Pioneer A-109 Questions & Answers
VerifiedI recently bought a used Proton AM/FM Tuner AT-470 to hook up to my Pioneer A-109, and am wondering why it gives a better quality sound compared to when I use phono, tape deck or computer audio output - the bass is deeper and more defined, the sound is richer, and it's generally punchier and generates more volume. I wish I could get that sound from all my inputs, but suspect that it must just be something the Proton does that improves the quality. Any ideas? By the way, loved the reviews from Tony N and DrKnow! Mark from Adelaide.
Two factors generally explain why different audio inputs result in different volumes from your amp. It's likely that the tuner has a higher voltage output than other sources. Impedance will also effect the resultant output volume but I think voltage is more likely to explain the volume differences you hear.
Thanks for the speedy reply, DrKnow! It's as I expected, then, the Proton is simply doing more than the other audio inputs... she is a beast!! Best wishes to you. Mark.
Can I run two pairs of speakers from my Pioneer A109. Both sets are 8 ohms. If so should they be wired in series or parallel? Thanks Tony
You should be okay running in parallel (I wired some tweeters into the terminal of a larger speaker as an experiment) but I would not be pushing volume much beyond half way.
This amp can handle 4 ohm loads no problem. So, wire it in parallel or use an A + B selector. Because it will run into a 4 ohm load, check whether the amp is running hot if used for long periods. 4 ohm loads will draw double the current of 8 ohm loads from your amp so wise to be mindful of clipping the amp by overdriving the speakers. Audible distortion will be apparent if that occurs.
