Waste of Money
This is the most unreliable chainsaw I have ever known. The only good thing I can say is that it starts easily. I have owned it for only 2 years and it has been back to the dealers for repairs 3 time now, and the repair total costs are now just over 50% of the purchase price. My previous chainsaw was a husqvarna of similar size but not only was it cheaper to buy but in 10 years it never required any more than routine services. Regret now I was talked into "trading up"
Does what it should
My first chainsaw, and used it a few times and it runs just fine. Starts easily hot or cold, just love it.
Bought for four wheel driving trips and camping, only $300 including a case.
Originally bought an Aldi special for $200 but didn't like the look of the quality so bit the bullet and went the Stihl.
My Best Chainsaw
I have several chainsaws, including a Husky 455 and a Makita electric (reviewed elsewhere). I bought the Stihl because the weight of the Husky was hurting my back (even though I am a strong guy, 180cm tall and 100kg). I've had this little Stihl saw for over a year now, and used about 50 tankfuls of gas through it. I mostly cut down weed trees on my acreage block, and once they are down, I "buck" them into small pieces to use as mulch in the forested sections of my land. I've been through one or two new chains as well. It just keeps on going; it...'s my most reliable chainsaw. Starts every time on the second pull. I've used it to drop large trees with a diameter twice the length of the chain bar (don't try this it home, it needs a special technique and can be dangerous), just because I did not feel like getting my Husky out of storage. Tips: * I buy aftermarket (cheap) air filters on eBay. Chain replacements are Oregon 90PX chain (can also use Stihl Picco Micro Mini 3 (61 PMM3), Type 3610 w/ a 4.0mm file). Spark plug replacements NGK BPMR7A, Bosch WSR 6 F, Champion RJC6Y GAP=0.50mm/0.020". * Use olive oil to lubricate bar (not canola oil, which will dry on the chain and freeze it solid — google "Drying vs Non-Drying Vegetable Oils" with the quotes). Use STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer to keep the fuel fresh. I paid $299 on a special deal that included an esky (which has been very useful too!) Overall, a great product.

Perfectly good for trees it was designed for.
I've been using this machine for about a month now and can say I'm happy with it's performance. If you read the manual carefully and not jump steps in the operating procedure it will work for you. Starts every time for me when warm or cold. The biggest piece of wood I've cut would be around 25cm in diameter which it went thru no worries. It's not a hard core chainsaw but it perfect enough for the home owner for trimming limbs or cutting firewood. I'm happy with it and would give it an 8 out of 10.
Have had this rubbish Stihl chainsaw for four years and it has always been difficult to start. It has been "serviced" by the dealer twice, and is no easier to start. My previous chainsaw - a Husqvarna - was great and was always very easy to start. I will be tossing this Stihl chainsaw in the garbage.
worst chain saw ive ever owned
one of the most pethatic and useless saws ive ever owned bought it 12 months ago and ive been back to the dealer 7 times due to faults on the machine, this saw is just terrible, ive previously owned husqvarna saws and they have worked wonderful for me not a problem, i only bought a stihl on the advise of a mate saying they were alot better, its heavier, its louder, it struggles even on small logs with a sharp chain, this machine is everything that is wrong in the world!
this saw needs to go back to the drawing board cause ive had that many problems with it its not funny,
i would never buy one of this saws again!
A disgrace to Stihl
I see that some folks are very happy with their ms170's. This was not the case for me. Dealer did a demo start but I got it home and could not start it. I reviewed the instructions, gave it time assuming I had flooded it, and tried again. NOTHING! It had the correct fuel mixture put in by the dealer. I am not new to starting and operating 2 stroke engines, and all my other machines start no problem . Returned it to the dealer who was sure he could get me to where I could start it, told me I probably didn't hear the "pop" in choke and th...en flooded it, which I am sure is correct, but I insisted on my money back. I tried several times, it never audibly popped. Tried starting it after a couple of pulls on choke and moving it to start position, nothing. If I have to click my heels and rub my head to start it, I don't want it, would rather pay more and get something I know will always start using the normal 2 stroke motor starting sequence that has always worked for every other 2 stroke I've worked. Stihl will lose customers selling this kind of junk, I'm no longer a loyal Stihl customer.
A great machine - does exactly what a home handyman needs without costing too much. As long as the chain is sharp and the chain rakers are filed appropriately, its hard to imagine you would need anything more. It has cut a 35cm thick gum tree that fell down - no problems at all (noting I sharpened the chain/filed rakers to get a good bite). Drain fuel after use - fill up when you want to use with fresh mix and it starts second pull everytime (first pull fires with choke, then take choke off and second pull starts the motor - normal for a Stihl (and most chainsaws)). I have cut more than 40 trees now over autumn last year and this week and its still going great.
