Washing Machines Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of washing machine would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.
Didn't live up to initial expectations, reviews and price
Purchased LG 10kg front loader washing machine in 2014 with extended warranty. In mid 2019 had to have the Display PCB assembly replaced and now at the end of 2019 and out of warranty it has become faulty once more. All up with the extended warranty it was a $1600 machine, so very disappointing that after the five years we are looking at replacing the machine. I remember the reviews were good when we purchased it in 2014 but time and numerous reviews have proven the machine to be less than reliable, very expensive and a blight on LG's reputation. Sorry I spent so much on the machine with extended warranty and I will definitely not be purchasing another LG.
Purchased in November 2014.
Poor design by LG
Poor design has large gap at front seal allowing pens to get stuck in the drum. This has happened twice in the 3 years we have had it. LG will not cover under warranty any foreign objects. Very costly repairs due to poor design. Previous owned a LG front loader lasted 14 or 15 years without missing a beat.
High price, short life
Bought in 2014. Drum spring gone after 5 years. Price quoted to repair it was $500, that's on the top of $130 call out fee we paid for the technician to tell us that it's too expensive to fix and better to buy a new one. LG you don't fail to disappoint. Never again.
short life - cannot perform well under it's rated capacity
Machine has high price and short life with unfortunate design flaws. We bought this machine 3.5 years ago and it has now broken down. Its had a few difficulties - during its warranty period it developed a leak which LG fixed due to a spring which had torn the rear gasket- but the most recent issue is that the motor became noisy and seized with the LE code. The LG recommended repairer came to look at it and diagnosed it within 2 minutes as it is the third one he has seen this week. Apparently the rear seal to the bearings has worn, letting in w...ater which has stripped the lubrication to the bearings. This has put strain on the motor and worn it out. Despite the motor being covered by a 10 year parts warranty, the repair bill is $800 with motor being supplied by LG free of charge. The thing is, I asked what would cause the seal to wear given the machine is only 3.5 years old... and the answer is that if the machine is overloaded that this pulls the drum downwards which causes the wear. We do not run large loads in this machine and have only used half the 10kg rated capacity based on the machines own readings (it checks the load size at the start of each wash - we are small load-frequent load users). So basically the machine's actual capacity is no where near 10kgs.... not terribly happy as definitely not fit for purpose and LG get to advertise a 10 year warranty on the motor probably knowing that the costs associated with labour and other parts means they will never have to cough up. FYI to any other owners, you can test the bearings by trying to spin the tub with your hand. If it does not move perfectly freely... you probably are in the same boat. Other comments - not easy to clean around the door gasket, and writing on the dials comes off easily (ours has rubbed off in spots).

Pump died after 4 years
Bought this washing machine 4 years ago, have used it 1-2 times a week. It came with a 2 year warranty. I cleaned it regularly as per the maintenance instructions. A week ago it stopped draining water. LG couldnt help and got me to ring their authorised dealer (didn't offer to put me through or arrange it on my behalf). The dealer quoted me a callout fee of $165, plus parts! Instead, I got a local technician (which still cost me $110) and was told the pump had gone. Even he was shocked that it went so quickly. $300 later, the machine is now wor...king again. This 'top of the range' machine cost me over $2000 and I'm disgusted that the pump broke after only 4 years of what I would call fairly light or average use. I'm even more disgusted at the cost of the LG callout fee, and lack of customer service. The technician said that LG put electrics next to the pump which means the risk of water entering the circuitry is high during any repairs, which obviously increases the risk of damage to the machine (and cost to the owner). I was lucky in that respect and my technician knew what he was doing. Aside from that, the machine is terrible. Despite using OMO, clothes frequently had to be re-washed. The manual states that the machine has to be regularly cleaned which includes checking the filter and the drain tube, however the drain tube is impossible to fully check because it is mounted inside a plate on the back of the machine. It also has a child safety lock but that doesn't prevent the machine from being turned off completely part way through the cycle. I will never buy another LG product and I certainly don't recommend them. My previous machine was a $400 Simpson and it ran rings around this hunk of junk. The only reason I had to get rid of it was because I moved into a house that only had space for a front loader. I should have bought a different house.
LG have the worst customer service
My washing machine has just died just after 4 years of use. I rang LG and their customer service is terrible. They want me to pay for a service call when the motor is still under warranty! Yes, the motor has a 10 year warranty but they still want me to pay! They make you wait days for approval and I am still waiting for someone to come out to look at my machine. I do not recommend buying any LG products because if there’s a problem they won’t fix it!
No more LG
This is hour second LG washing machine. The first one lasted 2.5 years. The second one the same. We have children and the machine works quite well and is quiet. Has a timer and different options for the clothes to be washed. My wife was happy in the way they wash however there is a fundamental flaw with the reliability. It is not acceptable washing machines to last for 2 years. Both machines just stopped spinning. The technician who came to assess said that it takes a long time just to remove the back panel and wouldn't try to repair it becau...se there was no guarantees for how long will work. He said that in the last week has seen the same issues in the same model already 4 times. We called LG and they were happy to sent out another technician. He was able to repair the machine and suggested to speak to LG again about the warranty. Fortunately for us, LG was happy to wave the charges. This is a nice gesture to loyal customers but doesn't really address the problem with reliability of their washers.
A Good large capacity front loader
After previously owning an LG 7.5 Kg front loader that lasted 15 Years without one Service call in that time and washed up to 4 adults and 4 Children/Adults over the 15 years until it broke down for the first time , so instead of paying for a repair we scrapped it and bought a New LG 10KG washer back in 2015 I think it was Great for around 2years then stopped working . We contacted LG service and explained the situation Just out of extended warranty by 1 Month they repaired the machine it was just an electronic chip that failed in the control panel LG were so good they honored the expired warranty with no charge at all , thank you LG

