its a homebrew beast – the nintendo 2ds is great aside from its ugly looks it is a great option to play games on the go weather you are a child or an adult the nintendo 2ds has you covered
Can't fault. Great option for younger kids – The 2DS is a safer option for the younger kids who don't need potentially eye damaging 3D. The unit is robust and a good size and plays 3DS and DS titles. The screen and controls are just right and it is portable. Only gripe is that most of the accessories are made for the 3DS and 3DS XL.
Perfect for me! – When my brother traded his broken-hinged 3DSXL (not the "new" version") for a 2DS, immediately he convinced me to buy one too. Why? 1. No hinges to break. 2. Everything is viewed in 2D (3D strains my eyes, even viewing for 10 seconds). 3. New Streetpass features. The moment I got a chance, I traded my 5 year-old 3DSXL for a second-hand 2DS, $50 off a new one. I love it more than my 3DS!
I have one down side, but it has nothing to do with the product, because it is a second-hand one. The volume doesn't work, it only worked once! So as soon as I can, I'll get advice from a technician. If that can't be suitable, I'll just borrow my brother's when I am playing a game that needs volume!
Excellent piece of hardware, couldn't be happier – As a male in his late 20s I wasn't sure if a 2DS is right for an adult. I usually play my XBOX360 2-4 hours a week and enjoy mostly racing (Forza, Dirt, Driver) and sandbox-style (GTA, Just Cause, RDR) games. I always had the desire to revive my childhood memories with the SNES and tried many games on my phone and tablet but the lack of physical buttons and shallow games killed the experience for me.
So finally I decided to get a Nintendo device. I wanted something on the cheaper side and didn't have the space for a Wii U so I was in limbo between the 2DS and 3DS XL. I found the 3D feature gimmicky and price difference was quite big so ended up getting the 2DS. I also purchased a carry bag and screen protector films from Ebay (as the screens are always exposed).
The 2DS is an excellent piece of hardware and does everything I need. It is ergonomic and feel right in the hands while playing. It comes with an SD card for game saves and downloads. The screens look good and the resistive touchscreen works perfectly. The console is built very well and feels sturdy.
Nintendo has some incredible IPs like Mario, Zelda etc and these games are indeed awesome. While I was enjoying "serious" games on X360 I completely forgot how fun Nintendo games are. The bright colours, the music, the gameplay is just really cool. I found myself playing my 2DS all the time and my Xbox 360 is collecting dust since.
Battery life is pretty good, the manual claims 5 hours which seems true. I keep the wifi off and brightness in the middle so the 5 hours is definitely doable.
On the negative side I have to mention it will not fit your pocket. However if you are dragging a backpack with you all the time you can throw it in easily. It has one mono speaker but given it's size it's pretty good. The 2DS has headphones output in case you care for stereo. I can't think of any other negatives.
The 2DS is an awesome portable console. If you don't care about 3D or the big screen or want to save some money go with the 2DS. You will love it. Ergonomic, well-built, backward compatible, fun games Mono speaker, will not fit your pocket
money hungry company – It a Nintendo 2ds for my husband out of birthday money and within less than a week it would not work. (wouldn't recognise games). So we sent it away and then sent a game down only to get a phone call from them saying nothing was wrong with it when clearly there was. As I said to them why would we send something that was working. They were rude, didn't care and said for us, to get the ds back we have to give them $30. All they are is money hungry and I am disappointed with this company. So until we give them the money we won't be getting our ds back.
