You can feel the strength of the truck when you drive it. While driving it you realise just how reliable it is , and , won't give you troublesome motoring. With a 3.5 tonne towing capacity, it shows you how capable it really is.
Not a bad truck, but the service is beyond sub-standard
We have Quite a few Dmaxs in our fleet. The staff love driving them and their not a bad truck on the whole. We have dealt with most of their dealerships within the BNE area and have found their service completely sub standard (not all but the vast majority to be completely accurate) to any other manufacturer we've dealt with in the past 25years, and some of those have been pretty average. I could write a list here a foolscape page long of the comedy of errors, failure to return multiple phone calls no matter what the enquiry is about (standard...practice), forgetting to book service dates into their system, supplying unregistered loan vehicles (yep you heard it), ordering of parts to fit can take multiple visits and a massive time waster (perhaps Isuzu work order HO failure?) to name a few. If They could get their stuff together they would be seriously good alround package, but I'd say the culture is well imbedded and will be difficult to break. Sad really as they seem a good truck. Just don't be afraid to go further afield and look for better service from your chosen dealer because they're not all cut from the same cloth that I know for sure. When you start hearing that circus music.... run!!
Great ute. Very economical and capable of tough tasks
My vehicle has the Pedders GVM upgrade which does result in some rigidity in the ride when empty. However when loaded to capacity, this vehicle doesnt miss a beat. Very stable. Full loading barely affects fuel economy either which was a pleasant surprise. 800km from a tank of diesel is no problem. Very reliable versus Ranger and much better value for money than Hilux. Great farm ute overall and highly recommended.

Filter Price Discrepancy
The Isuzu Dmax is s great ute can't fault it, good features and excellent mileage, it has a timing chain and no belt like other Utes the auto is worth looking at and the ride is comfortable the down side is the service costs.
Here's the facts I like using Genuine D-Max filters and discovered the original OEM version were released along with the 2012 D-max and are expensive and over double the cost of the new type re-released and sourced OEM filters
I found the cost as of FEB 2017 :
Oil:$14.39 part no.D*5876150000
Fuel:$30.11 part no.D*...
A solid performer - strength not flashy
The 2012 model was restricted to 3000 Kg towing and 300 kg tow ball weight and had 4 star safety rating. Later models acknowledged the competition and upgraded the towing capacity to 3500 kg and tow ball 350 kg. The trucks are solid. The 3.0 litre Mitsui engine has been produced for a long time with minor modifications to meet increasing emissions requirements. The 2017 model I understand will see further tweaking of the engine to meet these requirements and some changes to grill, lights and basic interior upgrades. The engine and body are s...olid, at 78k kilometres I have had no issues, upgraded the suspension to allow for an increased constant load (should've considered a GVM upgrade at the time) added steel bull bar and winch, canopy drawers and I still get 9.3 km /l around town and closer to 10 km/l on the open road. Plenty of power down low with lots of torque a great package for the price. New model would benefit from a few bells and whistles to be competitive but a great basic truck.
The best 4WD & family vehicle
Beautiful car to drive, handles the road smoothly not bumpy at all like other 4WD's. Interior is nice and simple in a charcoal, comfy seats, it's a pity the back seat isn't a splitting seat as it would make putting car seats in a lot easier. Very reliable car, a full tank of diesel gets us about 850 kilometres we do a lot of highway driving. She handles off road like a dream, beach driving was very smooth.
Dmax problems from new
the car is basically is ok its never broken down but Iv'e had constant problems ,the clutch was replaced at 5,000kms
problems with alloy rims balance from new never fixed, the cam chain tensioner was replaced at 10,000kms because of a major rattle in the motor (it didn't fix the problem) I was told to run a 5 weight oil, it didn't fix the problem I had Isuzu Australia (Queensland) come to Newcastle to inspect the car I was told every thing was with in tolerance don't worry about the noise (if I wanted to sell the car no one would buy it if th...
Have now had my D-Max for just over twelve months, have towed our navigator camper for a few 000km in that time and have been rapped with it, great fuel economy, tows like the van is only a very light trailer not the 1.7 Tonne that it is. Have had it in 4 x 4 mode a few times and it has done every thing that we have asked of it.

