Sunbeam EM0440 Grinder Does Not Grind to Fine
Bought this grinder from Amazon. First time grind produced coarse coffee even though setting is fine grind. Sunbeam Customer Care sent two (2) washers but the grind is still not so fine. Another set of double washers was requested which I fitted under the burr. The grinder is now working fine with the added washers.
Purchased in at Amazon for $69.

It does the job. I'm sure there are better grinders that are more consistent. But it is cheap and effective enough for the purpose. It is however poorly designed. Quite an amount of grind stays behind inside and builds up on itself unless the machine is shaken or bashed, or a brush is inserted to get at the grounds. Maybe a little too compact? Particularly messy when coming out. Static maybe?

Hi Andrew Westcott,
Grinders do tend to be a bit messy when grinding, always looking at ways to improve our products so thank you, we will take on board...

Good grinder but poor hopper and messy
I got the 0480 conical burr grinder a few years ago after trying a couple of cheaper Sunbeam grinders.
The cheaper machines would not grind fine enough on the finest setting and were basically useless.
This machine is relatively low cost but feels very robust (solid) and has a great range of 30 odd settings.
It grinds nice and slow and the big burrs dissipate the heat so doesn't burn the coffee.
I used to grind at 13 for the Sunbeam Cafe machine but now use number 4 for the Rancillio Silvia which needs a fine grind.
The hopper is ...
I wholeheartedly agree with your review!

Just okay...
I got this cheap ($90 delivered to a rural area in 2009) I wanted the conical burr and didn't want to splash out for something more expensive when I wasn't considering upgrading my Sunbeam EM6910.
For the Sunbeam or other home machines in the lower price bracket, this grinder does a fine job. It seems reliable after more than two years of service and seems consistent in grind also.
My main complaint is the design! It is SOOOOOO messy, if you are not super gentle and careful when grinding you will knock the holder off and spill your coffee...
Read more everywhere, the tray won't catch the coffee because it is not attached and so is never where you want it to be (i.e. it doesn't stay tucked into the base of the grinder) Taking off the hopper is very hazardous as the lid does not stay on, rather, it just sits on top - as noted previously the beans also fall out of the bottom which does not close properly. Cleaning is a nightmare - the amount of ground coffee left in the machine is unacceptable - you don't want this in you cup the next day so it needs to be cleaned out.Hi Vegemum,
Thank you for your feedback, it seems though that a new hopper is required. If the bottom of the hopper is closed, there should not a mess underneath. Also the rubber attachment might need to be replaced as well. ...

Regards, Sunbeam Customer Service 1300 881 861 customercare@sunbeam.com.auThanks but I wouldn't bother. I don't use the rubber attachment and have long ago shelved the tray to the back of the cupboard, I just wipe up the mess. I no longer pack it away everyday so the beans ...
Read morefalling out the top and bottom is not an issue for me. The main thing I would like to see improved is the amount of ground coffee that is left 'in transit' so to speak, I usually grind and when I almost have enough I bang the top of my grinder a few times to try and empty out the remaining ground coffee (this does probably increase the mess I make, but I hate the idea of stale coffee in the next days cup)Find out how Sunbeam GrindFresh EM0440 compares to other Coffee Grinders / Roasters

Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions about Sunbeam GrindFresh EM0440
Why is my grinder making a loud noise?
Check for any blockages.
My coffee gets caught in the chute and sprays everywhere, what should I do?
Clean the residue from the chute. Try grinding into a container closer to the spout, then pour into the group handle. This will catch the grinds which are statically charged and going in all directions.
Why is there no difference to my grind despite adjusting the settings?
Check the grinder burr is seated properly.
My burrs are not aligned, how do I fix it?
Make sure everything is clean, with no obstructions.
How do I achieve consistency in my grind?
- Use beans from the same brand, blend and volume. Ensure beans are fresh before use.
- Make sure all parts are clean before each use.
- Experiment with the amount of time in which you grind the coffee beans.
- Over time as blades start to wear, slowly adjust your grinding time.

Hi
I got this about a year ago and I went to use it this morning and it won't turn on. I've cleaned the grinders and it's got nothing. I have had no power outages or blow outs and the grinder has been used on average 3 times a week, once a time for the past 12 months. Very disappointing.
