Expensive but worth it if it lasts
I was encouraged to get a Honda by a friend who used to run a lawn maintenance business. Looking at the different models, I went through a "well if I'm spending that much, I might as well spend a bit more and get the one with extra feature..." period and ended up with top of the range for $999. It starts very easily, seems economical on petrol and hasn't used any oil in the six months that I've had it. It's also quiet which I like as it seems to make the whole task less onerous. I rarely use the self-propulsion as my lawn is flat and I can get a bit of exercise. But I hope the lawnmower lasts a long time, by which point I'll be old and doddery and will appreciate it more.
Purchased in at Bolton Motorcycles for $999.

I'm blown away by this mower
I have a sloping 1,400 sq. metre block with multiple levels. After many years of persisting with my trusty Kubota 5021 self propelled mower, I warily upgraded to the self propelled Honda HRN216VYU 21". Thankfully the experience is way beyond my expectations. There is simply no comparison. I literally complete the job in half the time with the Honda. The mulch is many times finer, so that it actually falls to earth between the grass blades on first pass, rather than sitting on top and getting picked up on people's shoes for the next several days...
Read more. The motor is twice as powerful - I am almost at jogging speed, yet the deck doesn't show signs of choking, nor the engine overloading, and I never have to go over the same area twice. I love that there is a single adjustment lever for both front wheels and one for both back wheels. The Kubota had one on each wheel and they were each very difficult to shift, but on the Honda they are simple to operate and don't slip when you bump into something. The blade release/brake is such a good feature. I can start the engine in long grass, then start blade rotation. Then I can stop blade rotation when lifting the rear to manouevre around awkward garden beds. The deck is all solid metal contruction, but the mulch port is plastic. I don't see any problem with this as it helps keep the mower lighter - and it is noticeably lighter than the Kubota. My only gripe is that the rear wheels are quite small for a mower of this size, and they do tend to bog down and spin in soft or wet conditions. Maybe I'll fit some larger rear wheels at some stage, but it really hasn't been much of a problem. Other than that I am surprised at some of the negative comments. I'm so blown away by this machine I kind of look forward to using it! I only wish I'd taken the plunge sooner and saved myself a lot of time.Purchased in for $999.

Does a decent job
I've had this a bit over a year. I bought the non propelled model because we had quite a steep block with lots of turning and manoeuvring.
Overall it does a good job of cutting the grass, it is easy to start and has good fuel economy.
It is quite heavy which I certainly noticed compared to my old mower and if I was buying again I'd probably aim for something lighter, particularly on our terrain.
It struggles in long grass where the engine will stall until you put up the cut height. It drove my father in-law nuts when he used it but I'm use...
Read mored to setting it at the right height. My biggest complaint would be that I can't get the handle high enough, I'm 6'6" and it really is too low and can't adjust higher. I would recommend this mower more to those with flat yards who have the time to mow regularly so they don't encounter really long grass too often.Purchased in for $750.

Plastic fantastic, useless piece of junk
In summary - total JUNK, paid $1k and the self-propelled drive belt comes off every second mow, bloody awful plastic yankee mower, been a Honda fan all my life - NEVER HONDA AGAIN, please let me explain.
Firstly I’ll say I never voice my thoughts on these forums, this indeed is a first. But I’m so annoyed with Honda’s response I’m putting my thoughts down so hopefully someone else won’t get caught. I bought a Honda HRC mower HRN216VYU to be precise, it’s the ‘better than Bunnings’ self-propelled one with blade brake (doesn’t cut the engine ...
Read morewhen you stop mowing), and is one down from their ‘contractor’ range. Candidly as I’ve found out, it’s plastic fantastic – and a total piece of rubbish. It is a total LEMON.!!! I wouldn’t be so annoyed however on the second mow it stopped self propelling. Just dead. And you can’t push it. So after 65 minutes of mowing I was left with no option but to take it back to the dealer under warranty. Only trouble, I’d just moved away from Melbourne and relocated in Kyabram. The dealer, who was fantastic by the way, took one look at it and shuddered and said ‘imported rubbish’. He followed up and I quote, ‘this model is made in America and we won’t sell them, most of the country dealers refuse to touch them’. He explained they are full of plastic which regularly breaks, the drive mechanism is belt driven (and is frankly bloody awful), and if the blade hits anything major it bends the spindle which goes all the way through the engine, and if that happens throw away the mower. After he inspected it 4 days later he pulled out a tiny nut from the drive belt, it was wait for it - 4mm in diameter.!!! Absolutely tiny. Said Honda wouldn’t warranty it and the charge was $260, however as a gesture of good faith he’d let it go. He explained this was one of reasons no country dealers touch them. Seeing is it had chewed out the belt, I ordered another one for ‘just in case’ it snaps, and went home very upset. It lasted the rest of that mow, but on the very next one it went again. I downloaded the dealer manual and after 3hrs had it working again, by this time I was seriously annoyed.Purchased in for $906.

Worst mower I have used
Unless you have a bowling green flat lawn, the weather has been dry, and you cut the grass yesterday - this mower will struggle. The single improvement it offered over previous machines was the exceptionally low moise levels. End of positives.
This is in no way a self propelled mower, even though it is sold as such. I coaxed, cajoled and outright heave-hoed this rudderless gripless machine around a sloping block for ~50% longer than my recently deceased 35 year old Kubota 5021.
Any small depression or bump was sufficient to render the drivin...
