Quite disappointing for a 2016 vehicle.
Purchased a '16 lsu s/h in 2018 and drove 1000km home, almost couldn't walk (stopped for short sleep on way), the seat comfort, or should I say lack of comfort is unbelievable - I can compare directly to my other 2 vehicles, both of which were built in the '80's, a hilux and a volvo respectively. and they are way ahead.
The suspension doesn't help either, and, yes I am familiar with how utes should ride having owned a 4x4 hilux with heavy suspension for almost 30 years - when I can afford it I will be replacing the entire suspension - but with ...
Purchased in June 2018 at Isuzu Mebourne for $40,000.00.
It's got its good points and not so good
When people call it an honest workhorse, they mean devoid of creature comforts and rough as guts. And maybe tough. Which closely describes my 2016 D-Max LS.
I have had mine for three years now since brand new.
No recalls, no major issues or breakdowns, all issues are due to its character.
Jumping right in: It really likes to rev before changing gears unless you are Sunday driving. In reality, the useable torque seems between 2400 and 3000rpm. It does not make sense why the ECU/ECT allows it to frequently rev past 3000rpm before ...

Is the D-Max a genuine tradesman type vehicle
Brought a 2015 D-Max Space Cab with alloy tray as a replacement for my 2010 PK Ranger (still the most reliable 4WD I have ever owned). The D Max is fitted with a steel bull bar (dealer fitted) and from day one vibrated. The whiplash was so violent when you hit rough roads that it snapped off 2 High Gain mobile aerials attached the bull bar mounting. The dealer has never been able to resolve the issue. In my opinion I think the steel bull bar is too heavy for the front suspension. Solved the issue of the High Gain aerial by shifting it to a fend...er mount. The next issue was the whole passenger side of the vehicle developed a 30mm lean. The dealer initially claimed that the vehicle was not loaded correctly. Put the vehicle on a weigh bridge and the loadings on front and rear axles were within the specifications and the total vehicle weight was at 72% loading. (tray rated at 1000kg). Rearranged the load (vehicle has a constant tray load of about 600kg) to no avail. Dealer could not resolve. Vehicle developed a vibration through out the drive chain that even at idle the bull bar and spotlights shuddered. Despite investigations it was never resolved. The vehicle has travelled 140,000km now and the motor is starting to shown signs of getting a little tired. The blue tooth connection is also failing despite a request to the dealer to investigate which was never resolved. Despite its shortcomings it has always had a good fuel consumption (approx 10l / 100km) and the ride is very comfortable. The space cab area is quite surprising in how much equipment you can fit. If you are looking a smart looking ute that sits on the driveway from Monday to Friday looking good then go camping / fishing or bush bashing on the weekends then it would suit your needs perfectly. As a hard working tradie ute carrying a constant load maybe not so.
Purchased in March 2016 for $40,000.00.
the Isuzu canopy is no good , after 3 years the side glass on the r h side of lift up window started to come out of holder, Isuzu would not fix it as canopy is warranted for 3 years or 100,000 km, the repairer told me the frame is buckled and needed a new one. so I will have to keep window closed.not good enough when vehicle is 5 years warranty ,I had it back to Isuzu a few times to stop it leaking .
RUST AND GEARBOX PROBLEM
Bought my single cab tray back new in 2013 to tow a trailer as a mowing contractor. Late 2016 had problems with gearbox, jumping out of second gear on steepish downhill runs. Took a year to get it fixed. Around the same time noticed trim on front of bonnet bubbling. This was accepted as warranty fix, but still waiting for it to be done, getting plenty of reminders about service being due, but no mention of bubbling trim being fixed. Have also had rust coming through on the wheels, and chassis, noticeably on the welds. Service manager has starte...d making excuses, stating that the vehicle has been exposed to corrosives. Vehicle has only ever been used to tow trailer on road. My own driveway is dirt, but my feet and shoes have not corroded away yet.
Seatbelts lock when you lean forward, pick something up from the floor or go to adjust the mirror. Isuzu says it's a safety feature but as an end user I say safety issue. You have to stop and undo the belt and let it retract right back before putting it back on and its illegal to stop on a motorway. IDIOTS!!!!! Had other issues but can dealt with those as things that just happen!
Not a bad truck, but the service is beyond sub-standard
We have Quite a few Dmaxs in our fleet. The staff love driving them and their not a bad truck on the whole. We have dealt with most of their dealerships within the BNE area and have found their service completely sub standard (not all but the vast majority to be completely accurate) to any other manufacturer we've dealt with in the past 25years, and some of those have been pretty average. I could write a list here a foolscape page long of the comedy of errors, failure to return multiple phone calls no matter what the enquiry is about (standard...practice), forgetting to book service dates into their system, supplying unregistered loan vehicles (yep you heard it), ordering of parts to fit can take multiple visits and a massive time waster (perhaps Isuzu work order HO failure?) to name a few. If They could get their stuff together they would be seriously good alround package, but I'd say the culture is well imbedded and will be difficult to break. Sad really as they seem a good truck. Just don't be afraid to go further afield and look for better service from your chosen dealer because they're not all cut from the same cloth that I know for sure. When you start hearing that circus music.... run!!
Dmax problems from new
the car is basically is ok its never broken down but Iv'e had constant problems ,the clutch was replaced at 5,000kms
problems with alloy rims balance from new never fixed, the cam chain tensioner was replaced at 10,000kms because of a major rattle in the motor (it didn't fix the problem) I was told to run a 5 weight oil, it didn't fix the problem I had Isuzu Australia (Queensland) come to Newcastle to inspect the car I was told every thing was with in tolerance don't worry about the noise (if I wanted to sell the car no one would buy it if th...
