Will Be Looking Elsewhere For My Next Dog
I covered my pet from a puppy so no restrictions were in place except for hip displacement for 6 months. She had to be euthanised at 6 years due to chronic liver failure. I provided the invoice from the night at the pet hospital which listed the procedures that were performed to diagnose and ultimately euthanise. Upon submitting the claim to Real Insurance, I was told that I had to provide a complete document of all of the diagnosis’s performed by the hospital that night and I organised for the hospital to email real, the hospital also emailed ...me to confirm that they had. I phoned real the next day and they confirmed receipt of said email. I asked at this time why they needed this info as the dog was covered for whatever reason that she may be sick or die from and they said that it was standard procedure but it doesn’t make any sense and I don’t understand why I was told that my dog was covered for any reason when I then had to provide an entire diagnosis. 2 weeks later, by snail mail, I received a further request for a complete history of my dogs health records from my vet! Once again it was provided. I called real a few days later to confirm that they now had everything required to process the claim and they said that they didn’t have any documents from the hospital! It was at this point I completely lost it and told them that as I had already received confirmation of receipt that it was now their job to request required paperwork and I also accused them of playing games to delay my payment (which was in excess of $6k). Finally, they did step up, told me my claim would be given priority, contacted the hospital for the documents to be resent and then paid me within 7-10 days. Yes, I finally got my payout but I feel like I had to fight to get it for absolutely no reason, my dog died - she was covered to die for whatever reason and I had to jump through hoops to get my payment, obviously at a time that I was still grieving her loss. No, I would not use real again, I am going to go with rspca next time, at least they pass some of the money on!
Insurance policy is fantastic
Policy is great value however the time for the processing of claim is convenient and stress free however there should be a fixed price as I am on a fixed budget
Long & drawn out
It took 2 & 1/2 months to resolve my claim & had to contact real insurance via phone - on an awful patchy line - multiple times. I had to do all the chasing up. Will be switching to a different company when this policy runs out.
**RPI is great for value and simple to get started, we were with Pet Insurance Australia but changed as their prices went up alot higher.
Our girl is 17mnths and has had 3vet visits not including vaccinations etc. Our first claim with RPI was last month and is taking so long to process. They do not make it easy and have palmed the claim off as pre-existing and routine care which it most definitely is Not. Not only has it stumped myself but also our vet who has had to email them consultation notes 3x now to have the claim reviewed. Think twice b...
Online claiming not very user friendly
My 1st online claim took over 30 minutes to set up & enter/upload required details. A lot more could be changed to make it more user friendly. Including allowing for policy number variances. Since there seems to be a few different ways I’ve seen it used in their correspondence. Uploading documents seemed quite unclear & clunky to use. Frustrating, I hope some improvements can be made to stop others going through the same frustration.
Should of stayed where I was
Our previous pet insurance company was 100% better to deal with, we only transferred to real as we set our life insurances up with them, think I’m heading back to old company, claim took too long and alot of emails back and forth, makes us wonder if we look around for another insurer for life etc
At this stage after spending $2000. On Vet. bills, little help having our dog insured.
Policy of little value. Easy to set up of course.
Been with company a couple of years.
Recent claim would have been easy for you to resolve. 0,0,0,0,0,0,0, easy to arrive at.
Sorry, but insurance company’s are a pain in the clacker. A bit like using an ash tray on a motorbike.
Pet Insurance - New Policy
I am not sure how long I have had pet insurance, perhaps over ten years. I currently have my Cocker Spaniel, Lucy insured with Real Pet Insurance. Having acquired Georgie in May 2018, I wanted a policy to cover her also. During the process of establishing the policy I was asked if Georgie had any pre-existing medical conditions. I mentioned that she had recently had an ear infection which had been effectively treated; following which I was told this new policy would not provide cover for ear infections. If it was a serious ongoing medical condition I could understand it, but ear infections?

I wouldn't recommend getting locked in
I've been with real insurance for 4 years. We started at $70 per month and each year the insurance goes up considerably. We have entered our 4th year at $98 a month. I rang to opt out but discovered that although I pay monthly it is a rollover insurance that is contracted for a year. This was not clear at all. And is the only insurance I've ever been with where you pay monthly but can't opt out. Very deceiving. In addition I was told the premium went up because I was ageing. I'm 29! Not only that but I feel the claiming is a pain. Having to pri...nt out out and email or post the claims form. No online quick claiming. I am yet to make a big claim as we have only had 12 monthly health check ups at the vet for our 4yo dog - real refunded the 85% returned into our account quite efficiently. I am worried however at the premiums keep going up at this rate. It doesnt seem worth having the insurance on the first place. As a customer it feels real pet insurance is a cash cow that's designed to make as much money off you as possible.
They refuse to pay out a claim made for Lupus on my dog
When I first had my dog and insured him with this company, he had a tummy rash due to the grass in our garden. He was given tablets and I was told to give him Telfast, which I still do today. That was in 2012. This year he was diagnosed with Lupus on his nose which has gone all crusty and swollen and has had to have various vet visits and all kinds of medication. When I submitted the claims, everyone has been rejected because they are saying its a recurring skin condition from when he was first insured and therefore not covered. My Vet has ...even written to them advising Lupus is an autoimmune disease and not allergy related. Still REAL are saying "its part of the skin" so won't pay. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY if you care for your dog. December 11th 2019 Update: Do not waste your money with Real Pet Insurance They refused to pay claims for my dog who was diagnosed with Lupus which is an autoimmune disease. The reason they gave was because he had a rash during the initial 30 day exclusion period when we first took out the policy which was 5 years before the lupus diagnoses. The vet wrote to them explaining he has an autoimmune disease which is completely different to the grass rash he had 5 years prior. They still refused.
Extremely hard to claim
The policy was extremely easy to set up. I started my pet unsure two days after getting our 12 week old puppy I thought I was doing the right thing and when taking my puppy to the vet for her 2nd vaccination I had the bet write up a full health record. The second visit to the vet was her third vaccine and desexing. When we went to claim for an Emergency at a different clinic, I had to get another full veterinary history! My vet wouldn't do any more for us because it had nothing to do with them and we were left paying out insurance that we could claim on.
I just had my claim refused by real pet insurance when my staffy got an insect bite that turned into a cyst inside his ear they declined the claim because he had mites years ago and an insect bite is classed as a skin disorder so a pre existing condition!!! I then asked if he got bitten by a paralysis tick or a cut or wound on the skin would I be covered I currently have the highest cover policy and they said no as it is all skin related like why am I even insured then have cancelled this policy they are money hungry frauds!!
Nothing at all
I have been with Real for one year and have had both of my dogs insured with them.
Every time I make a claim with them there are numerous forms to be completed, and plenty of rules to slow the payment process.
Claims must be submitted within 2 weeks.
Claims must be accompanies with a full history from all vets every time there is a claim; etc
I am just about to switch as I am tired of having to fight every time I make a claim. The process should be simple.
easy to sign up
too many limitations and rules