By far the best ute I have had
Purchased a new D-Max LS-T in April 2015 through my Novated lease company after previously having a Navara 2.5TD (which is another horror story). I did a fair bit of research against all the other double cab utes on the market (incl Chinese and Indian). Some had a greater torque output, others with better 'offline' acceleration, comfort etc. After test driving nearly all of them, the D-Max won. It was the only true 3.5t tow capacity, in that you could still take passengers, have a full fuel tank and a bit of a load and still tow up to 3.5t. Aft...er towing my caravan with the Navara and achieving a mind numbing 35l/100km, the D-Max came in at 15l/100km which automatically convinced me I had made the right choice. On 'normal' trips and around town, am getting under 9l/100km which is pretty good. I use this ute for work and travel about 45,000km/yr, it is very comfortable, has been super reliable and feels safe on any road. Even tried the Fitzroy Development Rd between Taroom and Banana in CQLD with ESC disengaged and engaged and found the later was rock solid. Have had to use low range a couple of times both with the van and without in some tricky bits, other than the annoying beeping when in LR, this ute just climbs out of everything with minimal fuss. Am about to get new tires after 74,000km and will be opting for the Bridgestone H/T that it came with as they give me the traction I need when I need it and the low noise and comfort on the highway (where most people drive anyway). Only negatives, occassionally get a steering knock on rough roads which hasn't developed further, but will monitor. The fuel gauge light comes on followed by the level bar flashing which gives no indication on when you will actually run out, previous vehicles have counted down the kms, this one just says "low Fuel" using the mileage dash display which can be unerving when 50km+ from a servo. Also the GPS mapping is next to useless, sends you on paper roads, takes the long way and ETA's can be 30-40min out on a 200km trip. Fortunately the Garmin I have is great. The LS-T has all the bells and whistles, leather, video dash, GPS, Blue tooth etc., etc., so I am spoilt, but would easily recommend the LS-U these days to anyone who wants a workhorse and weekend toy.
Problem with radio reception
After sale service from dealer and head office was appalling no one ever returns a call .After i had the problem fixed by a radio specalist and gave the dealer the bill they sent it to head office who refused to pay .After 4 x radios and 3 x areials the service manager paid the bill but i had to fight to get a warranty problem fixed and paid for .Not very happy with dealer or head office.
Ok for what it is
I have a 2015 diesel D Max company supplied car and had a 2013 diesel model previously. The dash layout has been slightly revised with the clock moving from the instrument cluster to the centre console and is now part of the stereo display. The stereo comes with surround sound which is weird because there are the four front speakers two in the doors and two at the base of the windscreen A pillars and one feeble speaker somewhere in the rear as the D Max I have is a crew cab. The gear ratios have been changed slightly but unfortunately the 5 spe...ed gearbox hasn't. It still has trouble selecting the right gear and is better if used in it's manual mode. Even slowing down to turn into another road in manual mode sees the gearbox moving from 5th down to 4th and although able to pull successfully in 4th a manual change down to 3rd gives a far better response. In Drive touching the brake pedal lightly on a down grade sees the gearbox shifting down but reapplying power has the car revving until the gearbox changes up to 5th or has me doing it manually. The ride is quite good but the seats are terrible being too flat with little to no support. Like the last one there is no carpet just cheap plastic/rubber lining. Dash plastics are cheap too with squeaks. Unlike the last one there has been no mechanical problems with this car and it now has 32,000km on the odometer. Like the last one the key fob is still over sensitive and locks and unlocks at random if other keys on the key ring touch it. The wipers on this one come with variable intermittent control with 6 settings. But there is no gradual progression from maximum time between wipes to the minimum time. From the maximum time to position 4 there is no real difference but positions 5 and 6 are the minimum times. Having had two of these cars I feel they're built to a price rather than up to a standard.
After service is terrible including head office
Purchased a new dmax, and within 2 months the dealer closed shop at city Isuzu. Had issue with the bars on the vehicle and have been trying to resolve the issue for months. Head office in QLD was just Terrible. Considering we have a fleet of these at work we will never be purchasing again!!!
Very reliable. Does what it says it will do..
I’ve had my 2014 LS-U D’Max since July 2014. It's a reliable work horse and has never given me any trouble. I’ve travelled to outback NSW and QLD, up to the gulf country, mostly on dirt and corrugated roads.
The engine and auto transmission Isuzu have used in this truck are proven performers and I’m very happy with the level of comfort it provides me on those longer trips. Sure this model doesn’t have the climate control, touch screen LCD monitor and other bells and whistles the other manufactures are offering, but that’s not what I was a...fter. I was looking for reliability, safety and longevity. I'm very happy with the handling of the vehicle considering its size. The noise of the diesel is clacky when sitting at the lights, but its an old school diesel, and to be honest, I kidda like it. Towing has never been an issue and will carry my off-road camper with ease, almost to the point I don't know its there at times. It has around 65,000k’s on it now, and not even a rattle. When I first bought the vehicle the fuel economy was pretty good, and was very close to what the manufacturer stated, once I added the bulbar, winch, canopy, roof racks, aux battery, fridge and toolbox, that all went out the door. However, around town it’s still around the 10 litres per 100km, and doesn’t move much from there even out on the highway. Again for the weight I’ve added, I’m happy with that. I have recommended this vehicle to friends and two of them have bought the 2015 model. They're also very happy with there choice.
