Underwriters Call the Shots!
I tried to switch from Woolworths to Pet Insurance Australia after reading the positive reviews. Got hassled five times by their marketing arm after making an initial internet inquiry. I applied and now the underwriters have complicated and stalled this switch.
I just don't have the time or energy to beg for them to take my business and Pet Insurance Australia have done nothing to help resolve the issues for me. I now also don't have much confidence they would be helpful if I needed to make a claim.
I have a healthy three year old dog. I've never made a claim. No reason not to insure him.
So my advice is don't waste your time.

The biggest crooks in the pet insurance
I have had my policy for 10 years and have never been able to claim the 80% back that they claim you do get. Not only did I have to pay for major vet bills and only get maybe 1% payment for every bill that would just cover my monthly pet insurance cost they also reset all medical issues every year. So for example your dog had a skin condition problem that is ongoing, the policy renews every year and you have to pay 95% of the vet bill at the beginning of the policy renewal year each year. k with his pancreas and you pay almost full amount of the bill and let’s say he gets sick again in two months time and you think you finally be able to claim 80% it resets all of this if the policy renewal month is between these periods. My dog was in the most comprehensive cover and I pay $1800 a year I only was able to claim in the past tear $180! Same in the last three years! Beware please do not get this insurance it’s a waist of your good money! I’m so angry that I was taken advantage and now that my poor dog is old and needs medical attention I don’t get any the security that I thought I was paying for!1 comment

They tried to scam me
I have PIA insurance for my French bulldog for while and I got a new pup in few days ago and i checked PIA quote on PIA website and its say $31.20 for Major Medical Cover and its say need to ring PIA to add another pet so I did. Michael on the phone say its will cost $35.20 per month include 2nd pet discount?!

5 months into policy our dog needs surgery wasn’t covered until 6 months and only half the amount covered for surgery
Do not insure with PIA they don’t cover your claims enough don’t have any compassion for your pets only your money stay away go look elsewhere as I’ve done with RSPCA

a waiver for the waiting peroids at the beginning of your sign-up, as explained in the PDS and your insurance information. We do advise all of our clients to read the PDS and their insurance notes in full so they understand what they are covered for at the time of taking out the policy. Rip off!!
Was able to get some money back from a claim but not all of it. Had ridiculous policies like they’d cover surgery but not the blood test you need to have before surgery. Tried to leave, because we made 1 claim for 1 of our dogs(that we only got some money for) we had to continue paying for 6 months to finish the policy, without cover for that dog. Then the other dog who has had no claims should of been able to have no claims refund but then they decided that we couldn’t have that because we had been paying weekly not annually.
Waste of money!! Make a seperate bank account and save yourself. Pet insurance is the biggest Joke ever!!! Read terms and conditions very carefully!

when i sign up the webIt said effective from 8th Maythey refuse to claim for placing the condition on 9th May with waiting periodit's like misleading advertising. I really regret choosing this insurance

Pet Insurance Australia.....(PIA)
It is a farce that you charge excess per condition especially necessary euthanasia. I never knew that after paying you mob THOUSANDS of dollars, YES thousands for 3 dogs that when my best mate had to go to sleep I got hooked for another $200. At a minimum excess should be waved for long term customers when euthanasia is required. I will be "outing" you lot on Social Media because I believe that most of your very loyal customers such as myself dont realise your clever wording is per condition.....HIGHWAY ROBBERY. February will be my last month with you muppets, im taking my hard earned dollar elsewhere

Steer clear
Extremely poor service. Would not recommend to anyone at all ever. Steer clear. I would never sign up to this insurance again. What a complete waste of time and money.

They will try not to pay you.....be warned!
My claim for my cat's treatment - and the appeal, has been rejected on the grounds of her presentation being a "pre-existing" condition - untrue! In fact the reason I took the cat to the vet was for a behaviour change. But they say a mention of lumbar hypersensitivity at an appointment for routine vaccinations a year earlier shows a pre-exisiting condition of spondylosis. t infection!! But they denied the claim on the grounds of pre-existing spondylosis. I guess they couldn't claim a pre-existing chest infection so they had to hang it on something! I will fight this all the way though. I would not recommend. Update: Nov 2019 - After 2 appeals and an internal dispute resolution review - they admitted it was not a pre-existing condition - and I got paid! It should not be this hard!3 comments

