A different BBQ with a grill, no plate, but good

First of all I have been using this BBQ for 3 months so I am quite familiar in how to live with it. It replaced a large 4-burner that had gizmos and trays and side-burners and unfortunately lots of cast iron inside.

What is it: It is a gas BBQ that only has a grill. It does not have lots of bells and whistles, but what it is designed to do, it does it very well. I wanted something simple and that is exactly what this is. No gadgets, just grill food over a flame. Delicious.
Size: Easy to grill for 8 people, probably would struggle if doing 10 or more
Looks: Does not take up a lot of room and is very stylish. Would be good for balconies. Does get very smoky which is fine for us, but depending upon the position you put it in, that could be a problem. I will explain why it smokes.
Cooking: We cook chicken, lamb, mushrooms, zucchini, marinated pork and sausages of all types and sizes. We haven't cooked big beef steaks on it yet. As it is a stainless steel grill over shielded flames, it cooks pretty fast and your food will easily burn if not attended to. The flames have a removable arch that protects the grill from the direct contact of the flames. Everything is high quality stainless steel, so this is a good design that works well with vegies and meat. However, the meat drips onto the covers which means that a significant amount of smoke can be produced as that fat or other bits are cooked forever. Not a problem for us, but could be a problem for some. This would apply to marinades too. AS there is no plate (and no option to buy a plate), you cannot cook eggs or onions, etc... so you would need trays to do this.
The hood: The hood is very good, you can see your cooking whilst it is closed, however it does get very dirty easily and you will need to clean it with hot soapy water to keep it transparent. The hinge quality is high like all other components of this BBQ
Cleaning: The burners are protected by the removable arches so they dont get dirty, are easy to clean and the burners remain untouched. Excellent design. Below the burners is a flat base with a hole in the middle. It needs more slope for items to move to the hole, so it retains a lot of junk. However, with the arches out there is good access to scrape out the junk and most matter is easily removed. The hole in the centre leads to a removable tray which mainly captures liquid fat as the remainder stays in main bbq box above. Easy to remove and then you scrape out the fat and wash under hot water and it is like new. All of this is enameled stainless steel.

I am not a massive BBQ expert, but it does appear that this BBQ would need to be cleaned after every MAJOR use (feeding 6 people for dinner for example). I don't mind and it is pretty easy to do. However, I know a lot of people just like to give their plate a scrape whilst its hot, then close the hood and walk away until next use. Those people will not like this BBQ. Those people would find that this BBQ goes rancid!

I bought this because the BBQ is simple, and is made using high quality materials. However, I think the next version of this excellent BBQ would be greatly improved if the base below the burners has a steeper angle into the hole and would benefit from a non-stick surface like Teflon, and the grill should at least have an option of a plate where part of the grill could be removed and replaced with a plate.

There is also a BBQ cover, I am less than impressed by this, it is designed like a fitted sheet and is just as difficult as a fitted sheet. A few markers to indicate which way is the right way would help and maybe another centimeter of material so that it is easier to slip over the BBQ would be welcome. I usually swear and say horrible things when I am putting this cover on. And there are no alternatives. Once on, it is a snug and attractive fit.

Overall - a great simple BBQ for those who understand what they are getting (and what they are not). If you want a plate or a BBQ you clean once every 6 months - then this is not for you. But for those that want their meat cooked on a grill with that yummy flame/smoke flavour, and dont mind the 15m of cleaning the next day, then this baby is up your alley.

Would I buy again ? Yes, I would.
