I had to invest in a pump when I had my Bub at 26 + 5. I’ve had to pump 8 times a day for the last three months while she was in the NICU. We also live over an hour from the hospital so the fact I can do this in the car while my husband drives is fantastic.
The pump has been great, battery lasts and portability was a must. The only thing I would say is the strength could be better, but that is comparing it to the hospital ones which isn’t really fair.

Great to keep milk supply going
Kept milk flow going while baby was away for a week. I pump instead of direct breastfeeding so use pump up to 6x a day. Great pump to use for all the expression. Also easy to travel with. Comes with handy bag and cooler
Only downside is to clean and dry all the seperate parts after every use which takes a little bit of time to do it good.
Overall definitely worth the money and life safer for us.

Great pump for home use
I have used the Medela Freestyle pump for both of my babies and have had excellent results. It is very simple to use and gentle but still gets ample milk, making expressing a stress free experience. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a pump.

Easy to use pump
I have used the freestyle double pump and found it to be effective. I was glad to have the double to make it more time efficient. It is easy to operate and stores in a nice bag.

Great for a busy on the go mum like me
I tried the spectra s2, symphony and swing in the lead up to purchasing this as my long term pump. I can’t decide if the noise is a pro or con. It’s not super loud but obviously makes some noise. I use it once a day. Preferred the symphony for suction and getting the most milk however the symphony was not portable.
Most importantly for me there was a small part that broke in the tubing - not anything super important just the bit that you put the 2nd tube in when you’re only single pumping. I emailed Medela and they wrote back the next busines...s day replacing it for free - sent to my house. Great service. Pros 1. Super portable, I can use it on the go all the time, in the car etc and it has great battery life 2. As with all medelas the pump head comes apart so you can slip it through a small bra hole (eg spectras it’s one big piece so you need to create a large hole or buy a purpose built pumping bra to use) 3. Strong enough to get 100ml each side 4. Double pump is better than a single 5. Has a bit you can pop the extra pipe in so you can also use it as a single pump
Purchased in February 2019 at Baby Bunting for $379.00.
Gentle and easy to use
Great little pump held its charge really well and was easy to use and gentle. Great for being able to move around and do things when pumping with the use of a pumping bra of course.
Purchased in December 2018.
Good portable pump, pump parts are expensive and hard to find
I am an exclusive pumping (6 months and counting) and have been using Medela Freestyle for approx. 3 months now, before that I was using Medela Symphony (hire pump), I am also using Spectra S2 at the moment.
Compared to Medela Symphony, Medela Freestyle’s suction and comfort is no where as near, and personally, am finding Spectra S2 much more comforting suction wise and power wise. Although Spectra is much cheaper but It also has issues though (pump parts not as durable as other, similar pumps, and lacks portability, needs to be plugged in ...all the time, customer service is pretty average) I purchased Medela Freestyle mainly for portability, for pumping at work/outdoors and it does the job. It is expensive and so are the pump parts, which wear off very quickly with frequent use. There are too many parts to wash and dry. I use the Freestyle as my second pump, use it 2-3 times a day, am finding that Battery runs out very quickly when pumping on high settings, motor unit heats up and feel suction is diminished, not as much when the unit had full power. Outputwise, am getting the expected output, but need to pump for 15-20 mins more (than Spectra) as the letdown always takes more time (despite massaging, heat packs etc).
My daughter was born at 32 Weeks so I was pumping every 3 hours from home and whilst at the hospital. I found that I loved the ease of double electric pumping but I would recommend buying a pumping br as well to maximize your ability to complete other chores whilst pumping.
The suction was good and although I had an oversupply it still pulled out so much milk. Only pump I’ve ever owned so can’t comment against others.
The medal double freestyle is so easy and comfortable to use. When you are exclusively pumping like I was having the convenience of a double pump was absolutely priceless when you have a newborn. It is easy to clean and transport and I will definetly be using this pump again
Pretty good most of the time
I found it quite comfortable to use the freestyle. The double pumping ability saves so much time! The reason we chose this pump over the swing was the ability to recharge the battery and the memory function. I typically use the prodigy for about 15 minutes at a time and can use it for at least 10 sessions before I need to recharge.
Love it, but something stop working in 2 weeks
I purchased these item from baby bunting Hoppers Crossing a few month ago to be used once i delivered my baby. Ive delivered my baby at the end of last month and used the medela from the hospital. When i returned home and use my freestyle, it works okay and I rely on these to feed my newborn. I use the 2 pumps and most of the time just 1 pump. I realize the suction is less when I use just 1 pump. It says that we have to insert the unused short tubing into the tubing holder. And when you turn the device on, theres seems to have some air escaping...from the tubing holder. I wonder whether mine is faulty. After using it for about 2 weeks, something went wrong and the device stop fuctioning via battery. Since im still recovering from czer, and dependent on these to feed my baby, i wouldnt be able to go to the store but my husband will. I hope it wouldnt take much time as the previous reviewer to get these item working or replacement. And yes, i definitely will continue using this pump once its fixed.

