Good for starter camera in use and price – Like title says, Good camera for price you pay and easy to use. I'm used to nikon D90, but didn't want to carry it in nappy bag as very heavy. I also wear a lot round neck, impossible with D90 and two kids. But I can't possibly just have point and shoot camera, as I would hate the quality of photos and never use a point and shoot and then not… Read more

bother to take any pictures. So nikon 3100 was my answer. Much lighter camera, yes less features but with 2 kids I don't have as much time on the to go to line up and play with the shots as I do when I drag out my D90. Still uses all my D90 accessories, takes very good pics. And at $600 from JB HI-FI I was not going to be devastated if it dropped and never worked as I would over my D90!!

Very happy all said! Ease of use, inexpensive for the quality, battery lasts and lasts. Wish there was a case with it

Hard To Fault – I upgraded to a DSLR from an elderly Minolta SLR. On a pension, $1200 for a kit including the D3100, 18-55mm lens, 55-300mm lens, tripod and gear bag was about what I could afford. I looked at similar level Sony, Canon and Nikon products and would have been potentially happy with any of them. What sold me on the Nikon was that it fitted most… Read more

comfortably to hand. Final choice came down to a matter as simple as that. The D3100 - as with most DSLRs - has facilities I will never use, especially the video function. However, in 18 months' use, I find it hard to fault for the bulk of my photography, faces, buildings and landscapes. I do quite a lot of work where depth of field is important so small apertures, low shutter speeds come into play. For this, the tripod is essential as is the electronic remote shutter release thrown in by the camera dealer. As someone who clambers through bush for shots in some remote areas, I was initially concerned about battery life; it is fine, I have never yet been let down.

Highly recommended. Comfortable to hold and to carry. Great performer, especially at low light levels. The viewfinder, although sharp and clear, is a bit small. ('Live View' helps here.)

Simple to use – This is my first DSLR camera and I purchased mine with the duel lens kit. The camera is easy to use with lots of settings and even has a built in guide to help you pick the right settings for the type of photo you are trying to take. This camera came recommended by the retailer within the price range I was willing to spend at the time and can take… Read more

some really great pictures, although is capable of so much more with a more experienced photographer. Ease of use, quality Still need some level of photography knowledge to get great pics

excellent DSLR camera for beginners – The D3100 is very easy to use entry level DSLR. You just turn it on, put into automatic and start shooting, resulting in great pictures. It also has a “Guide Mode” that will step you through changing the camera settings. Not only will you get the desired results, but you will understand how you achieved them. Guide mode will also show sample… Read more

photos so you will know what to expect from a camera setting. Once you have become used to the controls there and plenty of manual settings to play with and many lenses and other attachments that can be added. I bought my D3100 with a Nikon AF-S 18-105mm VR Lens - it was a little more expensive than a single lens kit but has wide angle and reasonable telephoto all in one. Nikon = quality and usability

Perfect entry level camera – I bought this Camera and it had allot to offer for the price, its easy to use with the guide, very sturdy lens has proved itself after a fall.. It stayed intact and still works great. I get great quality pics and I am not a Pro but I feel like one with the quality I get.. Price was very affordable

Great camera, perfect for first DSLR user – Great first camera, has a built in guide to help out if you get lost... All the scenes and settings make it a little overwhelming at first but its brilliant once you get the hang of it. Takes perfect shots. Came with extra lens for longer distance made it so much more worth its value. Recomended buy. Liked the simpleness and the well captured photos. Doesn't come with a case so had to be very careful with it at first.

Great entry level camera – I really enjoy using the D3100. Great entry level camera, easy to use and learn on. Good quality shots without a terribly expensive price. I dropped it accidentally and it took the fall well - no breaks or damage (luckily). Would recommend to others without hesitation. Can't wait to keep using it more! easy to use, relatively inexpensive, good quality

I really look forward to using it as often as possible – I purchased this item on the advice of the salesperson who said it was the best of the entry level DSLRs.(And also it is a Nikon) Price was also a factor as up until now I did not think I would be able to afford a DSLR. Prior to purchasing this camera I had been using a top-end point and shoot, while this had exellent features and good picture… Read more

quality it could be difficult and slow to use, especially the complex menu functions. By comparison my Nikon D3100 is just so easy to use, and really, there is no substitute for a proper DSLR for any amateur photographer. I will rate picture quality as "quite satisfactory", it is not needle sharp. A little bit of post production sharpening is helpful and apparently this is quite normal for all but the most expensive DSLRs.

My only minor disappointment is the telephoto lense supplied as part of the kit is only 200mm, 300mm would have been just that little bit better. Good value for money. Ease of use. Intuitive menu system and easy to read display. Good feel. Reasonably light weight. Good battery life. Supurb auto-focus. Good instruction book. Good playback monitor.

Great Camera – The Nikon D3100 Digital SLR is a great camera for those wanting to start getting professional with their photography, without the huge price tag. It's auto feature makes life very easy for the novice without compromising picture quality. The speed also makes getting those fleeting moments a snap. User friendly. Picture quality. A bit bulky, but no more than any other SLR Show 2 replies

Good – I love this camera, although I have only owned it for a short time, I love how it feels and looks and it takes great photos. I feel like a professional when using it. I purchased a dslr especially so I could take beautiful shots of my toddler, and this has exceeded all my expectations in a camera. I would reccommend it to any photo enthusiast and… Read more

especially beginners like myself. Looking forward to taking more family photos, two thumbs up. I only recently purchased this camera and am already in love with it. I have wanted a dslr for ages and I am very happy with my choice. I am only a beginner when it comes to dslr cameras but so far I have found it be really easy to use, looks very professional and easy to use (guide mode assists). None so far.

You need to buy this DSLR – We couldn't be happier with our camera purchase. Nikon has provided us with an intuitive, easy to use and incredible quality camera that feels so solid and expensive you could be forgiven for thinking that you have bought a much dearer model by mistake! It feels great to hold and takes flawless photos without even having to change any settings. … Read more

The first lot of photos you take with this camera will make you wonder how you ever lived without a DSLR, the colour depth is far greater than any point and shoot camera I have ever used...

We paid $1100 for the body and 18-55mm plus a 55-200mm lens kit in March 2011. At the time of writing this kit now retails for betwee $900 and $1000. A bargain in my opinion. In april, Nikon released the d5100, a slightly better camera still aimed at the entry market. I believe that it has an upgraded image processor and a better LCD display. If you're in the market you may want to consider this one too.

If you're torn between a Canon 1000d and this Nikon d3100, I would choose the Nikon - not only is the image processor superior to Canon's, it feels much more solid and far less plastic and empty. Price, battery life, lens quality and price, solid expensive feel, quality plastic moldings Auto focus noise when shooting video
