Worst mower
Absolute rubbish. Bought this one online and had it delivered. Too heavy!
Automatic choke sticks and it won’t start after using for a while. Have to remove the filter and use a screwdriver to poke in it to open it and get it going again.
Can’t adjust the throttle.

Piece of overweight Junk
So. After 14 years of running a GMC mower with a Briggs and Stratton mower I decided it was time to purchase a new one. This old GMC has been trashed to hell, left out in the rain for years, only serviced once and it is still going.
I wanted quality as I do some part time mowing as a side gig.
I was initially going for the Honda HRU19M2 Buffalo Premium Lawn Mower but then decided to pay an extra couple of hundred bucks for the Honda HRU196 Buffalo Pro Engine Brake as the warranty is better for a contractor.
I find the 196 too heavy and underpow...Read more

Bad mower. Doesn't cut. Doesn't catch.
Worst decision in a long time. Thought I'd buy a premium mower at more than $1100. Only thing good is that it starts easy. I upgraded to 4 blades from 2 and still does not pick up the grass, just blocks the tiny shut for anything more than the smallest cut..... even in the dry! Very heavy for a push mower. I am so frustrated with the mower that I now mow/mulch and then hand rake up the grass!!!! I was told the motor is commercial grade, maybe it will last, however, it is not powerful and when the grass is thick the safety blade brake starts to slip!!! Once it has started to slip it generates heat from the friction and slips even more!

I regret my purchase decision
This is my third Honda lawnmower.
Every mower has got progressively worse.
Current one won't start and has always been difficult to start. If you are lucky, you may be able to find a Honda HRU150 in good condition. This is the one that Honda established its reputation on and has not been able to produce one as user friendly or reliable since.

First time I have purchased a Honda Lawn mower and I am very disappointed.
Same as other reviews, the shoot continually blocks and doesn't pick up the grass clippings. I mow my lawn every 2 weeks when its is dry, and it is still a burden. It also seems to be under powered and I have returned mower to dealer in Bunbury W.A. regularly complaining of low throttle speed, as I thought that this was the reason for grass blockage, nothing has improved. Also my clothes continually get caught on the protruding throttle cable guide. Very disappointed. It is no longer a pleasure to mow my lawn.

Terrible product - with narrow Shute !
I purchased a new Honda mower about 18 months ago , thinking it would be a great product - which is often used by professional tradesmen. Boy was I wrong ! It turned out to be the worst mower I have ever owned. With the narrow Shute it was constantly getting blocked , then not picking up the grass. I agree I let my lawns grow a little long at times and some times the lawn is damp - but this is no excuse for the mower getting blocked at the rear chute every 2 minutes.
I was so sick of this problem , I recently traded it after only 18 mo...Read more
nths of ownership, taking a $500+ loss. The dealers all seem to know about this problem and many many customers are complaining about the same problem . I really think Honda should have corrected this problem at no charge to owners. Be warned about this dodgy product! I have now bought a new Honda with same engine , with the old fashioned fully open rear design (Herritage ). The way it used to be ). Fingers crossed this is also not a lemon!Similar opinion? Avoid Honda Mowers At All Costs
I bought a Honda Mower thinking I was getting a top quality product that professionals used.
For a couple of years I have mowed my lawn, the catcher rarely has grass in it as the chute clogs and the mower just spays cut grass all over the lawn.
Extremely angry that I have paid double what other mowers cost to buy something has a major fault in design, I didn't know this until I read reviews that others have left to say they too were having the same issues.
Avoid buying when mowers half the price would do a better job.
The one good feature o...Read more

I hate the narrow chute and bag catcher...cloggs up all the time and PVC catcher is mutch better...the older buffalo 196 were a magnificent machine with the wide chute and PVC catcher..never buying a narrow chute mower again ever...go back to the old style mower...a lot of mowing contractors agree with me..

Had another fun day with this $1000 piece of crap yesterday.......and yes Honda lady the grass was dry........not short though (the reason I was cutting it) but still had to manually clear the pissant little chute by hand no less than 4 times. Not bad for 160 sqm of lawn.

Can't stand using my lawn mower
This mower is truly terrible. At the very slightest hint of moisture in the lawn, it simply blocks up and you need to stop mowing and clear the blockage. This gives you another 5 seconds of mowing before it happens again.
The little amount of cut lawn that does make it into the bag simply falls out onto the ground once the bag is separated from the mower because of the bag design.
I have seen the responses on other reviews from Honda celebrating the introduction of the Heritage mower that apparently doesn't have these faults. The only pro...Read more
blem is that Honda customers have already spent a lot of money to purchase our current lawn mowers which really don't work very well, so what are we supposed to do with the mowers that we have already bought? Saying that the solution is now spend a 2nd bucket of money to buy another Honda product when the first product doesn't work is disingenuous. If Honda cared about it's customers it would initiate a recall and do a voluntary swap for the Heritage if it indeed doesn't have these faults. Currently the worst product I own and I regret buying it.1 comment

