The JR Rail Pass is convenient but not economical

The increase in the cost of the rail pass meant that it was not economical for us. We had used it on a previous trip and found that we saved money and time but this time we lost $500 by buying the 21 day green pass, even though we felt we used it a lot. However, it was very convenient and saved us lining up at long queues to buy tickets. We did notice that there was less choice in trains using the pass especially as the Nozomi is most frequent train but excluded from the pass. This often limited available trains. We would not recommend it to others.

JRP Pass not flexible enough

Limited use through, Yamanakako and Osaka. Was difficult to find the right train to use for where we wanted to go so ended up buying individual tickets on other trains. We did pay too much for it. Plus the need to select your own number of days should be an option. Not a set 7, 14 or 21.

Worst experience ever

I bought the expensive ticket expecting I can go anywhere with it. But I can’t use it to go to Mesm and whole heaps of stations in Tokyo. Very disappointed. I bought 3 tickets for my family, I reckon I overpaid $500 aud as the tickets are not effective with all lines.

Fantastic service

Great service and a fantastic transportation system - absolutely loved it. Only downside is not being able to book seats online. Stations are always crowded with queues for the booking machines.

Cost effective and easy to use

Even with the recent increase in costs I have considered the Japan Rail Pass the best expense of my entire trip.
Was extremely easy to use in train stations, easy to book train tickets and JR rail office staff were very helpful.

A great way to travel

Simple to activate and to use. We purchased the 7 day pass for a 9 day trip and chose not to use it for the first two days as we were going to be in Tokyo. It did mean we had to pay to get from the airport into the city but that was ok.
As we went in peak tourist season, we reserved all our seats on the Shinkansen which very much worked to our advantage as the trains were packed - we had tried to change one reservation to an earlier train but we couldn’t get seats.
If you know what times you will be travelling, you can reserve all your seats at once. Makes life easier as the lines at the Shinkansen offices in the stations are long! You can’t reserve the seats on line.

Stress free

JR Pass is amazing if using public transport system all throughout Japan. No hassles buying tickets, no queues, just go through & jump on. Do yourself a favour & get Green Class.

2024 Japan travel

Great experience using a 14 day pass but had to used extensively to many places with the new fare rises.
This is my second experience using the pass however my only comment is not understanding how to distinguish between JR train network and the other private operators. We travelled from Niigata in the north to Hiroshima in the south and made good use of our pass.

Bullet trains are fantastic

Easy to use and well worth it if you are travelling in Japan. It would be great if digital version was avail as I always worried about losing the paper ticket.

Maybe ok

It’s awesome but very confusing when traveling around with JR Pass and the fact that not every place accepts this! Next time I’ll just buy at the station instead of forking out $1600 for 2 adults and 1 child (12 years old) for 7 days!

Useful but complex

It was super useful having the card but it is tragically complicated to use and plan as they don't have a dedicated scheduling site you can see only the JR lines. So you waste time between Google maps and the train line list to see if the suggested route on Google works for JR.

Highly recommend train travel using JR pass

Exceptional service in all cities. Getting the JR green pass was well worth the extra money. Trains are immaculate on both bullet trains and local JR trains. Once you get the voucher exchanged it is easy.

Perfect Companion to have in Japan

Cannot understand what drove the significant price increase to the cost of JR pass in Oct 2023 but, it is worthwhile to purchase it if you want to travel long distances within Japan. We travelled from Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima etc and it is definitely worth when you end up saving so much time! It can also be used on JR local trains which is an added bonus.

Must for Shinkansen travellers

You could buy it in the airport on the ground floor if necessary. However, online order is required using their WiFi and your smartphone. Still a very good value for money if you plan to travel several times by Shinkansen. Now it is straight through the gates with no need for extra ticket at stations. Seats reservation is recommended, however, it was OK to travel in non-reserved carts. You can find some JR lines in Tokyo outside of Shinkansen which allows you not to pay extra for local in-city travel.

