Can help boost milk supply
Comfortable breast shields
Device is rather bulky
Portable and easy to use!
Got Spectra S1 breast pump second hand and It worked beautifully for my first baby. Portability was the key because I needed to pump at work and sometimes on the go in the car. The machine is bulky but I didn’t mind as it worked well, though I did find the suction was more powerful when I used it only as a single pump rather than a double pump. Different settings of speed and suction as well as a “let down” mode was super handy as well. Really great product!
Love this pump. Easy to clean, effective i.e can pump $150 ml in 15-18 mins. My breast no longer hurt and am happy to pump three times per day. Previous pumps were taking over sn hour to get the same amount of milk and my breasts hurt and had more moving parts to clean. This machine is also super quiet. Worth the price tag. Only complaint is not being able to choose flang size upon purchase of unit, they all come with a standard 24mm flange and I need 32mm. So when I bought the pump online I also ordered a 32mm set-set means one flange, so need to order another one at $29.
Purchased in June 2019.
A great pump
Pros: Easy to use, looks nice, a lot of different functions, portable.
Cons: Expensive, quite weighty.
I bought this pump before bub arrived after reading everyones reviews online. It is seriously a wonderful pump, double pump is great, however I haven't used it too often as have exclusively BF with no bottles... for some reason I can't let-down milk without the baby feeding. I wish I had waited to buy a pump for this exact reason, however if you are 100% certain you will be expressing, then this is definitely a great pump and I will keep it for the next pregnancy in case I need a pump. I have recommended to others.
Purchased in April 2018.
Great pump. Probably the best on the market but not without flaws.
Great pump and I can reach letdown much faster than with my Medela Swing. I’m not sure if it actually extracts more but being able to pump in 10 mins as opposed to 45 mins is a major plus!
A couple of cons I’ll note:
-The size - not too portable but expected for a hospital grade pump. I used to like using my Medela Swing with a pump bra and hook it to my pants so I could do my house work while pumping. The spectra is way too big for that.
-Would prefer more power on double pump - I’ve found the power goes down on double pump so even on hi...
Purchased in December 2018 at Spectra Baby for $280.00.
Works really well! Battery last long & easy to clean!
This is the only breast pump that I have used so far. It works well, parts are not overly complicated, therefore easy to clean. The flange that it comes with is a standard 24cm, it didn't fit me, hence I have to purchase a 20cm flange separately. It would be great if there is an option to choose which flange when you purchase the machine.
Machine is a bit heavy though which makes this not easy to travel with. If you are using it predominantly at home, this is a good machine. If you are thinking of getting back to work or use it while travelling, better explore a more portable machine.
Great product but can be better
Received this pump several weeks ago to support my breastfeeding journey after multiple fail attempts of using Medela Swing Maxi (low suction, can't massage lumps), I found the pump very uncomfortable at the beginning of use. I spoke to Spectra customer services (Bron - she is fantastic) and we were communicating with each other back and forth until I found the right settings to suit my body. It is a bit trial and error but overall this is an excellent pump. I am able to get more milk in half amount of time compared to Medela. Price point is ve...ry reasonable for a hospital graded pump. Super quiet so I can express at work or the night at minimal interruptions. However there are several things to consider. I prefer much the way Medela is assembled with the connector and the breastshield separated. This allows me to store much better and allows that extra space in my work bag as I have to squeeze in everything. Couldn't find many containers that would fit both flange kits at the same time. The pump itself is light nonetheless bulky. And the worst is the bottles. You've gotta be careful using their bottles as they don't stay put, easily got tipped over and leaked. I have several incidents when it happened and just lost the milk. Balancing all pros and cons, if asked, I would definitely choose this pump again over Medela for the functionality, affordability, and customer services. Cheers, Lani.
Affordable hospital grade breast bump
Very pleased with my purchase! I used another brand which took me 40 mins each time to express at work. With all the positive reviews I purchased the S1 and I wish I could had it sooner! It is such a powerful yet quiet breast bump. I managed to get more milk in 20 mins. I like the let down mode as it imitates the way baby latches on. Overall I'm very happy with the S1 and I would recommend to any new mom who's returning to work. The only cons is that my nipples can be easily pulled into the neck of the flanges, maybe I could choose a wider flange.
Spectra sell these pumps directly, from their website. As such, there is no dealer network. They manufacture the product and supply it.
