Potentially the future of smartwatches
My Powerwatch 2 Lux edition arrived yesterday - hardware is pretty good, watch without straps is surprisingly light for its size but build quality appears pretty good. Packaging and presentation was also very good aside from very, very minor blemishes that wouldn't be there on a Samsung Gear for example. Things like minor scuffs on the silver part of the casing that can easily be wiped away.
The screws to adjust the band/strap were mostly very difficult to unscrew. Of the 4 screws I needed to undo only 1 was easy to remove. 2 were overly stiff...but only made me swear a few times, and the last was so tight I had to spent about 20 minutes grunting and straining to undo the screw. When the screw was finally out, I had to press the pin out of the link extension in order to remove it from the strap. Fortunately I have all the tools required for this, but it should not have taken so long or been so difficult. I feel sorry for anyone else in the same position without the correct tools to fix the issue without ruining their strap. As it is I stabbed my finger with a screw driver when unfastening the last screw. I’m assuming it was assembled with an electric driver with the torque too high, that practise probably needs to stop if it’s the case. Either that or a machining problem causing things to bind up. But that’s just some issues with screws and the rest of the band/strap is of good quality and offers a good amount of adjustment. It’s reasonably comfortable so far but it could be better on the underside of the wrist. I’m considering buying a replacement so if anyone knows of a nice black metal band/strap please tag me I haven’t tried the silicon strap but it looks to be ok, it seems to be nice and soft and shouldn’t be irritating to wear. I put the Powerwatch 2 on the magnetic charger as soon as I opened the box, and it took perhaps 10 mins for the light to change to orange so looks like it shipped with a full charge. I’ve read about other people having issues so wanted to minimise any potential for things screwing up and charged it before playing. The watch arrived with firmware 2.1.7r0. I had no issues with pairing using Bluetooth, and didn’t use the watch much before updating to the latest firmware 2.2.6r0. The firmware update was reasonably quick and worked flawlessly. Updating AGPS happened automatically, the watch syncs with the app just fine and has been totally stable. I can’t yet comment on the battery as the icon still displays ‘full’. Vibration is very noticeable and if anything an option to adjust vibration strength might be an idea, to turn it down if anything. I’m happy with it as is though. There’s a beeper in watch too, would be nice to see some options so we can use it. Options for an hourly beep, starting and finishing workouts, confirmations and selections in watch menus etc would be cool. I tried to get a GPS lock this morning and gave up after 1-2 mins or so of waiting. I felt stupid standing motionless with my wrist pointed skywards and the dog patiently staring at his ridiculous human waiting for a walk. I know it takes longer to get a fix but I couldn't be bothered waiting. I go out during my lunch breaks so I’ll try in a couple of hours to get GPS lock again and see how long it takes.
Connectivity is unreliable - important data gathered is lost
The technology of the Matrix PowerWatch smart watch is amazing in that it does not need charging nor batteries. The watch feeds off skin temperature with new Thermoelectricity technology. This is a new product.
HOWEVER, the watch continually loses connectivity with your smart phone. It is meant to track sleep, distance walked, calories used along with a number of other training functions. These are all good but useless if the watch continually loses connectivity.
I purchased the watch seven (7) months ago and it has already been replaced due to malfunctioning. The replacement was received less than 12 weeks ago and the same issues are emerging.