In general this big washig machine does the job
We have a big family so we need to reduce the washig machine every week
We ised it to wash bigquilt, blanket and all sort of big wash
We webt from 6.5kg samsung frontloader to this washing machine
The washing is clean, have many option to choose from dark wash, to mix to clean . All working well
I found only one problem
Is the cleAn tub. It always stop in mid way due to unblance. Come on- i used clean tub before on the aame surface and all balance
In general it does the job with a 5 years warranty. Need a bit of work with their tb clean
Worst purchase I've ever made
Not even 2 years old and my 10kg LG washing machine had already broken down, I was told to throw it as it wasn't even worth the cost to repair. At 12 months it started walking across the floor, now the shaft and bearings had completely worn down... Pretty disappointing for a single person who only did a couple of average loads a week...

Love it- solid and reliable
Never had an issue with this machine, zero complaints. Great wash, more options than I could possibly use.
Runs quiet, and spins like a dream.
So happy I did my research and purchase machine with equally good reviews.
Will look for a LG again, next time I purchase a machine.

Problems from the beginning
First the good. This machine is big, I like that. It also tells you how large your load is in regards to capacity... I know if I need to take stuff out. I also like the jingle when it's done. The hot water comes from the pipes, the machine isn't trying to heat cold water, one of the things that I was drawn to about it.
The cons, and there are a few. The fill cycle is loud and clunky. The child lock locks all functions, EXCEPT the almighty power button. Nothing like being halfway through a three hour long wash when a curious todd...ler pushes that bright shiny power button. So stupid. And then the worst part. This machine was purchased in Nov 2015. In about March 2016 I started to notice these greyish splotches on my white clothes. They would not come out once there, the items are ruined. After an incredibly frustrating 8years with a fisher and paykel aquasmart which destroyed my whites by leaving brown sludge marks, I was so disheartened. Not again. This time I researched and found it's a common problem with LG front loaders, and cannot be fixed. It appears to be oil leaking from bearing somewhere in the machine, but LG refuse to acknowledge it. Anyway I read up on keeping the machine as clean as possible and have mostly kept it to a minimum with empty hot water washes using dishwashing powder, and no liquid laundry detergent or softeners (recommended in general to extend the life of a front loader apparently). Last week, 18 months after purchase the motor copped it. The repair guy showed up, turned it on and left within 5 mins of listening to it. very obviously needed a full motor replacement. How ridiculous is that?! Yes it's under warranty but seriously, 18months!?! He also suggested that when he returns to replace the motor he'll check out the source of the oil leak. If it's not fixed, I will be going back to the good guys to request a refund and getting a new machine. Not an LG, nor a Fischer and Paykel.