Reliable engine, Solid body -chute gets blocked sometimes
On looking at mowers I first saw a Honda advertised for 599 or 699. I thought wow a Honda thats not too expensive. However I discovered the GC engines on the cheaper Hondas have a plastic cam shaft! (look it up on Youtube) Yep you get what you pay for in this instance. I had 2 Honda powered generators, both powered by GX engines and never missed a beat. So upon learning about the plastic inside the GC engines I chose this one because its got the old school GX engine in the Long Rang version. My lawn was 2 feet high in some parts when it arrived...Read more
, Got it tidied up on less than 1 tank and its a 900m block. After reading all the horrendous reviews on this site of the major brands and my own experience with them I researched the Hondas. Glad I found out about the GX engines. Got mine for $1159 and some free oil and most importantly which oil to use. And they are assembled in Australia! Ok Thought of a few bad points - When mowing without the catcher on it does block up from the chute sometimes. This is because the exit Chute for the grass is only half or less the size of the back of the mower - yes I know! Well I read this is because they use the same chassis for the one that is self propelled and has a gearbox. So there is this space thats blocked off. The catcher guard at the back is also made of plastic. In the old days that would have been steel. Anyway, still glad I got it, starts first go and if I'm mowing without the catcher I just lift the mower up a bit on its back wheels an it drops the grass. Sometimes I have to unclog it by hand. Having the blade disengaged via the blade break is reassuring here. My mum had a Victa that only lasted 12 months then would not start. Took to mower shop got fixed (Carby), then only lasted a month. I then tried to fix it but couldn't get it started. So I didn't want a repeat of that. Thats why I chose the Honda. I know, not perfect but where can you buy the perfect old school mower, with a decent engine ? Sounds like a business opportunity! Good Luck with finding whats right for you. December 22nd 2016 Update: Constipated mower i.e. full of crap (Chute gets blocked ALL the time) I'm writing this because my previous review can't be edited. Almost cut my hand off unclogging the thing. (Yes it is possible even with the clutch). It will drive you mad if it doesn't cut your hand off.2 comments

Commercial mower, but doesn't do the job
I gave up using my 196 - having to stop so frequently to unclog the chute meant I was taking longer to mow each yard than I should, therefore losing valuable work time. I bought a $300 Makita that does as good a job cutting, without the clogging issue. I can buy and throw out 4 of these before I spend what I have on the 196.
The repeated comment from Marketing Dept about wet or long grass doesn't make sense to me. A commercial grade mower should be able to withstand whatever is thrown at it - not just lawns that lie within a 'regular mainten...Read more

Brilliant motors, Stay away from Black motors(from China i have been told)
One star for the Motor, which is brilliant.
Now for the bad: Widen the Chute to full. Which means move the gearbox up and forward-so than all decks are wide chutes. The little Honda's are absolutely useless. We need mowers to pick up grass, that is what they are for. Do not get fancy and turn these into front wheel drive(4x4 yes) but not front wheel only, because when we turn at the end, we lift the front wheels.

Today I stopped buying and recommending honda push mowers
Honda Power Equipment you have lost the plot with your mowers.Useless clutch adds 10kg & complexity. The half blocked shute design is stupid.Look like they have been designed by a Uni student who lives on campus and has never mowed a lawn. Why take a great product and turn it into a useless crapbox.Went into Dealer to buy two HRU196D mowers today.Looked at them and thought it was a joke.
The new design handle mounting bracket.
Uneeded heavy clutch.A shute that I couldnt pass wind out of.

Worst Mower Ever
The Honda HRU21 Self Propelled Mower was sold to me as the "Must Have Mower" for the commercial operator. I have had the mower for 3 months and used it 6 times. As a commercial lawn contractor I mow lawns most days. This mower is the worst I have ever used!!!!!! It is the most heavy, cumbersome and back breaking piece of equipment I have ever used. Please....do not buy one. The mower is impractical and extremely overpriced. The drive engagement for far too "abrupt" and the drive wheels leave divots and marks. This is mainly due to the excessive...Read more
weight of the machine. I cant stress enough how ridiculously heavy this machine is. In addition, Honda's after sales service was terrible. When I raised my concerns they said that I should be cutting grass at the highest or close to the highest blade setting. That's not real helpful! Easy to start but arent all brand new mowers. Far too heavy. Drive system engagement far too abrupt...Leaves divots and Marks every time it is engaged.2 comments

ushes itself. If also found it did leave divots in its tracks if the ground and lawn was really wet, but nothing that doesnt stand back up by the next day. Sounds a bit like the problem was the operator not the machine. Just my 2 cents worth i found it cut alot better and smoother then my previous self propelled model. Plus the automatic blade brake when you take your hands off the handle bar is great because you dont get heaps of dust blowing in your face as you remove your full catching bag of grass.Yeah right Jack. Nice to hear from honda at last.

When i purchased a top of the market product i expected it to do a top job, it hardly does. why have honda put that stupid shoot on it?. it clogs up with the shortest of grass. the catcher is hopeless because it gets 1/4 full and the chute clogs up. any moisture just adds to the pain, the enguine is spectacular though, always easy to start and never stops. so why honda do u put a great engine on a poor base???.

Terrible
DO NOT BUY A HONDA if you have a decent patch of lawn that needs to be regualy moved, buy the 7hp Rover instead.
It is a very well built machine and the starter and motor have not missed a beat in the 2 1/2 years since purcahced, but over all I do not like this mower.
I have a very robust large buffalo grass yard and it is simply not up to the job. It has given me nothing but headaches, for the price it simply should be better. It stalls on the thicker patches of lawn and the catcher clogs up at the entrance before it is full. I have taken it back to have it serviced but it just doesn't have the power for any decent patch of grass.

I suggest you talk to your local friendly Honda dealer who may be able to source a new part for you or may have old mowers around that they can scavenge parts from to repair your mower saving you more money. They get plenty of very cheap trade in mowers ,many of which are handy for spare parts.Give them a call.
Thanks for your help Paul.
