Car could be so good with a few tweaks
For me this car is a love hate relationship. The rear camera lines are not accurate so I'd use a combo of mirrors and camera. The fuel economy is so far off the manufacturers claim of 6.2L per 100km. Try 9.8L/100. As for acceleration...Don't even think about pulling into that gap unless you put it into manual mode and go past 4000rpm. You'll find yourself turning off the AC at times as it saps what little power and torque there is. I think most of this is due to the 4 speed auto. The 1.4L motor should be a 1.6L like the 2005 Rios. This lets the...whole car down. Besides that its easy to park, interior and exterior look nice, infotainment is good, boot is a good size and rear leg room is good. I love how it looks but not how it performs. The switch gear on steering wheel also feels a bit cheap.

Engine misfire and labouring solved. Free
Appears many comments on these cars missing (misfire, running rough).
Commonly it’s the coil pack, which gets replaced solving the problem. Expensive though.
I just found that a small amount of engine oil can leak from the rocker cover gasket and get on the side of the coil pack, and penetrate the rubber boot. This causes a shorting, arcing of the spark.
Clean off the oil, remove the lower boot from the coil and clean that too. Also clean deep inside the chamber leading to the spark plus, with a rag.
My engine misfire was completely solved
Fantastic little car
We brought our Rio two months ago. So far I am completely impressed by every part of the car. Though yes she occasionally struggles up hills until the gears kick in yet at other times she takes off like a rocket. The car is roomy and super quite and extremely fuel efficient. In two months I've only put 40 dollars in her and yet have driven it regularly. The interior is comfortable and I like that it does not have all the gadgets and Gizmo's because I get to enjoy the drive rather then pressing buttons. Yet it has the right amount. Has a great ...sound system and a fantastic air-conditioning. It can be a little heavy on old or well worn roads. But that does not bother me at all. It is spacious inside and I have never felt cramped in. I feel good when I drive as I always know I'm protected by the 7 year warranty and fixed servicing. She handles great on the road and Motorways. The car is so easy to park. And slip by others when there is limited space to pass.I am very impressed and would recommend them to anyone wanting a reliable and efficient car who don't care for all the glitz and gadgets. Though the car has plenty.
Purchased in March 2020 at Zupps for $18,200.00.
Love this car
Easy to drive, Apple car play is simply the best, so user friendly. Easy to make calls when driving, use the maps, listen to podcasts etc. Only downside is the car doesn't have a lot of go. Great for zipping around metro areas, not that great going up hill or on the road.
Purchased in August 2019 at Kia Dealers for $22,000.00.
I love my little car BUT
I have a 2018 Automatic Hatch. Bought brand new. Great features, great on the fuel but my only disappointment would be the engine noise. A couple months in, noticed a loud ticking noise at idle and also speeds between 15 - 40 driving slowly eg 50km road with roundabout. there was a loud rattling noise, people travelling with me asked about it so it wasn't my imagination. Sometimes very loud. I took it to Kia who couldn't diagnostically find anything wrong with it but their research showed other buyers had had the same problem and they sug...gested using 95 or higher fuel. So yes the high fuel worked but annoyed that I should have to get the higher fuel. It's a brand new car and shouldn't make such obvious engine noises. So.... disappointed on this point. Also sometimes, after accelerating a little then taking foot off a bit it does surge.
Purchased in April 2018 for $17,000.00.
great first car
could not of asked for a better first car. she stuck by me through thick and thin, I definitely did not treat her right, typical female andeverything. not sure how I managed not to blow the engine up. came close, twice. just wish I had been as kind to her as she with me, as I could not afford the inevitable surgery she needed from lack of service and cheap dodgey repair work
Purchased in June 2011 for $9,000.00.
Great Little Car runs on the smell of an oily rag
Brought this car when it was around 5 years old and since then, just spent the usual on a car.
Timing Belt at correct intervals, but looked new when removed.
Front Bearing(a bugger to replace though. if your mechanically minded like me, take them off yourself and get the bearing replaced at garage otherwise mechanics want a fortune to do the job as usual)
Fuel economy is unreal, 40 litre tank and 700klms, not sure it that's possible, but drove here in Victoria(Australia) from Port Fairy to Melbourne and back and fuel light was on at Warrnambool, I guessed there was at-least 5-10 litres left, drove 596....Very low to the ground, so when you go to sit in the car, you just drop to the ground,, get a good cushion if your average height like me. Can tow a small trailer, weighing total weight of around 900kgs OK. Its a front wheel drive and no good on slippery hills in the country, real steep ones, on grass. Doesn't like steep hills, travel up in 4th gear.
Purchased in February 2009 for $2,300.00.
My Kia Rio is a great little car that is light on fuel and drives very smoothly. It has been used every single day for the past 5 years and is still going well. The battery that that the car came with lasted for years and only had to be replaced recently. I did have a couple issues with the car as the air con and electronics I.e. the buttons did not work. This took 3 years to sort out. The mechanic that we had to go through to retain our warranty was horrific and Kia was very unhelpful to resolve the situation. Numerous mechanic visits and figh...ts to avoid being charged for the same problems that my new car came with, my car is finally working as it should. I will definitely purchase a Kia again however Kia needs to work on their customer service skills and ensure their mechanics are actually doing what needs to be done.
so far so good
I bought my Kia about 1.5 years ago. I am generally happy but don't drive so much (only 4000 kms) so far so it is more a little runner around in Sydney. One of the things I noticed is that after 2 minor accidents (me not at fault) one damage to the back and one to the side the car looked pretty badly damaged so I am wondering what it would be to be involved in a 'major' accident and whether I survived. It is just like everything, the parts are from very cheap material. I can see that with my tires, they constantly need to be pumped up (low on a...ir) which seems unreasonable only after such a short time. That makes me think that they used really cheap material. I wish I could have them replaced with better quality tires. Time will tell in the longer run how I am going....
