    This is a bit crap

The box says" two hour running time 5 amp hr battery 4 amp hr supplied" so you would expect 80% of two hrs, that turns out to be 96 minutes(1 hr 36 minutes) I am lucky to get 45 minutes of cutting time. Seems like two hours running would be on a bench under no load. Not really honest advertising. This is not as powerful as my old 2 stroke Homelite the cutting circle is smaller and it struggles with Kikuyu grass. The spool has two arrows to indicate direction of winding, they point in opposite directions and are labeled LH and RH, so no confusion there. Yeah mine came with crap line as well.

Purchased in September 2020 for $366.00.

Doesn't do the job, hard to work with

I had the similar issue, only used it 3 times with grief! Went to bunnings to refund or exchange, but they didn't accept refund, not even exchange! They said Makita device doesn't have an exchange policy unless something mechanically wrong with it. But they mentioned Ryobi would have had!!! Now i am stuck with it and probably need to sell it online somewhere!

Purchased in November 2020 at Bunnings Warehouse for $299.00.

    Makita lost the plot.

I bought a brand new unit, $299 at a Bunnings near me. Had great expectations after reading glowing reviews from punters. I was greatly disappointed when I found what probably was a good unit had line that disintegrated under its own weight or at the sight of a fledgling blade of grass. Some clever person at Makita China thought it a good idea to put crap line in the cutting head. If you pay $300 for a unit, u expect to get something better than rubbish. I have returned the unit and got a refund. I needed the unit to do a job, it failed, it got returned. This review may cost Makita sales, someone should have thought of that b4 they put crap line in their units.

Mikita DUR 189. I have problems with the cutting line retreating into the housing after only a few metres of cutting. This happens again and again. I am totally frustrated. The Trouble Shooting section in the manual does not address this problem.
    Can anyone please help.

sounds like poor quality line is breaking at the contact point with the reel, you can tell the sound, feel and spin speed all change. If your using the line that came with the unit, then that's the problem. A good quality line should work better.

Thanks for your answer. This could very well be the cause. I will try a different line next time.

The housing has press tabs, so easy to take off and on again - spool sits loosely inside the housing, so it too pops straight out. Instructions state to prepare approx 3meters of chord, then need to self wind into the spool. It proved an easy straight forward process, although instructions weren't fully thorough and I had to guess what one particular notch was for.

sorry, can't help. I returned it to the store and received a refund as it was sold to me with inferior cutting line.