You only get what you pay for.
My previous 10kg LG front loading washing machine worked perfectly and tirelessly for 11 years before it suddenly malfunctioned. Rather than repair an old machine I decided to purchase another 10kg LG. The first thing I noticed with my new LG WD14071SD6 was how physically small it was. It seemed to be half the size - therefore cheaper to make. My main complaint is the door will not open fully so it is difficult to put laundry in and out. I looked at the old LG door which opened fully but it could not be fitted to the new machine. Then I mounted...the machine onto a stand so that I could drop the wet laundry into a basket underneath. But one night the machine got out of balance and the noise and vibration was so bad that it caused me to remove the wooden stand. A concrete plinth would solve that problem. The other concern was that my wife's lacey blouse was torn beyond repair. The mechanic simply said "just spin at a lower speed". Otherwise the machine has quick wash programs and the high speed spin is very effective in removing water. However I wish I had repaired the old LG. I must admit the new washer does a fantastic job of cleaning. Therefore I have upgraded my rating from 3 to 4 stars
I rate this machine as 99% GOOD.
Am 99% happy with this machine.
The only flaw is one of design that involves two issues:
The first is the default to a warm/hot water wash, and no way to change the default to that preferred by the user.
The second is the failure to put a light behind the temperature indicator and (importantly) the button itself behind the membrane switch (so it can be easily seen amongst the adjoining functions)
We are a two person family so the 10kg capacity is not needed, but does wash better and is more versatile, so I would recommend to any family, t...
10 months - that's all it lasted before costing $300 in repairs
I spent hours reading reviews in order to work out what to replace our beloved Bosch front loader with. Initially I wanted to replace like with like but was told that unless we were prepared to spent around $3,000 we'd be buying a Chinese made Bosch rather than German made due to changes in recent years. So, we settled on an LG 10kg and paid $1,300 (I'd paid $800 for the Bosch and it had lasted 8 years until the drum detached from the motor and that was that - in that time it never faltered once).
We've had the LG machine 10 months and I've ...been happy with it. I will admit I was shocked the first time I started a wash cycle and the eco-wash took 3 hours, but now I've just worked that into my schedule and it's an easy enough adjustment. So what went wrong - well 2 weeks ago I turned the machine on as normal and heard a clunking sound. The best way to describe it was each time the drum turned over it was like an elastic band being wound tighter and tighter. So I quickly turned the machine off. Now the machine comes with this flash diagnostic tool where you download an app and hold your phone up to the machine and press a button and a sound like an old fax machine happens and then the app is meant to tell you what's wrong with the machine - apparently nothing. We tried this a few times and gave up and called LG customer support. We ended up with an overseas call centre giving us a local repairer's number, who when I called said 'we don't normally deal with LG washing machines, just their other products'. Yet they kindly picked the machine up the next day and then.....nothing....for a week. So I called and left messages and eventually am told 'there's a foreign object in the back of the machine'. Further 'LG don't even provide a window in the current model so you can see into the back, in order to get in there you have to remove the whole drum'. Dollar warning signs are flashing in my head - labour costs! So, they remove the drum. A week later, again after repeated calls for updates on my part, I'm told 'yup foreign object *(I've yet to be told what this foreign object is) and it smashed a plastic part which we now have to replace. It'll take a further week for the part to come in. We won't charge you for the part, just labour.' That's your $300. They have dropped off a loan machine in the interim whilst I still sit here waiting to get our $1,300 machine back. What I want to know is this - what good is warranty if repairs aren't covered because we're classed as being at fault because the rubber lip in the machine is so useless it can't catch screws or coins or the like, and the only way to get them back out is to totally dismantle the whole machine. If I could have a do—over, I reckon I’d even be prepared to give the Chinese made Bosch a go over this rigmarole. Think about it – I paid $800 for a machine that lasted 8 years, and yet I’ve just coughed up $300 for repairs to a $1,300 machine 10 months in. That’s nearly a 1/3 of the cost of a new Bosch. Ripped off. And by all accounts, I’m going to have to remain ultra-vigilant with my tradie husband’s habit of leaving screws and other trade bits and bobs in his pocket, as the machine will just ‘throw them in the back’ for a good spin until something once again breaks.
I bought this machine in a hurry - big mistake! Doesn't wash well, spin is sometimes accurate, other times it spins way faster than 400rpm! useless for drip dries, Towels are always hard, clothes rarely clean. And it vibrates very badly so anything on it falls off, and the machine will walk across the floor!
VERY BAD!! Fire hazard! LG worst customer service!
my machine leaked and ruined my laundry! smells like smoke and damages my clothes!
Lg are the worst people to deal with! My machine is clearly a fire hazard!
I am taking this up with fair trading as they are refusing to replace and said they would prefer to fix it! If they find ANY foreign object i wil be CHARGED!!! I have had it for less then 2 years! This machine is very unreliable and unsafe!
NEVER buy Lg again!
Washes our clothes very well. Very happy with all aspects of machine. Last machine was Asko and I did love it but saved $800 by buying this machine. Asko only lasted 7 years anyway. Most annoying is the clunks when machine is filling. Plenty of different cycles to choose from. Overall very good
Value for money
After having a top loader that didn't wash very well I'm so impressed with this machine it washes great clothes come out really clean I love all the easy functions and settings so simple to use and it's not to noisy .This machine is water efficient and doesn't damage the clothes .
My clothes are worn and towels and stiff and dry!!!!
I am so bummed as I bought it with great reviews but it's killed my clothes! My new fluffy towels are now dry, hard and flat!!!!! I've read the manual used every single option with softener but still nothing!!! After washing new clothes a couple of times they look old and faded! I am really disappointed! I even rang the service centre to see what can be done and why this is happening but weren't helpful! :(