Very good... then very very bad
I purchased the top cover from this pet insurance company 6 years ago for my German Shepherd when she was 9 weeks. Initially the price was excellent at around $40/month. In her lifetime she has been to the vet 6 times for yearly heartworm and vaccinations and have made a total of one claim for this (stupid me forgot to submit the other 5 claims, so this is my fault). I received the renewal this year and the price had ballooned to around $100/month. I thought this was a little high, so went online to search and compare pricing. Imagine my surpri...Read more
se when I discovered that the online quote from the same company, for the same dog, was only $55/month. I then rang this company and was told that this was for new customers only. The only way I could receive this price was to let the policy lapse and then start a new one. This company has provided very poor service to their existing and loyal customers. They tried to scare me with the old "no cover for existing ailments" and "you'll have to do all the waiting periods again" line. As my dog has no prior history (except for yearly vaccinations, this had no effect.I am looking for a new insurance provider now before my dogs cover runs out. Very sad to say goodbye, however company's like this need to remember that there are multiple providers now and the same pricing should apply to existing as well as new customers. Check your cover every year, especially if you have a healthy animal, as they will punish you given the chance. *Update* No contact from PIA. I have renewed the policy as a new customer and saved several hundred dollars per year. The insurance is good, but their customer service is very poor. They thought this would just go away, so now it's time to inform everyone of their scandalous customer service. They will definitely try to "rip you off" if you don't compare your policy with their own website quoting tool. I hope the head office views this post instead of the overseas call center and acts to improve the service to existing loyal customers. Terrible customer service. A pain to submit a claim.
I have been with PIA since April 2018. My two year old boxer has only been to the vet for being spayed, vaccinations and flea/tick/worm tablets. I have had to submit a claim for an injury and keep getting repetitive messages to submit vet history when PIA has all the documentations regarding spaying, vaccinations and tablets. The customer service representatives are unhelpful and just re-read what you can already see on the portal. They do not transfer you to anyone in the claims department and I am currently on a very long "hold" to speak with a supervisor. Very disappointed. I do not want to have to keep calling every few days to chase up a claim especially when all the documentation has been provided.

Just a mistake
I was with Pet Insurance for 1 year, but it was such a big nightmare with claims process and indian customer service.. the last drop was when i called them a week ago to say "i want to cancel my policy because my premium just went up to 88$/a month (10$more) and I've got a second dog now to pay for", so they said "our cancellation department is super busy right now, they will call you withing 2 days".... almost a week later, I'm receiving an email saying "your policy has being cancelled "...
No phone call, no trying to "hey we ve got for you different options/plan"...

You'll just end up having to call and call and call!
I took out their major medical after my pup broke his leg. I was completely aware that this would be 'pre-existing' but wanted insurance in case something else ever happens. He was 7 months he he broke it.
I had him desexed during his surgery to fix his arm. The desexing was covered ($50 out of $250 worth). Anyway...6 weeks later and I have not seen any reimbursement and am simply calling and calling but there's always another form or document asked for before it can be processed. I don't care about the $50, it's now just the principle of the matter.
Terrible company...whishing I chose someone else!

had not been provided. I called PIA and was informed that the history papers were not followed up. The service rep I was speaking to said that he would call the vets but by the end of the phone call, it had changed and he asked me to contact the vets for the documents and have it forwarded to PIA email address. I don't mind doing it but saying that papers will be collected and then it is not followed up is disappointing (particularly for $650/year). Also...I lodged this claim at the end of November and it wasn't until I phoned PIA in January to ask about my pup's desexing reimbursement (after checking my account) that I was informed about the missing documents. No one had called earlier to seek the documents which wad a poor oversight and if did not contact PIA, there would have been any follow up. mit amount, however, that is only if you go over this amount. For Comprehensive, the annual policy limit is $15,145 per year. That then renews each policy year. The amount payout will also depend on your chosen excess. You can also use the GapOnly service where you only pay the gap amount (excess etc) at a participating vet. You also only pay one excess per condition. When your policy renews each year, the annual limits are reset (for conditions and policies) meaning it goes back to $0 used of the total cap for the year (for Comprehensive this is $15,145 for the policy limit). The Annual Condition Limit - This limit applies to each Condition you claim. We will not pay more than the Annual Condition Limit shown on your Certificate of Insurance for any one Condition. There is no limit on the number of Conditions you can claim in each Policy Period. The Annual Condition Limit resets on renewal each year.
