Decent product at a reasonable price.
I bought this unit from Bunnings after reading some less than glowing reviews for some other branded units. It uses the Ryobi One 18V battery system, which is either a benefit or a problem, depending on how you look at it. A tool such as a polisher/buffer does not really have to be cordless, but if you happen to have other Ryobi 18V cordless tools (as I do) it's not such a problem. Be aware though: if you do not have any other Ryobi cordless products, this unit is sold as "skin only": which means you have to buy a battery and charger (and this ...means over $150 extra!!). The polishing area is not as big as some others on the market, but this means that you can use it one-handed if you wish: naturally two handed is better. It is a random orbital buffer/polisher, so it is dual action to help minimise swirl marks. It comes with two pads: one for polishing and one for buffing. So how does it go? The pads are not super easy to put on; they have an elastic band around the perimeter, and it is tight, so you have to do a bit of stretching to get it on evenly (mind you, after a bit of practice it becomes easier). As previously mentioned, it is small enough to use one handed, though after a lot of use your hand WILL tire, so be aware of this. One major complaint is that the 'on-off' switch is on the front of the unit: you cannot turn it on while holding it single handed- you have to turn it on with your other hand. Having said that, once it is on it seems to work quite well. Unlike another reviewer, I had no problems applying a fair bit bit of pressure on the work piece without it stalling. It seems to work quite well and give a satisfactory result for both polishing and buffing, and battery life (admittedly with the 5.0Ah battery) is pretty good. If you have a big car to polish, having a second battery would probably be a wise investment nonetheless, but for an average job, it is a very good solution. Verdict: Compact and easy to use; while the batteries are an extra cost, it is a capable and decent unit for the price: Recommended
After reading glowing reviews I purchased the polisher purely for buffing up my the fibreglass on my boat.
I found this unit to be absolutely useless, the slightest pressure on the pads and unit stops rotating, just basically vibrates with no result.
Great idea Ryobi but does not perform, is not powerful enough.
Spoke to Ryobi via Bunnings and was told this unit not suitable for fibreglass only "spot" polishing??.
Awesome little polisher
Great for a quick cut n polish at home, didn't think it would cope being so small but it powers through my statesman without changing batteries. For the price it is a great little buffer and not hard on the arms to use either. Perfect for any level of car enthusiast
Questions & Answers
1 Is there a tendency to remove too much paint from curves and edges.
2 Is it used to apply compound/polish as well as buffing
3 What approx area is completed before pad change is required.
4 How many pads supplied.
5 Are extra pads available, at what cost.
6 How long does a fully charged battery last in polish mode
1; No, it's not fast enough to burn paint like a 12" grinder type polisher, it's more a gentle wax/polish tool i.e. Ideal for regular wax application.
2&4; it comes with a terry towelling type applicator and a lambs wool pad - as above, if wanting to cut/remove scratches I'd buy a 12" grinder type polisher.
3; I do the entire vehicle in the terry towelling pad, then the entire vehicle in the lambs wool cloth.
5; I purchased two replacement pads at Bunnings for $16 recently (one of each pads)
6; two 1.5 ah batteries seem to work for me, but I'd reckon one 5 ah battery would do the job.
****Please note***** I do not work for Ryobi, nor am I a panel beater, I'm merely a guy that likes to keep his vehicles nice and clean and this is PURELY personal opinion!
