparing to athor small cars, good handling, suspension. Excellent braking and handling. Makes for nice easy drving. It's a good size car for city parking and can pack a fair bit in the boot.
Had afew things wrong with it: Had to replace the fuel injectors and key barrel. It took afew visits to the service department to repair the problem with starting up the engine as it would turn over about 15 to 20 times before it would start up. It needed the extra three year warrantee I took up after the problems started.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAR. Has regular problems. Expensive to fix. Also, my experience with Hunter Holden was poor. They over-charge for as little work as possible. They try and over-charge by trying to up-sell the service and accessories.
Its got 4 wheels. Not much else
Where do i start ? Gear box is some cheap belgium crap. It seized up 1 week after purchase. Hunter Holden didn't replace it, but said they bled air out of it, and changed the computer configuration to discharge power slowly in first gear. Should have replaced the gear box. But Holden...Read more

This car would have been a great car if it not for all the plague of problems. i dont think ill ever buy another holden again. i might have to settle for a Jap car as they are more reliable and better built than most holdens.

I got my Astra in 2005, and it is a 2004 model. I had very few problems with it mechanically for the first 3 years, however there has been a constant rattle in the dash which despite several attempts to fix has never gone away! After the warranty period (3 years) expired I've had nothing but problems with it - not major safety things but the car has just needed constant repairs and new parts. The timing belt was the first thing that needed replacing - at the 65000km mark -an expense I was not expecting! Then the thermostat broke, and the engine...Read more
kept getting quite hot so the cooling system had a service and the thermostat was replaced. At my 5 year service, I was told that my front and back brakes needed replacing - an extra $1000 on top of the service. I'm also finding that it isn't as fuel efficient as it used to be, and I'm not driving any differently so it must simply be the engine is not as efficient as it ages. So I'm very dissappointed with the Astra, and I'm looking to replace it soon. The moral of the story - if you own an Astra, sell it as soon as the warranty expires! Nice to drive, good size car for city driving See below...Similar opinion? Write a review on ProductReview.com.au!

Dont buy a Holden
I have an 05 Astra CD. Loved my Astra at first but then stupid stuff started breaking and going wrong, stuff that shouldnt happen to a 4-5 yr old car!
Will prob be trading it in soon as Im worried more stuff will go wrong with it.
Cheap on petrol, quite roomy inside, good size boot for a hatchback, smooth drive
Where do I start.. air con died when the car was only 3 yrs old, then it was the coil pack needing replacing which cost in excess of $600 to be replaced (both the air con and coil packs are common Astra problems), then it was the brake rotors that needed replacing, and the Astra brake rotors are very expensive. I was quoted from $600 to $1000 to get these replaced.

0 bucks later on repairs including a replaced fuel pump and diagnosis, no one could find the issue. We had to trade it in and lost a lot of money.