Stihl MS 170 Miniboss.
I have only ever had small chainsaws for pruning & firewood cutting, my last one was a Stihl 009 which I bought second hand & gave sterling service till it died. So I bought another Stihl, brand new this time & it has many design improvements over the 009. It's quick & easy to clean/service/adjust the chain tension, & has always be easy to start & has never let me down, been through 2 chains now & it has saved me 1000's of $ from NOT hiring professional pruners.
Light weight, easy relible starting, has all the power I need, good quality.
You must pay for quality
Had this saw for about 5 years now has done countless hours trimming up trees, shrubs and even had to cut firewood at times when my bigger saws have been out of service. Its on its seventh chain now, could probably do with a new bar but that pretty good going for a small saw. It does leak bar oil when not in use now but i don't mind my shed has a wooden floor so it keeps the wood in good nick.
Light weight, handy saw for light work, cheap to run.
Great little chainsaw
Ive used many chainsaws but have only ever owned the cheap $100 special jobs from the likes of Mitre 10 or Bunnings. After a cheap one I had failed to start I decided to invest in a Stihl. I only use it to cut up firewood when camping and pruning small trees around the house so the MiniBoss is great. Starts very easy, plenty of power, well balanced design which makes it easy to use and it also appears to be decent qaulity. Only owned it since March so I guess I will wait and see what the future holds but so far its excellent. Best chainsaw I have used.
Good quality, easy to start, powerful.
Stihl MS170 [censored word removed]
I have owned many stihl saws from, ms 170 to 090, i current have a ms170, 07, 08s,ms660, 090av.
The ms170 is the biggest bit of [censored word removed] i have put fuel into, it wont run properly, wont rev, hard to start, leaks bar oil out of the tank when stored, just a bit of junk.
I know of four other ms170 and they are all the same "junk"
I have been back to stihl for repairs, no luck yet, they cant even fix it. Its now a shed filler.
Dont buy a ms170 bit of [censored word removed] junk.
Size is small enough to take camping.
Leaks all the oil out while being stored, hard to start, wont rev, junk.
Only bought it a few months ago. The thing never starts. I use the same fuel in my other equipment and they work perfectly. I've returned it 4 times. I only use it in a domestic situation so it's not like it's getting overworked. I'm looking to buy another brand now as I've given up on Stihl
Almost impossible to start
this saw is excellent sthil tool
i own 2 sthil chain saws my first one is a 038av,great for doing all the large trees, and very heavy to use for long time. my ms170 is great for around the home for triming tree branches and cutting up small logs, up to 20cm .( old school measurement 8 inches) all sthil blowers, brush cutters and chain saws are the best.
easy to start and light to handle not like big chains
Stihl MS 170
This saw in just brilliant.
If you buy it new, make sure you run the saw in properly, use the right fuel mix, keep the teeth sharp and you wont have any problems. Don't run it at high revs during the first tank or if the saw is cold as you will damage the engine.
This saw is cutting through softwood and hardwood like butter. I'm using this saw to fall small trees and cut up firewood, up to 10-14" in diameter. This saw is doing the job great with little effort.
If you want to cut down large hardwood trees then get another saw. This saw is perfect for small trees and bits of firewood and does the job flawlessly. Highly recommenced.
Reliable. Lightweight. Parts are cheap and easy to obtain
Usual Stihl quality - excellent!
This is the first chainsaw I've bought and only the second one I've used, but I've used other Stihl tools so I knew which brand I wanted. This model has now been replaced, I think, so I got it when it was reduced in price. I've had it for a few months now.
The instructions are good and easy to follow. Starting has always been easy. It's a small light saw so maybe not suitable for cutting firewood for days on end, but perfect for me. I use it to cut out blanks for turning wood and also for a bit of firewood. I got a small chainsaw, partly bec...ause it's all I need and partly because I don't have any experience and wanted something easy to control. The warranty is two years - as long as you get it serviced once in that time and as long as you buy two bottles of Stihl 2 stroke oil. Service from the Stihl dealer was also very good. Good starting. Light but powerful enough.
This chainsaw is good for around the house for those small little jobs for and at a cheap price. I would prefer this chainsaw than bigger ones for those small jobs.
It is a good little chainsaw that is easy to use and doesn't cost much. It is easy to maintain and look after. It's great for jobs like trimming trees.
It's very small and can get stuck easy in those bigger logs.