Great fuel sufficiently, nice to drive.
Purchased this to replace i20 which Was written off in hit and run. Great to drive, park and teach my teenagers to drive in. Use it to go to work every day and for any travel requiring 5 or less passengers. Only have to fill up once and week even with all that travel. Service every 6 months or when necessary. No problems at all with this vehicle.
Super easy to drive.
I bought a manual SLi 2013 model brand new and have found it very easy to drive, a full tank of fuel is around $45, handles well and is generally a very reliable car.
I have noticed my gas in the boot hydraulics wore out very quickly and tires on my model are quite expensive to buy (low profile) but other than that, very good little car.
Great little car
Very happy with the car. We bought this as a first car for our daughter, read a few reviews about it and went ahead and bought it second hand with 145000 kms on it. Very smooth to drive, but was a little noisey. We discovered the seals around the rear windows was perished, we replaced them which made a huge difference. Nice and smooth in the gear box, fuel economy is great.
Good car for a first time driver
The new generation Kia Rio handles well, the drive is smooth and comfortable. Outside noise levels are greatly reduced. Only major issue is the effort it requires to drive up steep inclines - it really struggles and you find it hard to go faster than 45 km/hr. The internal technology is great, especially the rear view camera - great view and range. The phone connectable app for apple or android phones is very handy - no need for a GPS, just use google maps. Touch screen works quite well. Good legroom in the front for a small car. A little t...ight for 4 people but it can cope if required. One bug that needs to be ironed out is the change in levels of volume of the radio. When you get in and turn the car on the volume increases and then reverts back to the volume level you have set. this is extremely annoying. To date I have had no other issues, good reliability, but it is early days. Good 7 year warranty and fixed service every 15,000 kms and reasonably fuel efficient, even in inner city driving.
Overall Good performance.
Good value for money with a low maintenance cost.
Reliable car, I never had an issue with it (done 160,000 so far) , just doing the regular maintenance as per log book.
Fuel efficient and economic.
Good interior design, but it has a lot of cheap plastic in the dash board.
Great size car, plentiful boot room. Amble room for usbs to connect phones, gps' and other necessary items. The only thing that is a small issue is when you have a car seat fitted you can't remove the boot liner to either access the spare tyre or clean the liner. The car also has ISO-fix (easier way to fit car seats if they are isofix capable). $40 fills the fuel tank!
Getting expensive to maintain.
I bought mine new in 2012 and have been generally happy with it. However at the four year mark and only 26,000km the front discs and pads were shot and needed replacing. Rear pads were also shot. Not happy but the dealer did offer a free service next time which they honoured. It's in for service today and the front tyres are in need of replacement at 32,000km. The car is used 99% of the time going to the shops etc and the average speed around here is 50 or 60 so very little high speed driving. The tyres are not Kias'fault but the rubbish brake material is. Disappointing in what has been a great little car in other respects.
Better than I thought
It is not my car but I got it from my friend so I drove this car for couple of month. It does not look big the internal space is much more big than I was expection. The doors seal very well, noise can be largely reduce. When driving, it is stable and easy to park.
This is a great car. I travel to Melbourne once a month to see my elderly Mother from Adelaide, a eight hour trip and this small car eats up the miles easily with plenty of comfort. I used to drive a Commodore there and when I traded down to my city smaller vehicle thought how will I manage the above but with the hatch laying down flat and loaded up I have been remarkably surprised at economy, comfort and ease at which this car has performed. And magnificent around the city.
Second hand Rio
we name our car as Cherry from the color. This does not have the enough storage space but it is much for two people the normal daily time. It is the automatic car and the power of the car is limited. The car has been served once from we bought it. Others are looks good.
Great budget new car
I love my little Rio, I would give it 5 stars on the looks alone. Has excellent power and high end speed for a little 4 cylinder the interior looks great and the added Bluetooth iPod connection are great. The downsides are as soon as you turn the a/c or headlights on it seems to suck up all the power from the performance of the car and it also chews through petrol when these are on otherwise it's normally very economical. luckily where I live it's cold most of the year and I do not drive much at night. Also has some bad blind spots and the dash is rather long so vision can sometimes be an issue but all in all great little new car for the price
Questions & Answers
Hi my daughter purchased a new Kia Rio in October 2020 and the engine is Pinging and they can't seem to fix it. She is using the correct 91 fuel and not E10. We've been told by customer service that there are other RIO's doing it as well and they cant explain why, it just seems to be a fault. They just said to use 95 until they find a fix but this is against the manufacturers recommendations. Were worried about the long term engine damage that is being caused. Anyone else got the same problem?
Pinging is most likely due to crappy fuel. Try using 91 instead of E10. The other option is that there is a sensor that is giving bad fuel/air ratios back to the computer "or" the computer has an issue.
She has always used 91 and never used the crapy E10. They have tried 4 times now to fix it doing engine tests and fuel samples and don't seem to be able to. The customer service department let slip that there a number of other Rio's in the same model doing it as well and they cant explain why? They suggested we run it on 95 or 98 which is against the manufacturers recommendations until they geta fix?
I'm getting like 10.5L per 100km which is not great. My Ford Escape uses 10L per 100km and it has twice the horsepower (turbo) and is 500kg heavier....if you only have had it for a short time you could try another dealer and then go to the ACCC.
I have a problem when braking the car creaks it only happens after the car warms up. Coukd it be worn rotors?
Has anyone had dash vibration noise, I have two Kia Rios 2016 & 2019 models both have dash vibrations.