Ok for what it is
I have a 2015 diesel D Max company supplied car and had a 2013 diesel model previously. The dash layout has been slightly revised with the clock moving from the instrument cluster to the centre console and is now part of the stereo display. The stereo comes with surround sound which is weird because there are the four front speakers two in the doors and two at the base of the windscreen A pillars and one feeble speaker somewhere in the rear as the D Max I have is a crew cab. The gear ratios have been changed slightly but unfortunately the 5 spe...ed gearbox hasn't. It still has trouble selecting the right gear and is better if used in it's manual mode. Even slowing down to turn into another road in manual mode sees the gearbox moving from 5th down to 4th and although able to pull successfully in 4th a manual change down to 3rd gives a far better response. In Drive touching the brake pedal lightly on a down grade sees the gearbox shifting down but reapplying power has the car revving until the gearbox changes up to 5th or has me doing it manually. The ride is quite good but the seats are terrible being too flat with little to no support. Like the last one there is no carpet just cheap plastic/rubber lining. Dash plastics are cheap too with squeaks. Unlike the last one there has been no mechanical problems with this car and it now has 32,000km on the odometer. Like the last one the key fob is still over sensitive and locks and unlocks at random if other keys on the key ring touch it. The wipers on this one come with variable intermittent control with 6 settings. But there is no gradual progression from maximum time between wipes to the minimum time. From the maximum time to position 4 there is no real difference but positions 5 and 6 are the minimum times. Having had two of these cars I feel they're built to a price rather than up to a standard.

1st Ute terrible, second Ute Great.
When l first picked up my ute in January of 2014, a New 2013 Dual Cab, Isuzu Dmax Tray back Ute from Toowoomba, we drove out west about 1000 ks, and then headed back east, did a few trips like this while we moved home and towed a new Westbrook Trailer.
On the second trip hubby said 'there is something wrong with the suspension' and we took it in for an early 3000km check up,
'Nothing Wrong' said the service guy, we this went on for another 20,000km with repeated phone calls, emails, and the 10,000km service.
Nothing wrong my foot!, l got si...
Big mistake, buy something else.
Gearbox issues from new. Gearbox notchy and noisy. Changed oil and it was full of metal Rebuilt the box, got the car back and it was worse. Eventually got a new gearbox, got treated by servicing department like I was the problem. New gearbox got noisy, sold the car after just 1 year lost $12,000, good riddance.
Good Mechanically . Poor paint Quality . Sub - Standard Seats
Great Drive . Good Towing . Completely let down by the drivers seat falling apart after less than two years .
Dealer and customer complaints department not interested , claiming it is not a warrenty issue but due to Ware & Tare . How can that be on a ute that is not even a Tradies vehicle
2013 LS-M dual cab. Wouldn't buy another one
Purchased dec 2013. 5 speed manual. Gear shift is dodgy, feels sticky changing through gears like you have to force it in gear, got told by Isuzu this is normal, even though I drove another and the gearshift was fine. Passenger seatbelt locks whilst on and has to be undone to rectify. Front seats are shaped like a banana (closest comparison) so they force your back out and your neck forward, have to lean it back to use. Fuel consumption is good 8.3/100. Keys are super bump sensitive. No auto light turn off and key hole doesn't light up. Sea...t belt, 'light on' and 'key remain' beeper and grammar drives me nuts. Especially when you're on property opening and closing gates and chasing cattle. They are not that quiet inside whilst driving, appears to be window noise. Towing, I feel they're a little gutless when you need the power, definitely would not be towing 3.5t with it! Up side. They travel well and handle various roads and basic off road situations quite well, surprisingly. And they look good. I'll see what the Isuzu warranty people will do with any of the above, but as you have read with problems above the likeliness of purchasing another one is lining up pretty close to 0.
Not impressed with its lack of guts.
I have had Isuzu d-max single cab two drive for just on 12 mths,NOT IMPRESSED,Engine is noisy at low speed,I have a 5 speed manual you have to take it to around about 3000 revs to keep up with the traffic,on the open road or highway if you want to over take a slower vehicle traverling around 90 to 100 kms you have to change to 4th gear to get around them or it just does not happen, before I bought the d max I had a Madza BT 50 2.5 litre turbo diesel, it had 100 kilawatts, the Dmax is 130 kilawatts, but the Madza would crap all over this one. Fuel economy is good, comfort is fair, ride is fair,it is able tow 3 ton,on the flat yes, hilly country it would really struggle.
10k Replacement LS-M
This 2014 model has now got digital press button dash display...pain in the [censor word removed]. 09 model was easy and effective to change. How does "Elapse time" help me drive? new model has steel rim as spare so now unless I replace it with an alloy, I cannot rotate it every 10k to maintain even tyre wear among all 5 wheels. No rear speakers in the doors even though the ports are there!!!! Dust ingress is more evident around doors.
Gear box VERY notchy from 1st to 2nd gear, most times crunches. Must make low rev change very smooth and carefully.
I will not speak kindly to others considering a D-Max. Was very happy with 09 model........why did they mess with it?
Poor warranty backup
Questions & Answers
Is the 2016 Dmax a great 4x4
Bit too broad of a question sorry Gudge. Depends on what your comparing it with and what your using it for. The clearance isn’t great, the only traction aids off road are a terrible outdated traction control system. No rear limited slip differential or locking diffs. Reliable engine but probably the least torque (380Nm) of its class for the year. I’ve owned a 2017 (430Nm) since new, modified the hell out of it (diff locks, canopy etc) taken a lot of places including NSW, NT but mostly VIC high country and I wouldn’t go near Isuzu again. Poor build quality, average performance for premium price and disgusting customer service if anything goes pear shaped. Reliable engine though so they say
Thanks ill stay way
