Great start but failed after that
We had a VERY good start to our journey with HomeStart but unfortunately, once it got to the construction stage it all went downhill.
1. 2nd bathroom and the location of the mixer and spout. In the plans, it was meant to be in the middle of the outer wall side of the house. Dropped by the house one day only to find it had been placed at the end of the bath nowhere near where we wanted it. No phone call, we have an issue, they just stuck it there and I had to initiate contact with them about the issue. Then it's like we will just raise a variat...ion to leave it there? Sorry, the mixer and spout need to be as per the plans, please. We ended up coming up with a compromise and the spout (upgraded to a swivel spout) was located where we wanted it and the mixer offset at one end of the bath. The communication on this issue which was early in the build was concerning and to not even be offered an apology or the options to resolve it was extremely disappointing. The alternative would have become very messy if we pushed for wanting it all to plan. 2. Feature wall out the front of the house. I had a feeling it was going to be a headache, it was and is still yet to be totally fixed after a couple of goes at it now by the builder. It was leaking on both sides of the feature wall out the front of the house initially. Two goes to fix the right-hand side and the left is still leaking as I write this review. There is also another leak nearby that’s dripping out of the corner of the roof near the feature wall, unsure if its related as yet, but that is yet to be addressed as well. Got a building inspector in to have a look during the Practical Completion Inspection and there is a bunch of rubble still left in the guttering on the side that is still leaking, I am no expert but I would think that this could possibly cover up issues and needs removing to fix up the leak. 3. Door frames not totally painted, badly painted frames with what looks like sand in the paint on the garage door frames, this is not sand that has blown up by wind or something either. Paint on the brickwork and when offered an explanation about the lack of paint on the top of the door frames in the garage it was like well, we might get paint the bricks if we pain them, well don’t you tape it off 1st so that does not happen? 4. Then the door handle saga that is currently happening. The theatre room has double sliding doors, I don’t know about anyone else but when you have door handles fitted do you not expect to see them on both sides of the door? Well during the inspection we noted they were only fitted to the outside and there was nothing inside, so I got the building rep to stand inside the room and I closed the doors and asked them to exit the room. Well, they were lost for words initially and then said they would look into it. Been a few emails back and forward so far, sigh.

Extremely poor quality build
Ok so the list of things that were wrong when they tried to hand it over:
1 wall was on a slope of approximately 15mm over 2.4m
2 sections of gutter slopped away from the drain pipe and held between 15 and 20 mm of water
The interior walls looked like a 2 year old had put the white set on.
Half of the doors weren't fitted correctly and captured the latch
The roof extended into the gutters to the point it was touching in some places
Tiles were cracked all over the place
Bathroom floor tiles had no slope and held water.
When approached about one of the issues not meeting Australian standards the building supervisor commented "that might be how it is done on the east coast but we don't do it like that over here" ...Dealing with the building supervisor was absolutely hell they sent out a guy twice that had no idea what he was doing and made an absolute mess of the wall instead of fixing it. In the end i had to fix it my self not even the after sales maintainance manager wanted to touch it. In saying all this the customer service in applying for the loan and the client liaison manager were always pleasant to deal with, It is just terribly sad that the end product was such a poor quality product due to the lack of knowledge/skill of this particular supervisor and his manager. I would recommend anyone using this company to get a 3rd party building inspector and not settle until you are happy. The maintainance team are reasonable to deal with but did in the end require a "i am about to loge a complaint with the building commission" phone call to get them to respond.
We just started with homestart. They were amazing until we paid the deposit and signed the pre-contracts. That is already 2 weeks ago and nothing, but literally nothing happened since!
All changes to the design seem to be over expensive. So instead of getting an entry level cheap house, it even starts getting pricy. But worst - I am not given any info to base my decisions on....
After reading these reviews, I am considering to swap builders as we are at this very early stage. Anyone out there who would pm me wirh whom they h...ave been dealing so that I can compare experiences? Anyone out there who has swapped builders? How much do they charge? Do they make trouble? Please, please answer ans help me, I couldn't bear a whole year of trouble! initially thought they are inexpensive and quick... well it turns out they are neither, proposed building time is 12 months???
Lack of communication
I am currently building with Homestart. At first they are really nice. I started building with them and first of all they delayed my survey and applying for building licence by almost 7 weeks. I have encountered afew ladies at homestart who take over two weeks to reply emails. when you call and leave your name and number nobody bother to call you back.
Am surprised some of you have had an advantage of getting updates on your development. In my case its a struggle to even talk to anyone in that office.
Word of advice, find a builder who treat...
Overall, they were just passable, and we wouldn't use them again. In the end the additions that we had to make probably meant that we would pay a similar price going with a more upmarket builder that include a better standard of fitting from the start.
Nice home designs, ability to change the plans however you wanted and only pay for the increased build cost (i.e. no re-drafting fee). Low cost. Reasonable build quality.
Promised a construction time of 27 weeks, ended up taking 18 months. Said that they wouldn't be affected by materials shortage...
the first part was great, until the wrong information was given to us therefore costing us extra in time to get things done. once our paperwork went to the council we didnt hear anything until we pestered them. then after that nothing but trouble, the lack of communication about what is happening was annoying. Also it seems that the reception staff do not pass on messages. The only way we got any reply was through direct email, which they will give to you if necessary. currently we are finding problems since we have moved in but seems to give a...temporary solution not fixing it so they dont have to come back again. Staff were friendly, worked within what we could afford to build, visiting us at home for first meetings were not a problem lack of communication, misinformation, no phone calls being returned

If you have had a home start loan in joint names 30 years ago can you reapply as a single after being divorced for 28 years?
We build new homes for our clients. Are you perhaps referring to Homestart in South Australia who provide loans to people or perhaps Keystart here in WA?