its quiet and portable
It is comfortable to use, especially when at work. Suction is good but it does not give a proper sucking to empty out the breasts. Charging is good and the battery lasts a good 10 hours.
it is a relatively convenient machine for portability. However still needs another wall connected milking machine to properly empty the breasts
Simple to use breast pump
Medela was the brand used by the hospital my wife gave birth in, however when purchasing we were told the off the shelve pumps would not be as powerful. My wife can't fault it so far, it's very easy to use, clean and put back together. There is enough suction for two bottles at once, however you have the option to use one at a time if required. There is no noticeable difference using 240v or the battery which allows roughly 8-10 uses of 30 minutes. We have Avent bottles and steriliser kit which the Medela equipment fits in. The only hassle is we mostly use Avent bottles, the Medela kit does not come with teats but can be purchased separately.
Got this pump 4 months ago on sale.
Really simple to use.easy to clean.
After delivery, used hospital grade medala pump.
I didnt find much difference between that one and freestyle pump.
Yes it's a bit pricey but it is worth the money.
There are other accessories in the kit which I didn't find very useful.
I have used the Medela Symphony pump when I was in hospital after giving birth and I really liked it. I told myself that I am going to get something similar when I get home as I didn't like the Philips Avent breast pump which was given to me as a hand me down. I did some research and came across the Medela Freestyle pump which I have purchased and didn't regret it.
PROS: The Freestyle pump is easy to operate and I like the LCD screen with the timing so you know how many minutes you have pumped. It also allows you to adjust the intensity of ...the pumping. Another good feature is that it is a double pump meaning you can reduce the pumping time compared to a single pump, but it also gives you the option of using it as single pump if you want. The pumping action is also very good. It is also portable if not plugged in as it comes with a large battery so you can take it to different rooms and the power lasts. It is also easy to clean. I actually don't find the machine that loud when it operates. CONS: I find after many times of disassembling the connector to clean and putting it back together, it can affect the pumping action but you can pull apart the connector and put it back together again to see if it helps (I sometimes have to do this several times to get the pumping action going). Overall, I do like my Medela Freestyle pump and I would recommend it.
The pump is easy to use and flexible. I only need it for 10 minutes on one breast to pump out 100ml. its such a life saver at 3am in the morning. The only thing I don't like about this pump is that it is a bit loud and sometimes it wakes up the baby during the night. I have to go into a different room for this business.
Reliable, easy to use and dependable.
This machine is easy to use, has a great battery life and has worked perfectly for 7 months straight without a single issue. The dual express modes mimicks my babies sucking to ensure I always get a letdown and I’ve always been able to express at a minimum as much as my baby wants to drink - often I get more than I need, which I freeze.
The only downside is that the pump is quite loud, so nighttime expressing without waking baby can sometimes be difficult.
It’s a great pump, if I ever needed a new pump I’d buy this one again without hesitation.
Can't live without it
After not being able to get my baby to latch properly, this pump has been a lifesaver for me. I love that the pump has a rechargeable battery which means I can easily pump while attending to other tasks. My only criticism is that it's a bit awkward to pick up my baby while pumping due to the design of the pump, but easy to do other tasks.
It is very helpful for a new mum. I don’t have too much breastfeeding milk, but this can really help me when I am not with my baby. I have used it for 5 months since my baby was born. The suction is comfortable for me. And the battery can last a long time.
A bit expensive but worth it
My husband bought this model for me.I can just pack my pump and pump parts in my regular work bag or a small shopping bag. I leave the large black vinyl bag at home.If you plan to do long term breastfeeding, this product would offer you freedom.I love the convenience of this pump
Questions & Answers
My pump auto shut off in like 5 mins for few time already what should I do now
We will probably need a little bit more information. Please call our customer service team on 1800 787 345 and we will be more than happy to assist.
Can this be used as one pump at a time or does both have to be used together?
Yes, I think so. Use plastic wrap between shield and breastshield connector. Then you can transfer Freestyle to a single pump
Hi Chris, yes the Freestyle can easily be converted from a double to a single pump and back again simply by unplugging the tubing from one of the pump connectors and plugging it into the square shaped adaptor in the centre of the tubing. This needs to be done to regulate the vacuum otherwise it will be lost out of the side not being used. Thank you Medela Australia.
Are these fixable / good for a service once out of the warranty period?
Hi Nat, generally we do not fix pumps however should the need arise please contact our customer service team to discuss the options available and we will do the best we can to help you. Thanks Medela Australia
