Simple to operate
Suitable for intense gardening
Stihl is no longer the quality it used to be.
My FS 55 has been a pig from the get-go. It's hard to start, it cuts out, takes forever to warm up, it vibrates and the bump-stop is pathetic. I tried to take it back (under warranty) and they would only do so if I paid for the $88 service fee. I've used it about 5 to 10 times and I'm now moving on to a different brand as I can't be bothered and I may as well put the $88 towards a decent line trimmer.
Purchased in February 2018 at Stihl Dealer for $400.00.
I like Stihl, but this is a dud.
I have a Stihl chainsaw which is indestructible, the whipper snipper on the other hand has been dreadful. Always hard to start, i clean or replace the carbie to no avail and it now needs a new carburetor after about 20 hours of use.
Purchased in February 2017 for $370.00.
Very difficult to start
This product is good if it starts. Very difficult to start even in warm weather. I am not at all satisfied with this product. Think twice before you buy. It is two stroke engine.
Purchased in May 2016 for $350.00.
ok for the first 3 years but no good for long term heavy duty work
Was ok for the early years that i had it but damaged the conrod after 3.5 years not the right machine for a big yard of nearly 2 acres. Dealer service has always been top quality. Have replaced it with an 85 so far so good a lot better for heavy duty work
Disappointed, great for 2 years then useless & unfixable.
Easy to start, Easy to use. Line system works fine. Quite easy & quick to replace line.
Cuts well unless grass tall & wet.
I clean & replace everything on my trimmers every year.
I filter my fuel through a fine mesh filter when filling & empty the fuel out when storing it.
After one and a half years of use only during spring/summer it wouldn't rev out & revved erratically up & down on full throttle.
SEE NOTE BELOW!!!
I had it fully serviced, replacing lines, air filter, fuel filter, spark plug & carburettor.
It runs ok sometimes the rest...
A good reason never to purchase Stihl products again.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is a lemon. We had to take it back to the dealer as soon as we got it home, and they were less than sympathetic. It is impossible for me to start, and I have good upper body strength. My husband can only start it sometimes. And when it does start, it vibrates so much my hands are numb for an hour afterwards. Yes, we bought this product when it was placed on special, but surely it is reasonable to expect a basic level of product competence. If Stilh knew just how bad their product was, and I'm thinking that's why they put it on special, then it's pretty unethical of them to continue selling it to unaware customers. I note it's now discontinued. Wondering if any reviewers have heard back from Stihl?
Don’t buy this what ever you do!!
I have had nothing but problems with this machine, it’s hard to start, line feeder is terrible.
Vibrates like hell (even though I’ve had it serviced by a Stihl dealer) stay clear of this product !! I paid $475 in 2016 thinking I’m buying a premium product, then in 2017 Stihl dropped the price to $370 !!! Why ??? Take a guess ?? I will never buy a Stihl product again....
Don’t waste your money!
Avoid this machine! It is dreadful, truely dreadful. After owning it for 1 day I am taking it back mainly due to:
- being extremely difficult to start and when it does start it may just cut out as soon as you touch the throttle
- cuts out at random intervals and then will not start again
- feeder head chews through cord excessively
Ultimately I bought this as my first stihl producers and the product is unusable which is disappointing. I would never buy a stihl product again due to this experience.
Frustrating Auto Feed
If I had of known about how poor the auto feed works I would not have purchased this unit. After a few hours use I had used all the cord. I could not believe it. My older Ryobi with the bump feed would last for ages. I replaced it with an after market bump feed head ($49) and it works well....so far. I should have bought a different brand that came with the bump feed head. I've had Stihl chainsaws (pre Chinese) and other Stihl products (Family business were agents years ago) and have been more than happy but this unit has underwhelmed me.
Worst one I have ever owned.
Bought the Stihl FS55 machine to replace a cheap one I had bought from Bunnings some years earlier. It was the most expensive whipper-snipper I have ever owned, and the most disappointing. In the short time I have owned it, the unit has had many problems and very hard to start. Took it back to the local dealer while still under warranty and they charged me to "fine tune it". Just after that, the primer bulb spilt and again it was not covered under warranty. The dealer blamed it on "crap fuel" even though I always use Caltex 95 and Stihl two-str...oke oil. It constantly cuts out when tilted and now will not idle. I have replaced the air filter, new spark plug and drained the fuel which made no difference. I am not spending any more money on it and decided to count my losses and go and buy something else. There is nothing worse than spending good money on gardening equipment and ending up with a dud!
