Hi, I’m using Karicare for my 10 week old baby.
How much thickener do I be adding to a 150ml?
Hard to measure 3/4mls you using the scoop. Can I just use half a scoop? Or is this too much.
Also - is the thickener added after bottle has been made with formula or can thickener be added at the same time?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Michelle, For a 150 ml feed, you can use 3/4 of a scoop of Feed Thickener which equals 2 + 1/8 teaspoons. You can adjust the amount according to your baby’s needs. It is advised to add the thickener to the formula just before feeding. Heating and cooling can change the thickness/consistency of the milk. Hi my daughter is 6 weeks old and currently on nan lactose free, my question is, does the Aptamil thickener contain any lactose?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Dodz, the feed thickener is free of all milk products so no milk sugar (lactose) in there. Reflux is not a symptom of lactose intolerance so it would be good to chat further with you about what is happening with baby. Call us at the Careline 1800438500 Cheers Sue Careline Nutritionist

I am using Avent Anti-colic bottles with the fastest (size 4) teat and it seems to be clogging the teat and he's having trouble drinking it. I'm using slightly less than the recommended amount as well. I used the same with my daughter 2 years ago and never had this issue

I need to thicken babies expressed milk to a specific thickness for dysphagia issues. The stable thickness seems to finish at the 30 minute mark but preparing this for immediate use during night wakes isn't possible when I have to wait 30 mins for the correct thickness. Am I able to prepare in advance and put in fridge in preparation to heat when baby wakes through night for feed?

Ashleigh M.
Ashleigh M.

Note I've tested thickness when left and it stays consistent after early preparation, refrigeration and heating. Just making sure it is ok to use for any other reason.

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Asleigh, we generally advise to use formula within 1 hour of preparation. With the addition of Feed Thickener, this adds more complexity so please call us on 1800 438 500 so we can discuss this with you, kind regards Hilary

I'm using with expressed breast milk not formula. Does that change anything?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Ashleigh, Once cooled and then reheated the milk with thickener will thin and will then need to stand to thicken again. This product is not designed for dysphagia but for reflux. You would be best to talk with your health care professional on the best product for use with baby. Cheers Sue Nutricia Careline.

Do I use feed thickener in every bottle? And how much should I be using in a 120ml feed?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Milly, Aptamil Feed thickener only thickens the milk in the bottle to which it is added so you will need to add it to each bottle where reflux is an issue. As you've seen, the feeding guide suggests to use about 1 scoop to 200mls of prepared formula but you can add as much or as little as your baby needs- you can also use parts of scoops as this isn't a formula. Into eg 120mls of milk, start by adding about 1/2 scoop and increase slowly as needed. As the milk gets thicker, you may also need a faster/variable flow teat. Thanks, Hilary

Hi there,

Can you please advise how much powder I need to use to make the gel to give to my exclusively breastfed baby. She is about 5 kgs. Completely understand I can mix the powder with boiling water to make a gel paste and give before and during the feed. Just not sure how much she should be having? Thank you!

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Anthea, as you've seen, the feeding guide suggests to use about 1 scoop to 200mls of prepared formula or breastmilk but you can add as much or as little as your baby needs- you can also use parts of scoops as this isn't a formula. As you are breastfeeding, you can make this into a gel. Add a few drops of either cooled boiled water or expressed breastmilk to the 1/4 sc of Feed Thickener to make it into a paste that has a consistency of yoghurt. With a clean finger, smear this into the side of baby's cheek so it goes down with the breastmilk when baby starts feeding- adjust the volume as needed. Please reach out to us on 1800 438 500 if you would like to have a chat about this. Thanks, Hilary

Are you able to pre mix cooled boiled water and thickener together into a gel consistency ahead of time to help while out and about ? Trying to use with every feed to see if it helps reflux in breast fed baby

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Mellis, yes you can premake the gel and take it out and about with you. We recommend you make it up first with warm preboiled water or EBM as it mixes best in warm liquid. If you need more help please contact us at the Nutricia Careline - ph 1800438500 Cheers Sue

Hi Leish, Aptamil Feed Thickener needs to be added to each bottle. As you' may have seen, the feeding guide suggests to use about 1 scoop to 200mls of prepared formula but you can add as much or as little as your baby needs- you can also use parts of scoops as this isn't a formula. We’re on day 2, adding half a scoop to 140ml of formula, and her vomiting is the same, if not a little worse (she threw up mid feed with the bottle in her mouth). How long should we give it to start working?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Laura, you could try adding 3/4 of a scoop of Aptamil Feed thickener to 140mL of formula. We do expect the Aptamil feed thickener to work straight away or at least see some improvement. Could you give Careline a call at 1800 438 500 or email nutriciacareline@danone.com? One of our nutritionists or dietitians will be able to assist and find out if there is another reason your little one is still vomiting using the Aptamil Feed Thickener. How much thickener would I use for 150ml bottle?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Angel. You can use as little or as much as your baby needs. You can also use parts of scoops as this isn't a formula. As the milk gets thicker, you may need a faster/variable flow teat. For 150ml we would recommend ¾ scoop of the thickener Hope this helps. Laura

Can a feed thickener be used in boiled water and left for overnight feedings? Especially when the water has become room temperature by the time feeding begins

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Edlyn. We recommend the feed thickener is added just before drinking not added ahead of time and stored in the fridge. Heating and cooling changes the thickness/consistency so it is not a good idea to add the thickener ahead of time.