Love the D Max.
This is the second Isuzu LS-M D max that we have bought and could not be happier. The power is ample and the towing with our 2.9 tonne van is carefree and safe.
We have averaged 12.4 ltr/100klms over the 20,000 klms that we have travelled since purchasing the vehicle in December 2015.
The interior is adequate and is easy to keep clean with the vinyl floor and the dashboard is workable an easy to read.
Keep up the good work.
IT'S REALLY A LUCKY DIP
Bought 2 d-max's bot really god cars except one Is a lemon firstly power steering was lost and isuzu told me they didn't have time to fix it next thing ya know new car warranty is expired, had an issue with the master cylinder (NOW I REPEAT IF YOU LOSE PRESSURE IN YOUR CLUTCH JUST REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER DON'T FLUSH DONT RECOND JUST REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER) lost my clutch and ruined the 5th and rev synchro so that's being rebuilt atm the second dmax I got I haven't had one problem with it, I will put my hand on my heart and say it's an ...incredible vehicle besides the rear leaf springs upgrades are recommended. Performs awesomely off road but first you'll need min 2" lift, and some decent tyres possibly front and rear lockers once two wheels leave the ground you won't get too far, but after owning Triton's, rangers and hilux's I would recommend the dmax I think they are amazing machines with all the comfort you need for a work vehicle
Fuel gauge/ range estimator
Have a show special 2016 d max which when 1/4 full of fuel leaps around giving a range of 210 to 150 to 200 then low fuel etc., all in the space of a few Kms at steady speed, gauge also goes off the screen, then reappears.
Isuzu not helpful dealer trying hard to get reason, other owners I have spoken to have not had the problem, even 2 dealers unaware.
Isuzu state can only fix if a problem, their correspondence is woeful.
Hesitant to get uhf, reversing camera fitted and draws/ sliders fitted in rear until resolved.
Great Ute, Love it
Have done 10,000Km. No hassles great ute to drive on long trips, comfortable ride, fuel varies from 8 to 9.5L/100km. Plenty of leg room, could easily fit 3 kids Seats in the back. Dislikes, the side mirrors make objects look soooo far away I don't see cars sneaking up behind me, also needs mudguards at the front of the rear tyres as they throw mud onto the side steps. Overall just love this ute so much I convinced my parents to buy the M-UX which they enjoy as well. I don't know of any real bad points to say about it. Would definitely recommend to anyone, family, tradie, farmer.
Very poor hand brake.
Probably the worse hand brake I've ever looked at. Parked on my drive which is a 1-4 slope. Sat there for about 4 mins and then ran away hitting my house. Narrowly missing one of my boys. Isuzu and dealer washing there hands with it saying it driver error not putting hand brake on properly. The rachet and pawl in them is very poorly designed. If the rest are like it it's only time before someone gets killed. Don't let it be your kids.
2015 D max . Would not buy or recommend
2015 D MAX 35,000 km. Timing chain rattles badly for around 4 or so seconds, until it builds up oil pressure. The model before had the oil filter upside down, and the thought was the oil would drain out and the filter would have to fill up again to build up oil pressure for the tinning again to tension up and stop rattling. I have late 2015 model, my oil filter is down below and horizontal so the above is does not apply, but sound is the same. This happens if it's been turned off for as little as 20 mins. Oil used 15 w.40 and now winter 5w ....30. Just to see if the thinner oil helped. It does not. The thinner oil now rattles after being turned off for a few minutes. Been told to live with it. Gear box the same. When cold the gear box clatters until driven for about 6 ,7 km to get oil around. If you start the Ute cold , say outside temp 5 degrees . It will start to rattle and clatter and get louder. Letting it sit and warm up won't get the oil around. It will just get Louder. It has to be driven to stop the rattle. It's a waste of time trying to warm up a diesel anyway on a cold day I doubt it would get to operating normal temperature if I let it sit there for the whole day anyway. Let it idle for a couple of minutes let the oil get around let a little bit of heat get into the cylinders and then drive it is the best way to warm it up. Oil recommend is 15w 40 engine oil. I have put 5w30 full synthetic and it's still the same. Made no difference. Push the clutch in and it stops. It's the Gear box not the thrust race or clutch fork bearing which ever you choose to call it. It's the gears clattering. The rest of the Ute is great. I just don't think a new car in 2015 should sound like a old 1920 tractor when started. Any way that's my 2 cents worth.
Great vehicle and well built.
