Great for long distance travel

published

The rail pass was great for all the long trips but didn't serve much use in osaka and tokyo for all the local trains. Still had to spend load each day on getting around.

But all in all super happy with the trains and the service.

Improve the exchange voucher

published

The pass is great.

It would be even better if we could just get the pass and be able to book before arrival in Japan. We waited nearly 2 hours at Haneda office to exchange our vouchers, including almost an hour before the office opened. With the number of aircraft arriving early in the morning, isnt an earlier opening at that office and maybe Narita warranted?

Also we could not book any trains until we had the pass, which meant we could not get seats we would have liked... even though we knew what train we wanted 2 weeks beforehand.

Very user friendly and can be value for money if you have plenty of travel in mind. Rail is the only way to travel in Japan a very easy and punctual service.

Definitely a money saver

published

The pass was very useful and got us all around japan for two weeks. We definitely saved money using the pass. The only negative was the fact you couldnt use it on some bullet train lines which got a little confusing.

Effective rail pass.

published

It as stated in on line advice. It was OK to pick up and authorise at Shinjukum, it was recognised by railway staff in all stations we visited, reasonable value for money.

Very convenient but a bit confusing

published

We bought passes online and was amazed that vouchers did turn up within 3 days by express post. Changing the vouchers to passes took about 1 hour in the queue and there was another form to complete. Using the pass was sometimes a bit confusing as some legs accepted it but others didn't. Overall, still glad we got the passes as it was value for money and saved us having to buy individual tickets for every leg. I would recommend :)

Very efficient once you have it!

published

Its worth the efficiency when travelling to not have to buy tickets each time you want to travel by train as all locations are accessed by train, the lines and the trains are exceptionally busy and I think it would work out cheaper in some cases to buy the tickets each time however its probably not worth the tassel or waiting in lines each time.

Improve

We needed to be able to book seats on Shinkansen before we left Australia as it was to late when we arrived and spent most of our travel standing up. We paid for first class because we are older and wearing out so this was a major problem. Other than than as always the staff were great

Very good value

published

Generally works well and is very good value overall.
The small white printed sheet confirming your itinerary in English once a booking/s is/are made is very helpful.
In the JR Stations it is not clear which queue you should join to exchange your travel pass - this could be improved.
If you manage to book a reserved seat, it is a comfortable experience. If you are standing, it can be very much less so. This happened often during the Rugby World Cup

Unnecessary ..Queuing

published

Off 10 hour flight had to wait over 1 hour for JP Rail pass Narita airport to Tokyo Ticket.
Was so tired did not order next trip.....2 days later waiting 1.5 hours for other trip tickets.
Only to be told later that I had booked a seat on a cancelled train(was cancelled when I booked it--but not advised)
Waited another 1 hour to move cancelled ticket from PM to AM Ticket same day.
Only to be told later that all train that day was now cancelled (Typoon)
I do not understand why tickets/ seats can not be booked online like plane tickets ?
With Phone SMS message for cancelled trains & advice.

Getting more expensive every time we need it

Last time we had 10 days for two for 680 and this time was seven days for two for 840. What happened between 2016 and 2019 for the price hike

A necessity if travelling in Japan

published

Great for anyone wanting to travel Japan on the railway. Easy to use and a money saver.
Worth paying the extra for Green pass.
However, would be great if you could choose something in between the 7 and 14 day pass. Stayed 10 days, which wasn't worth paying for the 14 day pass, but needed a one way back to Tokyo which was costly on its own.
Staff was always very helpful.

Unclear what trains can't take with pass. No extension despite one day of 7 day pass lost due to Typhoon Hagibis.

published

Had to get off empty train pointlessly despite it going where we wanted to arrive in 20 mins. Had to pay to get back to Tokyo the day after Typhoon Hagibis even though all trains had been cancelled the day before. Small print issues very poor.

Absolutely required if moving around Japan

published

The rail pass is a must if you intend to move around Japan a lot during your stay.

I recently stayed for 11 days and purchased a 7 day pass. In the first 7 days I used a bullet train at least once a day as I moved to different regions. Having the pass made this an absolute dream and I'm sure it saved me a bunch of money.

I did stay some time in Hakone which required a separate pass so that was an additional cost to consider.

The final 4 days of my trip were in Tokyo and I feel that if you are just staying in the city it would not be necessary to have a pass. The city metro is very easy to understand from an English speaking background.

Needs to allo booking from home before you arrive in Japan

published

Need to do what Eurail does -allows bookings from outside of host country including booking seats and posts tickets before you leave home -Japan rail system is too cumbersome and needs to be modernized.

Overall a good way to get around Japan.

published

It is a good value for money way to get around Japan if you are going to do a lot of travelling. The only problem I had was using them getting back to the airport where I did not know I had to book, as usually you can just use them without booking. The cue for the booking desk had 30 people in it and took 25 minutes meaning I missed the train I wanted to get on and only just made my flight.

Fantastic way to see Japan

published

I found the JR Rail pass a great affordable way to see Japan. The staff are friendly and helpful. The timetables and maps are easily accessible. The trains themselves are amazing! The only criticism would be sometimes it is hard to find a JR office to book in your seat in smaller places, an online option would make it even better but I understand this would be difficult.

Take a while to get a hang of it and not necessary useful if only stay within one city. Great benefit if travel to different city and best to spend more than 5days to be worth a week JR pass as it is quite expesnive otherwise

A MUST FOR JAPAN TRAVEL

published

The Japan Rail Pass is well worth the money if you are planning to travel around japan there are unfortunately a few pitfalls, the pass does not cover buses that travel on the expressway and the time that the rail system closes. For example we watched the rugby at Toyota City and left the game 15 minutes early to get to Nagoya in time to catch the Shinkansen to Osaka unfortunately the last train left at 10.17 pm so we had to use the Nozomi which cost us $200.
All in all it is worthwhile but be aware of the times for travel otherwise it could cost you a lot extra.

A must have to travel in Japan !

Easy to get, easy to exchange, easy to travel with. The only thing that’s not that that easy when you are a traveler: seats reservations when you don’t know when your up to next !
Price is better on this website then in Japan.

Good for bullet train

The rail pass is good for catching bullet trains, you save money on that, however we still had to buy a lot of general tickets to get places that didn't have a JR line.

A must for a traveller to this wonderful country

published

Despite being expensive The rail pass was so convenient and useful for a visitor. For the 6 days we used we may not have got the money back but it made life so much easier in the busy, crowded but organised and efficient rail system.