Hi there,

Our 6 week old boy has been on Aptamil Anti-reflux for the last two or so weeks and has been amazing on it. All of a sudden though, the formula as we prepare it (which has been the same for the last two weeks) is suddenly not as thick as it was? This is now causing him pain again - has anyone experienced this?! We've also made it a billion different ways and everytime its just throthy and watery - just not thickening like it did. I realise this isn't specifically for this product so please delete if not necessary.

Could you please advise how much Aptamil Feed Thickener needs to be added to a 80ml formula or when I am breast feeding can I make a paste and how many grams would I add to cooled boiled water. How often in a day should the thickener be added to baby’s feeds?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Cbrooker, for 80mL of milk you can add between 1/4 to 1/2 a scoop of Feed Thickener. Make sure you also change the teat to a 3m or 6m+ teat as the milk does get quite thick. For breastfeeding you can do 1/2 a scoop of thickener and 1 1/2 teaspoons of warm pre-boiled water or expressed BM. This makes a runny paste you can then spoon or medicine syringe into baby's mouth. Give at least 1/2 of this before the feed and then the rest part way through. It is best to use the feed thickener with every feed. Cheers Sue Careline Nutritionist

Hi,
We just started Aptamil feed thickener as recommended by our paediatrician, instruction says 1 scoop in 200 ml, my boys feed is currently 100 ml expressed milk so I added half a scoop, I didn’t shake I swirled to avoid any bubbles, I started feeding him and even after 10 mins I didn’t see the milk level reducing, when I checked even after inverting the bottle or slightly pressing it not even a single drop was coming out, did it get to thick? Not sure, had to throw the feed. We are using pigeon wide neck bottle with 1+ teat.

I faced same issue with Philips Avent bottle so doctor recommended use variable flow teats because after using thickener its hard for baby to feed with normal teat.

Sid B.
Sid B.

Thanks Maryam for the response, I couldn’t find any variable flow teat for pigeon in 1+, does that mean I need to up the size like 3+ or something?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Sid, the Feed Thickener can be used in any amount to suit your baby so a half scoop for 100mls pf milk is fair but you can try using even less. Maybe try about 1/4 sc and see how your baby goes on that and increase this as needed. You will need to use warm water and you will also need to shake the bottle to help it dissolve. If you find your baby struggles to drink this thicker milk, then I would suggest a faster flow teat. The variable flow teats are also suitable but may have a flow that is too fast for a young baby. Feel free to call us on 1800 438 500 if you need more help with this. Kind regards Hilary

Thanks Hilary for the response, not sure if you would know pigeon has fast flow teat for 1+ month or do I need to check somewhere else? This is what we are using currently https://www.babykingdom.com.au/pigeon-softouch-peristaltic-plus-wide-neck-teat-s-2pack.html

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Sid, I would recommend that you contact Pigeon and ask their advice on which of their teats would be best suited for thickened formula. It might be that you need to go up to a size M but they would be the best people to ask. Kind Regards, Amanda - Nutricia Careline.

Hi my baby vomited almost all her feed in her 1st try of the aptamil thickener.I put half scoop in 100 mls of room temp breast milk, it wasn’t dissolve completely when iI gave it to her. do i need to warm the milk and completely dissolve it?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Charmagne, the Feed Thickener does dissolve better in slightly warmer milk so yes, give that a try. You can also make the Feed Thickener up as a paste and feed it to your baby before a breastfeed if that works better for you. Please call us on 1800 438 500 so we can have a chat to explain this process to you. Thanks, Hilary

My baby is 6 weeks old and have cow milk protein allergy and severe reflux as well. We are currently using aptamil pepti junior from last 3 weeks but its not working for reflux. If we mix aptamil feed thickner does it cause any protein allergy? Or is there any other thickner which is suitable for allergic babies?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Maryam, Aptamil Feed Thickener is suitable for babies with a mild to moderate cow's milk protein allergy. Although it may contain traces of milk, it is generally suitable for most babies except for those that are anaphylactic to milk. Please contact Careline at 1800 438 500 or email nutriciacareline@danone.com and one of our dietitians or nutritionists can discuss this further with you.

Why does your feed thickener need to be used within 4 weeks of opening? What happens if I use it after 4weeks?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Davey, The four weeks is about food safety and exposure to possible bacteria, after the can has been opened. If you would like to discuss this further please contact us at the Nutriciacareline 1800438500 Cheers Sue, Careline Nutritionist.

Hi,

My 3 month old is on reflux formula but is getting severely constipated and gassy. She also has silent reflux and I have found that when I was just on the aptamil sensitive she would reflux often but would help her gas and was not constipated. I'm thinking of putting her back on just the Aptamil sensitive and using the thickening feed with it. Will adding the aptamil thickener cause her constipation?

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Kristina, the Feed thickener is a fibre so technically it should not cause constipation unless baby is not drinking enough (enough fluid in diet) due to the thickness of the formula. We recommend a 6m+ teat when using the feed thickener. The Sensitive formula is an easy to digest one so adding the Feed thickener to this might be the best option for your little one. Hi aptamil, the feed thickener isn’t dissolving in my baby’s formula (Alula s-26 lactose intolerance), any advice? Adding it to warm formula. Should I add it to the water before the formula? I am putting 1 scoop per 140ml

Aptamil
Aptamil   DM

Hi Jasmine, the Aptamil Feed thickener should dissolve well in warm water and it should not matter which formula you add it to. Try adding the feed thickener before the formula and see if that helps. If not, please get in touch with Careline (1800 438 500 or nutriciacareline@danone.com) and we can investigate this further for you. Warm regards, Caroline - Careline Nutritionist.