It is an honest work vehicle with very little of the refinements that other manufacturers offer. For example it has a functional plastic-vinyl floor covering, a basic bluetooth with steering wheel control of the radio/ CD player, but no GPS is offered.
You know that the engine is diesel from the "clatter" at idle, but the noise isn't intrusive. The seating could offer more in the way of adjustment and lumber support, but it is acceptable for now. I'll know more after our first trip away just how comfortable it is.
We've bought this as our "tu...
Destroyed our lives, frustrating vehicle and company
Purchased a 2014 Isuzu Dmax XRunner in april 2014. And it has been hell ever since. Ive lost count the amount of times its leaked oil, and I have lost count of the amount of time it has spent in the dealership being "repaired"only to get it back and have it leak again. Not only that, the body kit seems to come away from the body, the ute liner lifts and bulges, the gearbox knocks and rattles (although they say this is of "normal operation") the clutch squeals and rattles and the oil pressure fails to build up (again - they say its normal!) This...vehicle will end up costing us nearly 100k in finance and is now worthless. The amount of times its been in the dealership is more than we have spent driving it. Its resulted in us, purchasing a Toyota in order for us to have at least one reliable car. If we had known what we do now, two years ago, I would of stayed well clear of Isuzu. Its not worth it. They fail to fix it, fail to accept its a lemon and fail as a company
Why would you buy anything else!
I looked and drove them all VW, HILUX, RANGER ,NAVARA and went with this 3.0 not over turboed like the rest of them and a very reliable isuzu engine, I'm sure the biggest truck builder in the world knows how to make a good diesel engine plus I wanted the engine to be built by the manufacturer and not some out sourced outlet like the rest of them. Also be wary of dodgy reviews from toyota trolls on this site there not hard to catch out if you read very carefully.
I bought the HI RIDE 4x2 for $29,900 drive away auto, compared to 40k for the other...

1st Ute terrible, second Ute Great.
When l first picked up my ute in January of 2014, a New 2013 Dual Cab, Isuzu Dmax Tray back Ute from Toowoomba, we drove out west about 1000 ks, and then headed back east, did a few trips like this while we moved home and towed a new Westbrook Trailer.
On the second trip hubby said 'there is something wrong with the suspension' and we took it in for an early 3000km check up,
'Nothing Wrong' said the service guy, we this went on for another 20,000km with repeated phone calls, emails, and the 10,000km service.
Nothing wrong my foot!, l got si...
Bilstien suspension recommended &fittedby Dale at Ballarat Driveline has transformed a perambulator
Great easy going drive.lt was a dissapointing old cow of a ride until l got the suspension done-guess though the bullbar & winch out front contributed, but these were dealer fitted,as was the uhf arial that fell off half way home from its inaugaural Christmas day Ballarat Bendigo return trip,at least the half tightened up dealer fitted canopy didn't come unstuck despite lossing one fastening compleley- got some nyloc nuts and lock nutted the others that were all done up not much more than finger tight- did the arial attatchement myself but negle...gted to check the assembly of the arial itself which came apart loosing it on a dirt track-luckily after organizing a search party it was found by some keen eyed young campers who were duely rewarded- l reassembled the thing and backed it up with nito elecrical and grey duct tape with specific instruction at the 3000 k service that no one was to touch it, apart from when checking all fastenings holding on the bullbar and winch-happily the workmanship of the oppositelock crew owned by lsuzu Ballarat was satisfactory, despite the work being done at the Holden workshop/ oppositelock shop.It has a great turning circle but driver allround visability is poor- the bulky front pillars are a liability at intersections, causing approaching vehicles to be hidden from vision unless considerable excessive rubbernecking guesswork is performed- motorcyclists& pedestrians ect.- beware of lsuzus "going thier own way" 75 litre fuel tank good for 900 ks or 600 working hard towing.
No problems what so ever, towed 22ft caravan no problems, great fuel economy, turbo diesel, great d

Questions & Answers
Is the 2016 Dmax a great 4x4
Bit too broad of a question sorry Gudge. Depends on what your comparing it with and what your using it for. The clearance isn’t great, the only traction aids off road are a terrible outdated traction control system. No rear limited slip differential or locking diffs. Reliable engine but probably the least torque (380Nm) of its class for the year. I’ve owned a 2017 (430Nm) since new, modified the hell out of it (diff locks, canopy etc) taken a lot of places including NSW, NT but mostly VIC high country and I wouldn’t go near Isuzu again. Poor build quality, average performance for premium price and disgusting customer service if anything goes pear shaped. Reliable engine though so they say
Thanks ill stay way
The rear differential has failed again for the second time is this a problem when towing heavy loads I use my D-max for work daily towing a concrete pump