Easy travel across Japan

Easy to pick up and use. Be even better if it could be downloaded to mobile rather than holding a printed card for each transaction.

JR Pass 7days

It was good value. Didn’t find out until later that if you buy on line you can make bookings on line. This would avoid queues at tricket offices and machines.

Everyone needs to experience Japan Rail

Japan Rail enabled us to visit many different locations . We are from Australia , the service, and the helpfulness and efficiency is fantastic … Australia has a lot to learn. We travelled one day to Okayama with our granddaughter and when exiting the Shinkansen a part from the stroller fell down onto the tracks. We spoke to the team at the station and they went out of the way to assist saying that when the trains stopped running they would access the line and find our part . They sure did and sent it direct to where we were staying the following evening. Thank you JR and please pass on our gratitude to the staff at Okayama station. Everyone needs to experience Japan Rail

Fabulous

I booked the Green pass for a week to travel from Tokyo to Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka. I loved the simplicity of the JR Rail pass for all our travel. Really appreciated the assistance of the staff at all the station ticket offices they were all helpful, patient and did their best to assist us. Thankyou so much. Also when I booked I didn't quite appreciate how I could use the JR Rail pass for JR metro and JR Ferry travel, so was pleasantly surprised. I think it was very cost effective.

Essential to see the country

Very helpful if you plan to use shinkansen extensively in your travel plan. Too expensive to mix with bus or car rentals.

Great trains and service

The JR trains and service is amazing. It was confusing about the JR lines vs the local lines. You could use it only on the Tokyo underground and needed an IC card for all local services. We bought 14 days but next time will just do the 7 day pass. Not sure if we used our moneys worth. It may have been better value to just to buy each sector. We never managed to use to booking system - always had to queue at the counter.

JR Pass

The JR Pass was great for our family of 4. We spent 2 weeks in Japan travelling around using the train lines.
The JR Pass was great because we did not have to have to book any train tickets, we just used our JR Pass. You need to do your homework to see if the JR Pass will be suited for your needs.

Worked Perfectly

Used several years ago and used again. Received the Exchange Order promptly. Ensured customs stamped Passports (they were very familiar with the process). Exchanged and submitted the date we wanted to travel. The staff at the Exchange office spoke English which made for a seamless process.
We used on the Shinkansen several times, metro (JR) around Osaka and Tokyo. Very easy to use and still value for money. Highly recommend if you intend to move around a bit. The information received regarding the use of the JR pass, Travel Tips and Digital Guide was fantastic.

A very good transport pass

You can use it on all JR lines and it takes the hassle out of using the ticket machine. It is a simple process to exchange the voucher you receive to a ticket like pass that can be used for the duration of your travel over the days you purchased it for. Be very careful not to loose it, as it cannot be replaced.

No longer value for money

Unless doing extensive long distance travel, the price of the pass is no longer value for money. Also with travel on different metro/ subway lines in cities, still have to buy multiple tickets.

So easy to use

While I had to wait about an hour to exchange my voucher for the JR Pass, using, booking, changing and navigating the Japanese rail system was a breeze (I was really worried before I left because it seemed complicated). The Rail system just works and between google and Navtime we had no problem making connections. When travelling from popular cities such as Hiroshima and Kyoto, recommend booking outward bound trip when you arrive to ensure your preferred timeslot

Waste of money

For the amount that you pay, the JR rail pass is not worth it - you can get to Japan and pay for tickets at the stations and it is much cheaper. In order to make the green pass worth the money (or the normal pass), you’d have to do close to $100 of travel a day, which you would struggle to do. The pass only covers the JR lines (there’s only 5), so you need to still pay for travel on the lines that aren’t JR and there are a lot of those. Understandably, this information can be found before you go, however, given that this service is one of the first that is advertised when you research travel in Japan, I was unhappy with the amount I spent and didn’t feel it was good value.