Literally purchased the FS55RC-E this morning and after 15min of use I can't wait to take it back !!!!
1. Stalls when you tilt at certain angles to trim.
2. When you do have it at the angle it likes not stall on it stalls in revs when you tart to get into it.
3. Regardless if you're left handed or right, the motor sits right against the back of your forearm and starts to heat up! So you have to hold the stupid thing at a stupid angle whilst not trying to stall it at stupid angle.
4. Another thing the it should spin clockwise to throw objec...
Do not buy STIHL
Bought a new trimmer. A week later it wouldn't run. Long story short I've brought in to 3 different places and had to pay out of pocket not covered under warranty because they don't know what's wrong each time and stihl has a policy not to replace units that don't work, what a joke.
Almost $300 for useless junk. If I can even save one person from making the same mistake I made then I'm glad to help. Buy almost any other brand guaranteed you'll get better customer service. NEVER AGAIN.
Don't Buy This Model
I have owned this trimmer for 3 weeks. I have never written a negative review about a product but my frustration not only with the product but with the lack of response for Customer Service has led e to do so.
On the first day of use ( 1 day after purchasing it) I went to use it and it continued stalling. Took it back to the store. The young man said it needed to be tuned up - why it wasn't done beforehand I do not know. He was very helpful and he tuned it up. Went to use it this morning and it did not start AT ALL. Took it...back to the store. Same person served me. He couldn't start it either. He said it needs to go in for the fault to be assessed. Asked for a replacement and said he didn't have the authority to do so - not his fault. HOWEVER surely there should be something in place that if I have had to take the trimmer back four times in 3 weeks that there is obviously a fault with the product and they should replace it there and then. I had my husqvarna trimmer for 14 YEARS and only twice did it need servicing. I have had this stihl product for 2 days and have taken it back twice. NOT impressed by the product, but even more so, not impressed as to why they couldn't just provide me with a replacement trimmer. I am now without a trimmer - not good enough stihl when you pride yourself on high quality products. Word of mouth is a very influential means of selling your products. My delay in writing this review is that I sent Stihl Customer Service an email two days after purchasing this product requesting that they call me to discuss the issues. I have not had a reply from them. Not only is this product lacking it what it is meant to do, but so is there so called customer service team. DO NOT BUY!
Waste of time and money - rubbish!
Auto feed head useless, just spits out line and cuts it off. Rarely starts. Once it does start, it always conks out. This piece of junk has cost me thousands of dollars in lost revenue and time. Would never ever recommend a STIHL FS55R to anybody.
STIHL customer service does not exist in Australia, they don't wanna know.
Don't waste your money
Bought this model on the recommendation of a local mower store after the motor on my Kaaz brushcutter died after 14 years of faithful trouble-free service. Have had the Stihl for 3 years now, taken it in for regular services, and am still tempted to chuck the thing and write it off as a waste of money. Yeah, it cuts the grass....once you get it started. If you get it started. Easy2start is a gross exaggeration. More than 2 pulls of the cord and it floods. So you waste time waiting for it to finish it's fuel tantrum and try again, and aga...in, and again. Drinks 2-stroke at a massive rate. No Australian customer support phone contact. No instructions in the manual regarding cord winding (had to search Youtube). Next time it causes problems I will leave it in the driveway, back over it, and go buy another Kaaz. Not much Expensive, fuel guzzling, hard to start
What I Expected
First trial today, found the trimmer easy to use, a fraction heavy on fuel but I think the fuel tank may be a smaller capacity to what my previous trimmer was.Coped with heavy going through thick growth. Seems good for first time owner of a Stihl. :) Agents service was a great experience, very helpful and friendly.
Light, easy to use, plenty of grunt for what I am looking for. (Maintain 1 acre - 4,000sq metres.
Nothing yet, just purchased today. You pay for what you get.
Not too bad, not worth the price...probably better with a 4-stroke
Once again STIHL does not have any Australian customer service support line.
This thing drinks the juice but not as much as the hedge trimmer I've noticed (which i also own)
It's relatively easy to start with its new EASY2START system holding it in certain angles, the idle goes funny...
And at low revs it feels like it wants to stall....
(its really embarrassing out in the front yard... and stalls...since its a flashy STIHL expensive hedge trimmer.)