The pump works really well. For the price, I think it is hard to beat. The ordering process is a bit flakey though. Firstly, the web page froze as my order was being processed, leaving me unsure whether the purchase had gone through correctly. Secondly, I was told that if I placed an order in the morning my pump would be shipped the same day. This turned out not to be the case, my pump took two days to arriv...e. This meant I had to hire a pump to cover the day we were without one (and there are minimum hire periods of course, so I ended up hiring an Ameda for two weeks) as well as having to buy a milk collection kit. Our baby came three weeks early hence the last minute panic pump buying! On the plus side, this allowed us to compare the Spectra with the Ameda and my partner reckons the Spectra is just as good (and a fraction of the cost).
Good. But far from perfect.
Firstly, most of my stars are given for the fact that there is a choice for consumer of a hospital grade breast pump which is ACTUALLY affordable.Thank you to Spectra for that. Medela, in my humble opinion, are very greedy in terms of their product markup - in everything from their over-rated bottles to their pumps. Even hiring of their pumps is very expensive, particularly when u need to fork out the pump attachments for an extra $30 each! Spectra s2 suits my needs as a regular breast pumper, and the portability is an ace feature. But despite ...this,the Spectra S1 pumping product is not without it's flaws. The bottles are my least favorite part, they very oddly shaped at the bottom, and subsequently, they frequently knock over by themselves and don't sit so great on a flat surface, more so when attached to the pump and tubing. The flow in the bottle teats is very fast, so not suitable for an infant that is less than a month old. There is only one space on the unit for one bottle, which makes it very awkward to carry around. When tipped backwards, the milk spills out. Many a time, the bottles have overbalanced and splashed milk onto me and all around me. I cannot seem to pump as much from this pump as another well-known brand, but the fact that it is much more affordable makes me overlook this fact. Another aspect is that it starts on pumping mode instead of let-down mode, which makes it a little awkward if you use let-down frequently. In pump mode, there is only 3 cycle speeds to choose from. The instruction booklet is very lousy and doesn't explain a lot, but luckily the folks at spectra are very helpful, so just drop them an email and they will attach another better booklet. I found Spectra customer service to be very prompt and very helpful. All in all, happy with the product, but the design of the bottles are poor, and I wish that they had of manufactured a bottle that balances properly when attached to the pump tubing and outlet. I wish that the teat was less fast flowing too. But over all I am happy with this company because being a mother to a newborn is tough work, and the cash flow is often on the brink, so thank God there is a company of which you can purchase a hospital grade pump without shelling out the earth for it. I do love my pump, despite the few annoyances about the design.
Pretty satisfied with this product - would recommend
I am pretty happy with this product and would recommend it to everyone. It is quiet, easy to operate and clean and has a wide range of vacuum settings to suit so that your nipples don't get sore. The product also has an effective massage setting. There are only two disadvantages: 1/ occasionally the collection bottle unscrews too easily from the flange which can result in spilled milk, and 2/ the most annoying thing is that the flanges with the pump come in a standard 24mm size and other sizes available at an additional cost are 28mm and 32mm. ...The standard 24mm flange size is too big for me and my nipples rub on the edges and can be a bit annoying and sore sometimes and at the moment Spectra don't offer a wider range of sizes. Overall though I am really happy with it and use it on average three times per day.
Great pump - fast and gentle!
After using two other pumps through three pregnancies I was disappointed with their performance so I bought the S1 based on great anecdotal feedback. In terms of performance it has definitely lived up to expectations. Superior to others I have used.
The fittings are inferior than some other bands and feel quite cheap. Would be great if other brand valves could be used with the S1. It is easy to lose some of that precious milk due to the design of the breast shield, duck valve etc. Not easy to clean. Very gentle though and you have more control over the strength of the pump.
A great product
I've used the S1 for 4 months now and it has been great. I have often pumped in the car on long trips to in-laws and it has helped my production as I don't have much. I've just had to get new shields as the valve keeps falling off (after 3 times a day use) and the supplied bottles are pretty useless but that isn't too much of an issue for me. I can highly recommend this product for the quiet operation, varying controls and rechargability.
Questions & Answers
Help my spectra pump has turned on but now none of the buttons will work to switch between modes, increase suction or even turn it off.
Just had the same problem! Did you find any resolution?
I was pumping and all of a sudden the Spectra turns off! I tried to turn it back on and the screen turns in but there’s no suction or pumping sounds from the pump. After a few seconds, it shuts off.