I had been looking at a smaller machine for general purpose yard work and camping and decided to go with the smallest one particularly because of its price. I got my ms 170 for $350, a bargain. It turns out the saw is outstanding, cutting through green timber up to 12 inches thick with ease, though dry timber bluntens the smaller chain faster than it would on the heavier duty models this can be counteracted by updating the chain and bar size once the initial bar is worn. Its a great little saw and I use it for camping and heavy duty yard work/p...runing. Dont buy it with a view to cutting a load of dry timber because its not what its designed for. But by the same token dont let the fact its only a small saw fool you, this thing is great fun and makes light work of a day in the yard or a week long camping trip. Easy to start, highly portable. it comes with a lower profile chain and bar as new (this can be updated to the heavy duty chain and bar once you have worn the initial bar out)
Good for domestic use although in hindsight I would have gone for a farm boss as it doesn't like the thicker domestic stuff. This is my first chainsaw and it has been a good learning experience. If I had a wood burner and needed it to cut up some dead logs I would not use this saw. It really is purely for home use.
It is a reliable machine that is easy to start from cold.
Doesn't like going through 15cm diameter trees too much but it gets there.
A great chainsaw which i have cut through massive trees and chopped 2 seasons worth of firewood so far.
I just wish Stihl would review the On/Off switch which can get rather annoying
Easy to start, strong and powerful machine!
The On/Off switch seems to come loose often which is easily fixed but on a $400 chainsaw...

Hi bought still 171 mini boss off the wrack at dealer starting problem emeditaly
back on wrack
second one better until out it field dreadfulstart also
seems like fuel not helping when starting up cough and cough later pull trigger to run chain dies completely warranty expired by one month
now have 170 runs ok but quote to deal with other $80 per hour
One does not chuck these units over shoulder every 5 minutes
Bill, U-tube have some good videos on the best starting procedure. I suggest you take a look. They don't like stale fuel so it's best to drain the tank when not using it. My 170 seized up so I changed brand and paid a bit more for an Echo chainsaw. It's beautifully engineered, starts first pull and runs very smoothly (made in Japan too). I'm not longer a fan of Stihl although I do own a Stihl petrol blower which has been a great machine. It's old and not made in China.
I bought the Stihl Mini boss because of the great reviews, however, one review said "it's a bugger to start but when it is going it is a great little machine".
This is true, it can be very difficult to get it going especially if it hasn't been used for a few months. Also, you must have the correct fuel mix which I purchased at the store where I bought it. This gave me an extra 2 years warranty (4 in total).
I also drain the fluid back into the container when it's not in use. Sometimes I also have to leave the machine until the next day as continually pulling the starter floods the engine.
Does the MS170 , MS 171, MS 180 and MS181 all have automatic chain oilers?
The MiniBoss series by STIHL presents an entry-level petrol-powered chainsaw, ideal for cutting firewood and felling small trees. It’s easy to start with a combi-lever and contains an automatic STIHL Ematic chain lubrication system.
STIHL anti-vibration system: This anti-vibration system dampens the oscillations from the engine which significantly reduces vibrations at the handles, too, ensuring smooth operation of the chainsaw.
Compensator: This controller in the carburetor prevents the fuel-air mixture from getting richer as the air filter becomes clogged which keeps the fuel/air ratio in the combustion mixture constant. This also makes the engine power constant. The filter doesn't need to be cleaned until a significant drop in power occurs.
Single-lever master control: All the important functions such as start, choke, throttle and stop can be operated via a single lever.
STIHL Ematic-System: The Ematic chain lubrication system ensures pinpoint lubrication of the saw chain links and guide bar rails. When used with STIHL OILOMATIC saw chain, it will provide maximum lubrication, longer wear and less oil consumption than conventional methods of chain lubrication. The Ematic system can reduce bar oil consumption by up to 50%.
STIHL ElastoStart: STIHL ElastoStart reduces the shock caused by the compression of the engine during starting. The compression shock is taken away from the user’s joints and muscles through a spring or rubber element in the starter handle.
Pre-separation air filtration system: The innovative long-life air filter system greatly extends the service life of the filter. Air routing removes larger particles of dirt, meaning the actual filter has less to do, and the saw can be used for longer without having to clean the filter.
Advanced combustion technology: Four overflow channels swirl the fuel-air mix before ignition, allowing for optimum combustion and highly efficient performance. The result is lower consumption and high torque across a broad rpm range.
QuickStop Chain Brake: The QuickStop chain brake is a protective mechanism when handling chainsaws. The chain brake is operated via the front hand guard and brings the saw chain to a standstill in fractions of a second. If the kickback is strong enough, the Quick Stop Chain Brake automatically releases.
